If you have low-ish stats / minimal research is it worth applying to DO programs if you want to stay in a specific area? For example, NY area. Just wondering why I'm not seeing any MDs in the ortho programs other than the Northwell one.

you’re not seeing MDs because DOs won’t take you unless you rotated and kicked ass, even with high stats.

DOs who match ortho usually have high USMLEs and other great parts of their app... applying to DO or MD programs will not be fruitful if you are not a good applicant

Even now in the time of COVID when aways are canceled / virtual?

ESPECIALLY now in the time of covid when aways are cancelled, applying to ortho with low stats and little research is not a good plan.

This. I would do a research year if you are serious about ortho
