So a glass rod (from TBR) is rubbed with silk and brought close(but not touching) two neutral metal spheres.

Why is it important that the glass rod not touch the sphere? Passage III "Electrostatics"
a. to maintain the amount of charge transferred to sphere.
b. to maximize the rate of charge transfer to sphere
c. to prevent induction of charge separation onto the sphere.
d. to prevent charge transfer directly to sphere.

So I am confused as to why the answer is D because isn't the whole point of this experiment to transfer charge from rod to sphere?

Can someone explain please :D
