Rumor has it that ASTRO was planning on using Ariely's groundbreaking research on [checks notes] "where to sign your name on a form" on attestations for SOAP candidates stating they are indeed interested in radiation oncology and not just applying because they are not competitive for ENT and/or Urology.

No word if correct signature positioning increases honesty among program directors pledging to not SOAP.

Fact: If he had to sign a statement at the top of his manuscript attesting to the validity of the data, he wouldn't have allegedly committed fraud.

That's just awful. Happened to former Rockefeller president Arnold Levine awhile back (Rockefeller head quits as scandal looms - Nature ), not to mention some radonc chairs. Unlikely to be an isolated incident. These large institutions are usually complicit, many people are usually 'in the know' and keep a lid on it while harasser continues harassing.

Was a Duke med student/rad onc that was partly responsible for exposing potti, though, with institutional resistance initially.

Dr Perez trained in RadOnc at Duke and is now on faculty at Moffitt

There was more than one future rad onc involved. It’s tough being in that situation as a trainee and rare to take the ethically defensible position.

Why rescind the offer? Too many frauds in one place? Is ASTRO gonna take out all the mirrors at the convention center too?

Absolutely, Ben smith is probably a bigger fraud. He should retract the worst paper in the history of the specialty and any commentary on imrt being performed for financial gain. He sits on the Astro board.
