Would piano playing and work in the research lab count as "areas other than studies"? Or are these also technically studies?

I don't play any sports, and I cannot think of any other such activities.

I would say those are both good to list on an application. Research is probably considered studies though.

If your research shows up on your transcripts, do not include it. If it is outside of your transcript, I'd add it. I would for sure list piano if you are reasonably good at playing the piano but you you play Chopsticks and Heart and Soul and that is the extent of your playing, don't list it. Do you have any other hobbies?
