Navy Applying for residency with the VA

For anyone who has experience in applying for a perio residency with the VA, what advice would you give someone to stand out as an applicant? If someone applying has a spouse who is a Navy dentist, is there any sort of advantage for that applicant to get accepted into the program?

Probably not. As far as I know there are only 3 VA perio residencies, and the one in NY requires a gpr.
