Hello,

I am currently on an international away and one of my colleagues asked me a question that you guys might be able to better answer.

The doc's mother apparently has lung adenocarcinoma and she is wondering which medical center in the united states would be the 'best' to get it re-evaluated.

I know there are many, many competent onc programs around the nation but I think the doc is looking for some insight into where best to go. Any specialists for lung cancer/adenocarcinomas that you guys know?

I'm sorry if this falls under the "no-medical-advice" rule. If so, of course, feel free to close. Just thought this would be a good place to start.

Thanks!

The biggest issue here is unless you are able to get unofficial advice from someone you know at a hospital, it depends on what kind of insurance the family has and who will reimburse you. The recent TIME article discusses this at length. You can look at the US News Top Ranking Hospitals...most of these hospitals have experts in the management of most cancers, including lung adenocarcinoma. But for a formal eval, you will likely either have to pay a LOT of money out of pocket (and by that, I mean a LOT - refer to the TIME article), or find a hospital that your insurance will cover.

Maybe for some rare cancer subtype or experimental treatment trial that would matter, but for a common cancer like lung adeno, any reasonably high volume cancer center will give you the same workup and treatment protocol. Go where the insurance will cover.

I see Mayo is ranked pretty well in oncology; would you guys agree with USnews rankings for onc in terms of mayo?
