:welcome: San Diego reporting in, grab a complimentary tray and snuggle up close to one another. Its time to eat and discuss our applications, as well as ways to keep us cali kids on top of the game.

Where are you all on your path to becoming physicians, and how do we overcome the sea of ever budding premeds?

Former San Diegan/current San Jose-ian(?) here. I am getting stuck on interviews but at least this cycle I'm doing better and getting more interviews in general. Looking forward to all the interview small talk about Super Bowl 50 that I'll have no idea how to answer because I don't follow sports.

Very nice. It must be pretty pricey flying out to all the non-cali interviews though. I burned through cash even with cheaper transport options like supershuttle. Heard anything back from cali schools yet?

I wouldn't worry about the football small talk. If you are really worried, just look up a few highlights from the game afterwards and bring them up in conversation. No sweat.

Not related, but judging from your avatar...you /a/?

I will never put my TapEx avacado boba down. NEVER.

Biggest thing IMO is to do something that you like to do that makes you "unique" while making sure to have everything else. I was interested in a specific type of basic science research focused on a disease. I wanted to get a real world experience of how that disease was affecting people and so volunteered with the non profit group raising awareness to the disease.

If you stick to your story and really go hard in it your ability to write primaries and secondaries becomes a hell of a lot easier.

Is In-N-Out really that good? I've been to Cali a couple times but I was always distracted with other things to give it a chance.

My wallet is on FIRE. Im waitlisted right now for Irvine and SD which is tons of fun. And yeah you've guessed right, been around /a/ since high school, yotsuba a best daughteru. Luffy is in his new mode in the anime if you wanted to see it in action by the way.

Also, if you're looking to save some cash OOS then try using lyft for transportation and airbnb for housing. Lyft is the same thing as uber except they have a lot of promotional deals because they're runner up to uber and airbnb is very affordable and safe.

@Meeehai It's my favorite place for burgers and always a solid choice but not anything truly special. I like mine without any sauce (you can get it on the side) because it really brings out the freshness of the ingredients.

It's good, but it isn't life changingly good. The food tastes really fresh and its pretty cheap. But the way people talk about it is like it's the best place on the planet. It's not.

I'd rather go to Chipotle, but their milk shakes are really good.

Applied to 10 DO schools only and was lucky enough to get an II and acceptance to the most local one early in the cycle. Made me think I should've tossed a few hundred to MD reach schools just to try. But since I'm very oriented to pathology and wouldn't mind primary care because them surgical specialties would make it harder for me to be a fantastic father, it's all good. Now I'm just going to chill and wait for the **** storm in August.

You can't stop me from sucking on those sweet, soft balls ... in my Thai iced tea.

Former San Jose-ian, current Socal-er checking in! That food looks soOoOo good, but unfortunately is enough calories for my entire daily intake :(. Especially those animal style fries mMm.

Before this cycle, all I wanted was a CA MD acceptance. Then I realized how tough it is here...and even out there, and started just hoping for an MD anywhere. I actually was pretty excited about leaving CA, until I was finally accepted to LLU :). Lifestyle policy doesn't bother me, since I've never developed a taste for alcohol and was too much of a wimp to try any recreational drugs (or a social loser. I really was a social loser in college...) I'm also waitlisted at Irvine, but seeing how the waitlist hasn't moved much in recent years, I have all but given up on coming off the waitlist. If I do, it'd be an awesome, pleasant surprise, but it'll only hurt to hope and expect it.

It's not that it's "that good"...it's just that it's so fresh tasting. It tastes the way real food is supposed to taste. No chemical and preservatives. Everything is made to order. Everything is made fresh there...the potatoes are sliced fresh right before they are dropped in the oil. The menu is quite simple, basically only 3 items...burgers, fries, drinks. There is the not so secret "secret menu"...but even that is still just the same few basic ingredients just used a bit differently.

From what I understand they are going to finally add bacon as an option. Personally...as much as I LOVE bacon...I'm not so sure I'd want bacon on my In and Out burger, it just wouldn't taste right to me.

One downside of In and Out is you have to eat the fries fast! Because they are made so fresh, they don't hold very well. Once they cool off they lose some of their appeal.

Dawg, you gotta try Tiger Milk Tea with boba (Thai tea + milk tea)... Quickly's makes a pretty good one, even tho their food is p terrible.

California schools especially want to see an interest and commitment to service, particularly to disadvantaged populations.
I've tried to show that in my app and have done fairly well w/ California MD schools

Is it just me or do the fries sometimes taste a bit like fish.....?

I've never had that experience, you have weird taste buds. But I really do wolf them down fast! I have my fries down within 5 minutes....I just don't enjoy them when they cool off. The burger I eat at a more leisurely pace.

I have no problems eating the fries fast when they are smothered in sauce, cheese, and sweet onions. Animal style fries are the best!

If I really wanted to make my tummy hurt, I'd get a cheeseburger + animal style fries + milkshake. MMMM

I'm too old to eat like that without feeling the consequences...

So it's like Smashburger.

No, not really. With Smash Burger you have way too many choices...size of patties, assorted cheeses and buns, assorted sides. Smash Burger is okay, but not my favorite...they're very messy to eat and I also think Smash Burger is way too salty for my taste.

In and Out is very simple in their concept and menu and is relatively cheap. Regular burger fries and a drink is about $5. I'd say In and Out would probably be best compared to Five Guys...but with no dogs, no assorted size burgers, and no peanuts! ;)

Uh... I got into Western (most local school to me) with substantially less than the average amount of interest and commitment to service, particularly to disadvantaged populations. Just to kinda go against your example >.> lol

Close except it's cheaper and has a more traditional taste.

Got 1 Cali interview (waitlisted) and 4 east coast interviews (haven't heard back from any of them). I've pretty much given up on the idea that I'll make it back to California in the near future. I guess I have to be fair and give other states a chance at having a piece of this guy

Yes, but how does in n out fare against white castle burgers?

5guys would be a close contender to in n out though, even if it is greasy as hell.

How dare you tell me what to do with my oolong milk tea 25% sugar with boba and rainbow jelly?!?!?

But former NorCal east bay dweller checking in! Now in Boston and I'm not entirely sure if I could count as a CA resident but still gonna apply to most CA schools anyway.

Getting ready to apply for the 2016-2017 cycle!

And just to contribute to the burger talk. In-n-out is the best bang for your buck burger. HOWEVER, I'm sorry to say that shake shack burgers beat it In-N-Out in terms of quality and taste by A LOT.

Phils is good but def doesnt compare to KC BBQ.p which I though i would never say. But the fries at Phils are too damn good.

Slaters...i always put way too much on my burger and it ends up being a mess. Their draft selection is on point though.

In-N-Out is EASILY the best bang for your buck when it comes to fast food American. I'd pick Shake Shack/5-guys over in-n-out any day if they were all the same price.

But considering their prices and quality, I'd go In-N-Out ANY DAYYYYYY.
Just not... today...... east coast livin' is tough :(

Likely will be attending Stanford unless UCLA get off their butt and send me an acceptance. As an LA guy, I just can't imagine a life without the best Korean BBQ and the freshest sushi. NorCal food scenes suck so bad compared to SoCal. I'll likely be loosing some serious weight if I have to move to Palo Alto...

after not having white castle for over twenty years and being an avid harold and kumar fan I have to say that it was the biggest let down of my life.

Your wallet might lose some weight too in Palo Alto.

To be fair, Harold and Kumar hyped up White Castle so much that it would be impossible to fulfill those expectations.

As someone who grew up in the Bay and ended up living in Socal, my condolences to you. But I'd also argue that there are cuisines that Socal does better, and cuisines Norcal does better. In terms of kbbq and sushi, Socal can't really be beat (also for its price!), but I would say Norcal has overall better Indian food, and Dim Sum (if you're into that stuff). Socal dim sum is a joke. Also, there's a super bomb vietnamese sandwich place in Milpitas too which is better than anything I've had in socal (alhambra-ish area). And of course, if you're mean to your wallet, there's also lots of places in SF that are good.. (totally wouldn't recommend thinning your wallet out for it though!)

Oh and just so the thread doesn't get kicked into the social threads,

Los Angeles native here checking in with 1 acceptance at CWRU, 2 waitlists (UCSD, NYU), and pending decisions from Columbia/WashU.

It's tough being a California pre-med, but damn the weather sure is nice isn't it?

Just did a Google search. There are "some" Korean Restaurants in Cleveland. Quite sure they won't be anything close to can get in Koreatown, but at least Cleveland isn't completely void of Korean food.

There's also a few Korean markets, and I can make a bunch of it at home luckily.

I had a roommate who put a jar of kimchi in our fridge. After eating frootloops with kimchi tasting milk the next morning I made him take it out. Love Korean food tho. Can't get it better in the US than in CA

My ex girlfriend's family had a completely separate fridge for kimchi, pretty sure it's a common thing in Korean culture actually.

i've seen that before. it's supposed to imitate the conditions of fermenting the cabbage underground. i walked into my friend's house and was like "what the hell is that big box in your living room"

Are we talking about food instead of apps? God I love this thread

EDIT: but I'm surprised no one has brought up THE MEXICAN FOOD hello
