Hi all,

I thought I'd start a thread in advance for those of us who either know that they will be in Phase II since they received no interviews in Phase I (hello, me), or who end up in Phase II after not getting matched in Phase I. Hopefully this can be a great source of support and information for all of us, as the entire internship process is not easy...

I gotta say, I'm feeling pretty discouraged after realizing I'll be in Phase II, especially with knowing that I'll soon be surrounded by my classmates who have all gotten interviews through Phase I. Anyone else going through this? And any advice with how to better prepare for Phase II? What have your experiences been like?

Been there. It sucks. You'll survive.

You'll be tempted to compare Phase II with Phase I, but that'd be a mistake. Phase II is very much a buyer's (applicant's) market, especially the past few cycles. There will likely be plenty of prestigious APA accredited sites in desirable regions. I felt that I had better options and odds in Phase II. Plus, the interviews were far less cold and more relational (Phase II is humbling for applicants and training sites).

That's what I am hoping for!! I was really grateful to hear that Phase II typically has a lot of great APA accredited site options. I looked through last year's Phase II thread--as if I'm not neurotic enough--and was happy to see many recognizable site names being mentioned. Thanks for the reassurance!

I know several sites personally that regularly go to phase 2, not because of the staff/training but because they're remote and not a top ranked national site (which compensates during match 1). Lots of good sites end in up in phase 2 (heck, I've seen Brown, UNC, etc in there in the last 2-3 years as well).

I would take a look at what your application lacked. Was it hours (nothing you can do) or can you re-examine your other stuff (fit, assessment of competitivenes, other materials). Do an honest assessment and ask lots of others. Ask your classmates that interviewed at spots you would have liked to view their stuff and to review yours. Ask more faculty and clinical supervisors you know. It's not a secret you wont match on match day, so take advantage of every resource and dont let ego get in the way of that.

I agree whole heartedly with this response. I went through phase II last year and was a reck/ hot mess on phase I match day. All of my other peers matched and were celebrating and I was forced to pull myself together, wipe my tears, and reassess my situation. It felt overwhelming to put in all of the work all over again. But it was COMPLETELY worth it. I reassessed my sites and what I wanted and I have to say that my match site in phase II is 1000% better fit and better experience for me than any of the sites I ranked and did not match with in phase I. It all works out. Give yourself time to cry and process match day because yes, it is hard. But put in the time and keep moving forward and you will end up where you are suppose to be. Just because you happen to go to phase II doesn’t mean that you are any less qualified or are not good enough. It just means you haven’t applied to or found the perfect site for you yet. Phase II doesn’t define you as a psychologist and no one after graduation ever asks or even cares. The fact that you completed internship and graduated is ALL that matters. Keep your head up. YOU GOT THIS!!

I think one of my major obstacles is wanting to go into pediatric neuropsychology with limited experience. I know that I want to gain more training in that field, but I'm finding it impossible to gain that training without prior experience (like the whole needing credit to apply for a credit card scenario). I'm trying to find a balance between reaching that goal but also aiming for a placement that I think I could achieve for match. Do you have any advice for that kind of situation? Because I'm pretty lost with what to do with this goal. At this moment, it feels like I may not be able to meet it in internship.

I'm already looking into my application materials too, because you have a great point, there are some areas which I should have overlooked by others and where I should revisit and make more clear. Thank you!!

Thank you so much for that! :bigtears: It's honestly really nice to come onto this site and see that I'm not alone in this. It's been really difficult for me to talk to my friends because they are going through Phase I and can't relate. What kinds of things did you reassess during this time, if you don't mind me asking? I guess I'm torn with how to begin this reassessment because it all still feels so overwhelming. It sounds like you're talking more about discovering what you really wanted in a site, rather than what your application looked like....? Like, how did you go through Phase II with a different mindset?

I didn't match in Phase I a few years ago after attending several interviews. I did two things differently in Phase II.

One, I expanded my geographic circumference to the entire USA. In the first phase, I applied to a very small and extremely competitive geographic area.

Two, I humbled myself and participated in mock-interviews (lol). Don't underestimate mock-interviews. I thought I was coming off as cool, calm, and collected during my Phase I interviews. It was pointed out to me during the first mock-interview that I came across as disinterested in getting the position being offered...

I ended up matching in Phase II with an APA Accredited internship.

Hi neurodoe! I am so sorry you didn't get any interviews in Phase 1, but hang in there, you still have hope! I just wanted to add a few thoughts after reading your response. As you know, peds neuropsych is an extremely competitive area. There will certainly be some sites left for it in Phase II that you can go for. It sounds like you are also considering aiming for sites that you could match at but may not meet your training goals. This is a decision you should spend a lot of time thinking about (if you haven't already). It is important to think about which is better for you long-term - matching at a site that does not meet your training goals 100% for the future, or taking another year to gain experience at a peds neuro practicum and maybe participate in a research project or something to beef up your application for that specialty and apply next year. Either way you can do phase II, but making that decision about which is more preferable to do will impact what sites you apply for and who you rank in phase II. This decision has a lot of factors, personal, financial, etc. but really take some time weighing it and weighing what values are important to you. My best advice is to think about five or ten years from now and what you need to do now to get yourself to where you need to be then. Good luck and I hope any of my thoughts helped!

This has definitely been on my mind and I’ve been struggling to think of which is better. I don’t want to give up on my goals, so I’m still going to apply to peds sites, but I’m also going to try and be more flexible with seeing clients across the lifespan. I’ve been treating adults for 3 years so I’m really itching to do something different. I really like your idea of thinking of the future and how to best get myself there. I’m going to think about that, cause I’ve heard internship has a huge impact on future job possibilities. Thank you!!

Oh man... mock interviews are definitely something I have been putting off!! I’m honestly somewhat thankful I have some more time to prep for interviews now. I know my friends went through them in the fall and they got a lot of great feedback. I guess I should suck it up and sign up for one thank you so much for the advice!!

My cohort mate had excellent hours, excellent experience, competitive number of batteries and so forth and received no interviews. I reviewed her materials and sites that she applied to and immediately saw the problems. She didn't specialize her cover letters to the site as much as she should have, and failed to mentioned specific aspects of training that she hoped to gain there. All of her sites were very competitive sites, and she didn't diversify the type she applied to. Her essays were too narrow in their focus as well. If I were some of the sites she applied to, I'd have been confused as to why they were even on her list. She applied to only major cities/surrounding areas. And from my perspective, most importantly: not one of those sites "fit" her. She was applying for who she wanted to be/be seen as, not who she actually is, at all. I think part of this process is accepting that while we are excellent candidates for some places, we are not all "top" applicants. Big fish/small pond style acceptance. Also, a highly competitive site doesn't guarantee the training you are actually seeking. Look for similar opportunities at less competitive sites. You can be a big fish there! And then make a case for why you are a top applicant for that site in your cover letter. Also, I've heard from TD over and over again, if you are only neuro/ only forensic.... don't say that in your interview. APA internships are generalist; You need to present general interests and why a forensic placement will help you achieve those broader interests, as well as other skills you need to develop that the site can provide training on.

As a TD, I wanted to reply to this. I'm not completely sure what the meaning behind this statement was, but if you're applying to a more specialty-focused track, we definitely want to know that you're interested in pursuing this specialty. For example, if someone was interviewing for our neuropsych track and told me that they were really wanting a generalist experience on internship, they wouldn't seem like a good fit for our program because we want to recruit interns who really want neuropsych experience. Internship is supposed to be considered "generalist" training; however, I really think this has morphed over the years and while all interns are supposed to have some sort of experience that isn't specialized, a good portion of specialized tracks have focused training in that area (i.e., forensic, neuropsych, health, etc.).

I agree. Even if it seems like it may "hurt" your chances at a particular site, TDs want to know if you have specialty-focused interests. If nothing else, it allows them to be frank and honest with you in letting you know A) if you'll be a good fit with them, and relatedly, B) if their site will be able to help you meet your career goals. Generalist sites may be able to tailor training a bit (or not) to help you get more of the experience that will make you competitive for post docs/jobs, and specialist sites may be able to try and get you some additional non-specialty training.

The last thing you and your potential TD want is for you to match to their site already knowing it won't get you what you might need, resulting in you potentially being unhappy/disappointed for the entirety of your training year.

This kind of goes along with one of my main concerns moving forward--is it worth applying to sites where you want the experience, vs applying to sites where you already have the experience? I WANT pediatric experience, but have limited experience with the population. Some have told me to apply for more adult-focused sites just to secure a placement, even though this is not meeting my goals.

Does anyone have the list of sites that were available in Phase II last year? I'm feeling very anxious today and would like to look at what was available last year just to soothe myself..

I couldn't find a list, but checked out Phase II threads from the past few years for an idea of what may be available.

I looked through last years Phase II thread and it helped to calm me down! My supervisor also told me that in the past there have usually been great options such as Johns Hopkins, UCLA, and other prestigious APA-accredited sites.

Hi everyone! I haven't posted around here much (have been lurking quite a bit) but found out this morning that I'll be going through Phase II. Feeling pretty disappointed, but trying to channel that into motivation for dealing with this internship process a little bit longer. Curious to see what sites will be available this phase.

Hey guys, I am so sorry that you are having to go through this unfortunate situation. Last year at this time I was in your shoes, so I know how it feels :( Just want to assure you that no matter what happens from here (e.g. matching in Phase 2, matching in Post-match Vacancy, taking an extra year etc.), you are rockstars and you will figure out a way to make it work (even if your mind is telling you otherwise right now). I was crushed last year when I didn't match, but fast-forward just one year and I was able to complete my entire dissertation and just matched at my number one ranked site. I'm not saying that to make you feel worse, but just to let you know that things can and do work out even when there are bumps in the road. I am happy to talk to anyone about this process based on my own experience. Feel free to PM me at any time!

There are some EXCELLENT sites still up for grabs. I am slightly shocked. Good luck to you all.

Do you know of any sites with forensic focuses? I've found a few but am worried I'm missing some/don't have enough on my list.

Hi all,

Sorry to hear that things did not work out today. Please take the day to apply some self-care and spend time with/talk to your support system. I also did not match during phase I last year, but matched to my first choice neuro program in phase II (which I found to be a better fit than all of the sites I applied to in phase I). If you are interested in neuro, please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have and best of luck with whatever path you decide to take (to participate in phase II or take a year to get additional experience).

I will definitely be applying to both Casa Pacifica and JCCA !! Do you have any thoughts about what to touch on in application materials? And if it happens, how best to prepare for interviews with these sites? You can DM me if you fee better discussing there. Thank you for being so willing to help!

I'm not applying until the fall but I see that many of my potential sites (VA and DoD) are available for Phase II which I think is comforting. It seems like being in phase II doesn't necessarily say anything negative about the site is that fair or is there a reason to be leery of sites with more than 1 open spot?

All it says is that it’s a buyers market these days. My site is rarely in phase ii and then randomly a few years ago none of our positions filled and since then we haven’t been in phase ii again. This is true of many great sites and I wouldn’t read much into it other than it’s a buyers market.

Hey everyone! I know this feels like a sucky position to be in! I just wanted to let y’all know that I’m a current intern at the VA site of the Missouri Health Sciences Consortium and we have some spots left.

I can not say enough amazing things about my experience here! If anyone is interested and wants more info about it, please don’t hesitate to ask!

I’m glad to see a good mix of sites on the list. Pretty disappointed that there are not many neuro options, but it looks like a lot of the sites have neuro opportunities. Good luck with searching, everyone! We got this!

Do any of you know if the statistics for match are different in phase 2? Like, should we still aim for 15 applications?

My DCT let me know that phase 2 is different as far as there are no statistical advantages of applying to a specific number. It's more of a matter of how many cover letters are you okay with writing this week .

Speaking of cover letters in Phase II make sure each of your cover letters speaks well to the training given by the site and how it matches your interests. Many times sites get flooded with applications and the cover letter is the main thing that’s read to screen you in/out for an interview so you want to take the next few days to really make it sing.

The only one that I knew totally off the top of my head was the site in Tulsa, as a close friend of mine completed her internship there, and she is a solid evaluator.

In Phase I, I applied relatively late in the game to 5 sites (due to family reasons/geography) and had 4 interviews. I did not match, yet my #1 choice is a newly accredited site with 3 unfilled spots in Phase II. I am truly perplexed by this outcome, since I felt like I was a good fit and very well qualified. The only reason that I can imagine is that they intentionally or inadvertently did not rank me at all. If the former, I have no idea what to improve. If the latter, I have wondered if there is any way to check if there was a mistake? Regardless, I will apply to the #1 again in Phase 2 though I am feeling pretty discouraged at the moment. On the positive side, there are more options in Phase II than Phase I (at the time that I applied) if I could convince my family to all move for a year. Any similar experiences or any suggestions on any of the above?

There likely wasn’t a mistake, however they may be willing to talk with you about why they didn’t rank you the first time and reconsider you for phase II. It can’t hurt to reach out directly to the TD and ask.

Those are two sites I didn’t even apply to phase 1 because I assumed they were too competitive. Do sites like that end up in phase 2 due to being selective about applicants?
