Does anyone have a general idea about the salary discrepancies between the two? I know that it's less in academics, but what constitutes less? What would you make coming out of fellowship?

Average 5 years out:

Academics $200,000 (upwards of $500,000 at some places)
Private Practice $405,000 (if interventional in the south up to $1mil+)

These numbers seem pretty high. Where are they coming from?

the numbers are not too high. I know a partner who joined a private cards practice who made 500k in his first year out of fellowship in the midwest.

But does the $200,000 after 5 years in academics seem high??

About $45-$60K, depending on the institution. Basically, a bit more than what residents of that same institution earn.
