What are some of your favorite mnemonics not in First Aid? It can be one that is common and not in FA, or one that you made up. I'll start:

Courtesy of DIT:
Treatment for testicular cancer: Eradicate Ball Cancer
Etoposide
Bleomycin
Cisplatin

One I made up because I couldn't keep the thyroid cancers straight:

take
1 PRETty BRA Off Annie's BODY
FASt so
2 MEN can C her Mounds.

The 1 stands for MC which is Papillary - which is what the P in pretty stands for. The capital RET in pretty is because papillary tumors are assoc with the ret protooncogene. Bra is for BRAF - because papillary has also been assoc with the BRAF gene. The capital O and the Annie for Orphan Annie nuclei, the body is for Psammoma bodies. F in fast is for follicular, it's on the second line, because it's the 2nd MC. The capital AS - rhyme with ras - which it what mutation it's assoc with. The M in mounds is for medullary, which is 3rd MC, which is why it is on the 3rd line. It's associated with MEN2A and MEN2B which is what the 2 MEN is about. They are associated with the ret protooncogene as well, but you already knew that. The C is because it is from the parafollicular C cells. Therefore it produces calcitonin.

What are some of yall's favorites?

I created my own developmental milestones chart. It's kind of a hybrid between the ones in Kaplan, First Aid for the USMLE step 1, First aid for the basic sciences, and a few other resources. The bottom row of the table (the "others" row) has mnemonics for each age. The mnemonics cover a great deal of what's in the table, however there is still a lot of information that is not covered by the mnemonics, so you're still going to have to put in a lot of effort if you want to master this.

I hope this makes life a bit easier for you metalrex. :)

damn!!! that's gold! many thanks for sharing!

Anyone have a mnemonic on the pharyngeal arches (nrv, art, ms, skel deriv's)??
No matter how many times I go over this, it just won't stick.

I made a few that are sort of fun.

Atypical Anti-psychotics: CROZAQ

Clozapine, Risperidone, Olanzapine, Zipresidone, Aripiprazole, Quetapine.

Viruses:

everyone has the HHAPPP/PAP one already probably

but I sort of like:

Naked RNA Viruses CP+R

CFTR +SSRE
Calici, Flavi, Toga, Retro

FARBOP -SSRE
Filo, Arena, Rhabdo, Bunya, Orthomyxo, Paramyxo

FA has BOAR for segmented viruses which is useful as well.

Anti-Arrhythmics:

Ia: PDQ: Procainamide, Diisopyramide, Quinidine
Ib: MeLT: Mexiletine, Lidocaine, Tocainaide
Ic: PrEF: Propafenone, Flecanide, Encainide
III: DIBS: Dofetilide, Ibutilide, Bretylium, Sotalol

I'm not sure if there's a mnemonic for it, but how about a way to figure out what genetic lab test is good for which diseases?

I'm aware of SNoW DRoP, but I feel like every time I come across one of those questions, I think to myself "gee, it seems like PCR, Southern and Northern Blot would all be kind of appropriate here" and I end up guessing a 1/3 chance.

Collagen Synthesis in order from nucleus to EC space:

HE Came To GO CROSS Dressing

H - hydroxylation
E - endoplasmic reticulum
C - vit C def = problem (scurvy)

T - Triple helix (procollagen)
G - Glycosylation
O - Osteogenesis imperfecta = problem

CROSS - cross cell membrane, then cross-linked

D - ehlers-Danlos = problem

Thanks a lot imgusmlestep1!!!! now, im waiting for embryonic derivatives:)
I have a mnemonic for mesodermal derivatives:

MESODERM

Muscle (skeletal, cardiac, smooth), Mesothelium (serosal linings)
Endotehlium of blood vessels
Spleen
Osseous tissue, Ovaries, Outer layer of suprarenal gland (adrenal cortex)
Dura, Ducts of genital system
Endothelium of lymphatic vessels
Renal
Microglia, Male gonads

Endoderm is fairly straight forward.
Sorry I don't have anything for Ectoderm. I'm going to create anki flash cards for these though. ;)

I think Nural Crest is probably the highest yield in terms of embryological derivatives

I made this up

Cranial Nerves, chromaffin cells, c cells of thyroid, Color(melanocytes)
R
Enteric plexus (myenteric/meissners)
Skull (bones of skull), Spiral Septum (aorticopulm septum), Schwann Cells
Teeth (odontoblasts)

Then just remember those tricky organs that have mroe than one derivitive
-adenohypophysis/neurophypophysis = surface ectoderm/neuroectoderm
-Thyroid: follicular cells form endoderm, c cells from neural crest
-all bones from mesoderm except skull
-adrenal cortex/medulla = Mesoderm/neural crest (c=m, m=c)

Anyone got any good disease specific drug mnemonics?

eg cancer, aids, diabetes, diuretics?

thanks

Anyone have a good way to remember the H1 blockers? I can never remember the 1st gen vs 2nd gen ones

Most of the second generation H1 blockers end in -adine. The 2 important ones to know are fexofenadine and loratadine.

Certainly fair game, I'd imagine. I had a UW question today that straight up said "identify the lunate bone on this xray."

You can pretty much bet that unless they just ask a straight up identification question like that, it would be something like "hand x-ray + FOOSH = scaphoid/distal blood supply".

Haha..just had that today. I thought the lateral most one would have been the scaphoid, so I started counting from the wrong one. Didn't realize that's actually the trapezoid. Thumb swings on the trapezium is a nice mnemonic.

Sulfa Drugs - Similar to the commercials, Vulgar too, I know! I try to incorporate as much info as possible so its long.

TBS Thats Fuckin Comical + Sulf- (prefix of drugs should be easy to recognize)

Thiazides
proBenicid
SuMAtriptan
-Migraines
-MAO A met.

TMP-SMX
Furosemide
Celecoxib

SULFAAA (adaption of someone elses)
Steven-Johnson Syndrome
UTI/Urinary Precipitation (useful in UTI's)
Large spectrum (gram positive and negative)
Folic Acid Inhibitors (nucleic acids as well) --> Megaloblastic Anemia
- Tx - Leucovorin (Folinic acid analogue-- not 100% on this but it works for MTX-induced BMS so I just assumed it would here as well-- please correct me if I'm wrong!)
Anemia (Hemolytic/megaloblastic anemia)
Agranulocytosis
Analog of PABA

Hope this helps Gluck!

Wow awesome thread! Thank you everyone for sharing!! Please keep them coming and I'll definitely be contributing whenever I come up with something (hopefully) good throughout my studies! These are the kinds of things that can cut out hours of agony haha

For girls...Bright girls are popular. Breasts, growth (spurt)tadrenarche, period.
For boys. Testing parents gets some angry. Testes, penile enlargement, growth spurt, adrenarche.

Cephalosporins causing a disulfuram-like reaction (as per baby katzung 9th 3d. pg. 383). FA only lists one drug.

CefaMANdole, CefoPERAzone, CefoTETan

This help's me remember what's wrong in Achalasia...

"You know doc, MY food just wont go down!"

MY
enteric Plexus

Saw this on some blog a while back:

Iron is absorbed in duodenum, Folic acid in jejunum, and B12 and Bile salts in ileum. Now comes the time to use my childhood crush, whom I can never forget- sweet sexy Britney.
"I" "F"****** "B"ritney - (Please do not be offended by this one)
Duodenum then Jejunum and then Ileum.

A mnemonic to help remember the conversion of cholesterol to estradiol by the Theca and Granulosa cells in the ovaries:

LH stimulates the Theca cell: cholesterol is converted by desmolase to androstenedione

FSH stimulates the Granulosa cell: androstenedione is converted by aromatase to estradiol

I'l(L H)ave (The) (Ch)eescake (Des)sert (And) (SH)e'll (G)et (A)n (A)ppetizing (E)clair

LH - Luteinizing Hormone
The - Theca cell
Ch - Cholesterol
Des - Desmolase
And - Androstenedione
SH - (Follicle) Stimulating Hormone
G - Granulosa cell
A - Androstenedione
A - Aromatase
E - Estradiol
