Hello!

I'm a third year student, currently in the process of applying to 4th year externships (most likely in California and Washington).

1. Any advice on what sites are good or the application process? I'm planning on visiting/applying to UCSF, UCLA, Rady Children's in San Diego, California Ear Institute, Virginia Mason in Seattle and Seattle Children's.

2. Does anyone know any externs at these sites now or previously? Would love to know more about their experiences!

Thanks!

Check out Pacific Eye & Ear Specialists in Brentwood, CA. That's where I worked as an undergraduate intern. They accept 4th year externs. Your other choices are really good, too. You should also consider House Ear...

Thanks for your suggestion! I'm a little intimidated to apply to House :)

Does Pacific Eye and Ear have cochlear implants?

Does Pacific Eye and Ear have cochlear implants?

If you are attending the program I think you are, there are several faculty members that have connections to House Ear and I know the program has sent a couple of students there for their externship within the past few years...it's definitely worth a shot in my opinion! :).

No CIs, but BAHAs. I think you should definitely try House. You never know unless you try! :)

Also, since you're interested in CIs Providence Speech and Hearing Center would your best place. Unless, you don't like working with children. I'm currently working there as an audiology intern and we have a lot of pediatric patients with CIs and BAHAs. I'll PM your the audiology director's contact info. :)

You guys are so sweet! Thanks for the encouragement :) I definitely am needing some at this point!!

Spring88: You are probably right. But I'm only aware of one faculty member who has experience at House? Anyway, from what I've heard, House took people from our program a long time ago (before the discontinuation of the masters program), and things have changed at House since.

SoCalAuD: That would be really great, thank you! Looked up the website for Providence and it looks like a great location to extern! Do you mind if I ask you more about your experiences as an intern there?

We are probably thinking of the same faculty member (a name that would be well known at House Ear regardless). I'm under the impression that there were more outside the department. There are connections with House Ear with Bloedel over the "Hearing Regeneration Initiative"..but that is more research than clinical now that I think about it. I know there's been at least one House Ear extern within the past five years (I asked said faculty member about externships when I was deciding between programs). It seems like the whole externship process is like applying to grad school all over again :/.

Im currently a 4th yr AuD doing my externship in WA. The newest AuD at the practice I am at currently, did her externship at Children's and really enjoyed her time. The other 2 externs with me are doing 6 months at Evergreen Speech and Hearing and then 6 months at Virginia Mason which I hear is a fantastic program as well. I would encourage you to apply to Evergreen Speech and Hearing Clinic as they have a phenomenal externship program here. We do not do CI's or BAHA but other than that we do:

Peds and Audults, Phonak and Oticon HA's--soon to be Widex as well I believe, Audio, tymps, reflexes, VEMP, VNG, ECOG, ABR, newborn hearing testing for EHDI, as well as having monthly audiology meetings where we discuss anything and everything to do with new protocols for testing and other audiology related things for the clinic, we are starting up a Tinnitus treatment program, the externs do a project for the clinic that plays on their strengths, we rotate between the 3 offices and 4 audiologists, all the testing and treatment programs we have here are supported by the newest research out there. This is a truly unique program and I encourage you to check them out.

Hi guys! I have a question and it just occurred to me. How much does your externship play a role in getting your first audiology job? (broad question) I'm interested in pursuing an externship NOT on the west coast (due to wanting to experience a new place/specific career interests) but I would like to end up living/working in the northwest. However, if I'd like to live in the northwest, should I pursue an externship in the area? (specific question). This is a WAYS off but it's just something I'm wondering about :).

Im torn on this. Personally, I believe diversity is beneficial, but on the other hand, if you are 100% positive that being in the Northwest is where you want to be, then I can see the benefit in getting to know the professional community as a student so you have one foot in the door and an ear on the ground as to who is hiring. Not really sure that helped lol. Personally, I want to practice in the Northeast but I did my graduate work in the Southwest and my externship in the Northwest, for diversities sake. I think if you are a good enough audiologist then that should speak for itself.
