Hi everyone,

I'm a Greek national and just graduated from a Hungarian medical school.
I'm interesting in taking my postgraduate training in the UK, but i'm not clear about some things.

Considering my EU nationality and medical diploma, am I eligible for full registration?

If I am, what happens after registering? I'm supposed to look for job ads over the net and journals? And what kind of job, PRHO,SHO or what?

I'm interested in a radiology specialty. Do I have to take a 1 year intership in UK (internal medicine plus surgery) or not? A British pal of mine says I have to, but the guys from the GMC said it's included in my medical school training.

I'm supposed to send them my original passport/id card and diploma. Now these are very sensitive documents, has anyone out there done it? And do you think it would be safer to send them/take them back with courrier or if I go and give them myself?

Thanks in advance

Hey there

I don't know where we stand on the issue of wether you have full registration or not I'm afraid. The GMC won't care (much!) about your Greek nationality, it's the Hungarian degree they will consider when deciding about your registration.

As for training, the career structure is just in the process of being radically changed, so it's all a little up in the air at the moment.

Currently, if you had graduated from a UK school, you would have to do 1 year as a PRHO in gen med and gen surg, and then several (3-4 years) as an SHO in (and I'm not so sure of this, but I think it's right) both medicine and surgery. There will almost certainly be some exams in the SHO years. Eventually you become an SpR in Radiology, where you no doubt spend time in the various different types of Radiology, pass more exams etc, probably another 3 years or so, before hitting Consultant-hood.

This website - http://www.rcr.ac.uk - will probably be the most useful to you.

However, and this is the big thing, it's all changing! MMC (Modernising Medical Careers) is the buzzword... Essentially, when I graduate, there will be a 2 year Foundation Programme, with F1 being PRHO equivalent and F2 being SHO1 equivalent. F1 is not changing all that much from the current PRHO structure. F2 is a continuation of F1 at a higher level (previously you choose whether to go the medical or surgical route at this stage, not anymore). Then after F2, there is supposed to be something they're calling Seamless Training at the moment, where instead of rotating through lots of specialties, you go straight into what you want to specialise in.

Since the Foundation Programme posts are being rolled out country-wide next August, I suspect you will have to work you way into this system, which for radiology shouldn't actually be too bad.

I'm not sure I've helped any...

Best of luck!

Hi Fiona,

Thanks for your efforts. I wasn't sure about my registration class either, since none of the algorithms for finding it fits my case (EU national graduating from one of the new EU countries). However, I sent GMC various e-mails with my info, and they said I'm eligible for a full registration. I'm not yet clear on what are the differences between the two, other than the requirements for applying for either of them. Maybe you could help a bit on that, too?

It's a good thing things are under change, because I was stupid for not being able to understand what's going on. Seems I'm not gonna be the only one.

Thanks for your help again, I appreciate it.
