Here is the stance of AOFAS on Podiatry. I believe the AMA deferred to AOFAS on it's stance of DPM's.

I have to agree with some what AOFAS says about our profession. I would have loved to take the USMLE step 1 and 2, but that boat has passed for me. It's something I would have at least liked to see if my education was equal to the MD's in my school at SCPM of Rosalind Franklin (Chicago, IL).

However, needing ACGME approval is just overkill. AOFAS does not require its Ortho Foot & Ankle Fellowships to be ACGME approved so why should DPM's need their residencies to be ACGME approved??? does that make sense to anyone?
