I was recommended to use this site as I get everything together to apply. I am taking the GRE and finishing prerequisites I did not get in undergrad now. My professors from undergrad seem confident I will do well on the GRE and that should help even out my mediocre GPA. I was just hoping for some feed back and help because this is all pretty overwhelming.
I did not do great in my early 20s at all but I have been told I could brushover my history in the personal statement and it could show some grit... I hope so! Anyway:
Undergrad degree: double major in philosophy and women’s and gender studies
Gpa: 3.4
Prerequisites (so far): 3.8
Observation hours: I work full time in a restaurant and am getting prerequisites now so I don’t have tons of time for observation hours, BUT I’m working on getting more. So far I have 20 in a out patient hands/ shoulders office that dealt a lot with workers comp.
I have an internship that involves some research with RSIs at a industrial plant in their on site health care office. I’m sure I will have over 100 hours there.
I have a lot of volunteer experience that mostly isn’t medical — Amnesty International, multiple drug and alcohol facilities, Juvenile Arbitration, two film festivals, one hospital, a women’s well being initiative, I tutored philosophy, building houses through a church, and at an arts pre school
I had a couple of academic scholarships and did an independent study with the head of one of my departments.
I have a disabling, chronic health condition that involves multiple specialists as the result of a TBI and I was told this may also help me show how I’m able to overcome adversity. I thought it would be best not to mention since I don’t want to seem incapable.
The NP I am interning for has offered to write a reccomendation, and a few philosophy professors have as well. I’m hoping to do more hours and get a different one, but all 3 OTs at the physical therapy office offered.
Anyway, I know I need a good GRE and more observation hours. I don’t think I’ll be able to afford a full time job that would help... I don’t even know if I could get one.
Any feedback helps!
I’m planning on applying to MUSC, stony brook, Lenore rhyne, Georgia tech, mercy college, and SUNY downstate Brooklyn.
