2018-2019 Hofstra University

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also curious what you mean by "money". Has hofstra made moves to make tuition cheap/give a lot of scholarships?

Yes. The Zucker family provided a lot of money to the school and therefore they are very generous with scholarships.

Anybody else end up getting merit scholarships from Hofstra as of now? I know the admissions committee decides who gets merit scholarships, but I just saw a thread of someone who got a full ride recently...so I guess it is safe to assume they are starting to give them out now. I know we have to wait till March/April (according to the financial aid office) to hear about need based aid but I am just curious if anyone has heard from the admissions office or dean recently about merit-scholarships :)

waitlisted, 1st tier

anybody know if there is WL movement and usually when this takes place?

After receiving the continued interest email on 1/18, I just got placed on the 1st tier waitlist. Interviewed mid October.

1st tier waitlisted today, interviewed late Nov

Does anyone have some sort of idea as to how many people are assigned to each tier for the waitlist? I know this might be difficult to answer. Thanks!

Why did you choose Hofstra over other schools that you had in mind? Looking back, is there anything in the curriculum that you loved/Anything in the curriculum that you hated?

What sold it for me was the revisit weekend. It was clear that the faculty and administrators were extremely accessivle and dedicated to helping us succeed in whatever we wanted to pursue, and it held true. Our professors have an open door policy almost every day of the week, and they make it a point to know the names of all of their students. It made the first two years as enjoyable and personal as it could get, which I really enjoyed.

Looking back over the clinical years, there isn’t a thing I would change - we rotated at two large academic hospitals and the attendings and residents that I worked with emphasized student education. They’re all a great group of people to work with and at the end of the day, I had a pretty nice experience. Nothing really about the MS3-4 years I would change. Some people disliked the EMT curriculum, but it’s really meant to be a brief overview of everything as an easy segue into medical school (although as an MS1, it was easy to fall into the trap of feeling like you had to know everything). I wished there was some acknowledgement of those expectations, but otherwise I thought they worked out the nuts and bolts of the curriculum pretty well.

If you have more specific questions about the curriculum I’m more than happy to answer. Can also DM me if you want

Any MDPhD interviewees heard back? I interviewed on Dec 5th and hoping someone on here interviewed close to that date for MDPhD.

Can any current students speak to living on Long Island and where Med students usually live? On my interview day I met a lot of people who said that they commute from their parents home in the LI suburbs. Is this accurate for a large portion of the class?

In my class (MS4), I'd say about 3-4/100 commute from their parent's home, with a vast majority of people renting 2-4 BR homes in the East Meadow/Hempstead area for roughly $500-700/mo per person for the first two years. Then people usually move out closer to the hospital system for the clinical years (New Hyde Park, Bayside, Glen Oaks, Little Neck etc..) for about the same price. I'd imagine this holds true for the other classes too.

Two questions one from a friend, one from me lol

1) Anyone who interview last year and has not received anything, not even the under review email?
2) Any acceptances for people who interviewed after dec 3rd?

Thanks!!!

I know Hofstra STEP'S scores are good, but how do you feel about the curriculum/administration helping you prepare for these examinations? Also I can't DM because of a private profile.

I wouldn't say the curriculum is boiled down to the "essentials" for the boards, but the content is definitely there and it's up to you to use supplemental resources (First Aid, Pathoma, UWorld etc...) to narrow your scope of knowledge when the time comes that you want to start preparing. Regardless of where you end up choosing, I would be surprised to hear if the experience is different anywhere else. The structure of the curriculum makes it easy to see the bigger picture of things (at least for me) since everything is systems based. And as for the free response exams, they also include a non-graded MCQ exam that is similar in style and content to the step exams (NBME Questions), and the score reports which I thought were helpful.

As far as the administration helping, I hear that they're now paying for the Step 1 UWorld subscription (new this year maybe?), and have dedicated learning specialists to work 1:1 with students if they would like to develop schedules/test taking strategies etc.. Most of the other resources people own and senior classes usually find a way to make study resources easily accessible to the incoming classes.

Also, I DM'd you in case you wanted to ask anything else

Sorry, I think he was curious as to when you found out about the full-tuition scholarship. I'm curious as well lol! Did hear that news on the same day you found out you were accepted?

Has anyone who interviewed before Dec. 3rd not heard back?

Anyone else get the "let us know if you're still interested" email? If we are interested, we don't email back right?

+1 For the "Guaging interest" email. If you want to stay in the game, don't do anything.

Weird, I didn't get that and I have been at complete silence from Hofstra since completion of my application. Are you guys high-stats or something (for Hofstra atleast)?

I think maybe only people who have interviewed received this email.

Interviewed 12/07- Tier 1 WL on 02/06. Anyone know the movement on the wait list?

I got an MD/PhD accept mid January - but I also interviewed in September so take that as you will.

Congrats on the acceptance! Do you think it would be appropriate if I email Dr. Diamond personally for an update on my application?

Definitely. On my interview day she said that she's very open to that. Maybe also include a small update/reiterate you interest in the school but probably not a huge deal either way.

Second-tier waitlist, interviewed early January. I'm guessing this is pretty much a rejection?
