I am an international-trained dentist. My stats are 85/76/3.58 (board part1/2/GPA), 3 years clinical experience in my home country, rank 12 out of 60. I am currently in an oral biology Phd program in US and will graduate this year. I know my part 2 score is really poor (I don't have enough time to study due to my graduating issue). Does anybody know my chances to be accepted in a perio program without retaking boards? Thanks!

What do you think of my chances?
GPA 3.52 - top 25% of my class, NBDE part 1 - 84. I was a research assistant in the dept. I attended resident seminars, will be doing 2 externships in perio over the summer, and attend a monthly perio study club at the local state dental association

????

My GPA is 3.75, Part-1 85 and Toefl is 99 Rank is in Top 10%. 3 year experience in General Dentistry in my home country. A 5 month observership in a private Practice last year. And now-a-days doing internship in Perio department in a dental school. have good U.S. recommendation Letter. I have no research experience :( . Have applied to OSU, Alabama, Minnesota, Illinois, Michigan, Louisville, UK, St. LOuis, Connecticut, Case Westren & Columbia.
May also apply to tufts & UMDNJ
wat will be my chances

hmmmmmmm.......... I want to go either to OSU or Louisville. As OSU has a completly state funded program and u will get tution waiver plus a little stipend but on the other hand program clinical curriculum is just 48%. Louisville has no stipend and tution waiver but program is really great coz clinical curriculum is 70%. Let's see wat will happen.
Both of these programs accepts FTD's and faculty is great.

hi tinna.could you plz explain how we can take an internship in a dental school?
thank you

Out of school 12 years, in private practice and thinking about going back for perio. part I 87 top 1/2 of class. Research abstract in the IADR. Any possibility for old guys in Perio programs?

old farts are welcome to residency programs. IMHO old farts can bring loads of great experience in Interdiscliplinary Dentistry which is essential to great specialty practice. Your referring GP will appreciate it.

But old farts who don't like to learn new things or are stubborn in their ways will not be welcomed.:D

Klingon thanks for the reply, how do my numbers look for perio. This old guy likes to learn new things.

Wetzel,
your numbers seem decent not great but you probably have a good shot at getting into a program as long as you're ok with relocating anywhere and willing to apply to as many programs as possible (30+). But you need to pad it with extra stuff as in your experiences in private practice, extracurricular stuff like leadership in prof associations etc. good luck

IMHO General Dentists who go back to Residency programs after years of general practice tend to be better Specialists because they know what their referring GPs want and desire.:)
