It’s easy to want to kick back and celebrate once you finish your Personal Statement and Work and Activities section. And you definitely should! But don’t let this sense of relief stop your application momentum. Get started now on your Secondary Essays by drafting responses to recurrent themes BEFORE schools have even sent you their questions.

Getting a head start on these essays will make the Secondaries process much easier, as you’ll want to submit your answers quickly–within two weeks of receiving the questions. If schools like your responses, you could get one of the school’s earliest interview slots.

To start, we will explore four recurring themes in Secondary Essays. Today, our essay question is: How will you add to the diversity of our student population?

Your response doesn’t have to be about race, sexuality, or religion—of course, it can be. Think about what unique experiences and perspectives you can share. Also, consider how you have thrived in and learned from diverse environments in the past.

One Apply Point client wrote about how she spent her gap years between undergrad and med school in a corporate setting, working for a consulting firm that advises biotech and pharmaceutical companies. Her experience gave her a better understanding of disease etiology and product pipelines and insights into healthcare inequity. Part of her job involved speaking with doctors and researchers from around the world; between this and working in a hectic office environment, she improved her communication skills—vital to contributing to a medical school community, never mind in her career. And her atypical pre-med job meant she’d bring unique knowledge and experiences to her medical school class.
