Bad to ask for a poster?

I would like to present at a conference in March of next year, but I just joined joined this Lab a month ago. Would it be too much if I ask my supervisor if I could work hard and get enough data in order to present a first author poster at this conference? Abstract is due in February.

You're putting the cart before the horse.

Produce the data first.

Then say "hey this figure is great, could I submit it to this conference?"

I disagree. I think if you haven't already done so you should have a meeting with your PI about your goals for working in the lab, which may include presenting a poster at a conference. Bring up this particular conference as a potential option at that point, but don't get your heart set on it.

It's fine to let the PI know one's goals but realistically until there's enough data it's kind of a moot point aiming for poster.
