I am 3 years out from a different specialty (with intership in IM). How difficult would it be for me to switch to psychiatry? Also, how difficult would it be to get a position in Southern California?

It is not difficult to go into psychiatry with an IM internship as your IM internship will count as one of your 4 years of psych. Finding a position is mainly dependent on whether the program has an open slot or not. Getting a slot in southern CA might be difficult given the demand. Check out the program at San Diego since they take a fair number of people at the PGY2 level.

However, you may encounter trouble finding a residency that can pay you. If you've used up 3 years, then you may be in a bind.
