Med student publishing a case report here. I'll have first authorship because I did the literature review and wrote it, but I'm unsure if the surgeon/my mentor should be 2nd or 3rd (there is also a pathologist who helped me retrieve a handful of slides regarding the case).
I know conventional wisdom states that the last position is reserved for the PI/mentor, but with just 3 total authors and this being a case report, it feels more appropriate to list my mentor 2nd. Thoughts?
