Can you match Plastics fellowship after a 5 year community or privademic residency without 2 research years?

I know that for fellowships like Surg Onc or Peds, 2 research years are basically required, but is this also true for plastics fellowship given I'm sure its very competitive. Perhaps not if its not as "academic" as the other two?

Seeing as people have done it from DO programs without taking research years I'm going to say yes it's possible.

I know people who have done this. I assume, but have no proof, that it is only going to get harder as more independent fellowships close in favor of integrated programs.

I know 3 people from my residency that matched independent plastics.

But yes, I do believe it is getting harder with more programs closing as an above poster mentioned.

Without taking dedicated research years, yes, but not without doing some research. Doesn’t have to be bench research. But also yes getting more difficult as others have mentioned.

Was basically going to say this. Good buddy of mine a year behind me matched Plastics. Dude had his **** together. Did research and presented at various conferences. Got some pubs. Great resident. No doubt he'll do well in fellowship and beyond.
