I was just talking to someone the other night whose father had been a doctor on cruise ships (near the end of his life.) He did runs in the Mediterranean, from Rome to Rio, etc. Has anyone else hear of niche practices in super-creative, off-the-beaten-path areas? Like traveling with National Geographic expeditions, etc - or anything way out of the ordinary.

if you want to travel, work with the military or the US foreign service. Both need physicians.

Cruise medicine is actually a fellowship in emergency medicine.

But they accept FP and IM board-certified too ;)

you can be a doctor in the foreign service? does anyone know more about this?

i'm also interested in ways I can travel the world and be a doctor!

i second that request- any info on traveling medicine would be much apprecitated! thanks.

That would be pretty cool, being a doctor on a gambling cruise ship. I'd spend most of my days taking money off my patients playing poker. Then, when they slam their fist against a wall in a fit of rage from losing so much money, I'll treat their injuries and bill them for it, fleecing them again.

Here ya go guys...I had been researching this a while back too. It is a pretty cool thing, the site will give all the info. Basically you live overseas (this includes a possibility of living in countries not so friendly toward Americans, but the good thing is you can choose where you want to go, it's not guaranteed though.) Salary depends on specialty, knowledge of tropical medicine etc. Tax free overseas housing too, allowance and all that. My mom has a friend who works for the Dept of State and they move every 2-4 years to a different location. Hope this helps! :)

thanks so much! :)
