Albany
Pros
  • Small class size (roughly 140)
  • 18 month pre clinical
  • Has a home hospital
  • Modified pass/fail pre clinical
  • More research opportunities
Cons
  • Total COA is about 30k more, (270k total COA)
  • On the opposite side of the country and have not lived by myself
  • Weather
  • No financial aid given
  • Away from family
AZCOM
Pros
  • Slightly less COA, Qualified for WICHE which brings tuition down to 52k, total COA would be about 240k
  • one minute drive from the school
  • Support system nearby
  • Would like to eventually practice and attend residency on the west coast, not sure if attending AZCOM over Albany would help with this
Cons
  • Letter grading
  • Rigorous exam schedule (2-3 exams weekly)
  • OMM
  • Large class size (around 250)
  • Take two sets of board exams
Summary: I don't think I'm interested in super competitive specialties such as dermatology, neurosurgery, plastic surgery etc. Currently I'm looking at fields such as anesthesiology, IM, PM&R, and possibly rads. Would going DO over MD here make a significant difference?

30k is nothing in the grand scheme of things, go MD. Would only consider state DO schools over Albany in this case.
