Hello SDN Psychiatry,
Research shows that > 50% of American psychiatric patients have at least 1 substance use disorder. Unfortunately, psychiatric residency training only requires 1 out of 48 months (~2%) to be devoted to learning how to treat individuals with substance use disorders.
If you are a psychiatric trainee or attending who feels ill-equipped to evaluate & treat the substance use disorders in your patients you may want to consider addiction psychiatry fellowship training
Information on addiction psychiatry fellowship programs, including a list of programs with available positions with a July 1st, 2023 start date can be found here:
Also, if you have any questions about addiction psychiatry training feel free to post questions here or DM me

Given the reciprocal impact of psychiatric and substance use disorders upon one another, there is a critical need for Addiction Psychiatrists trained in the diagnosis and treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental disorders.
