You are probably looking at gross pay vs. regular pay. Perhaps they monetize the benefits that are offered, like retirement and health. Or maybe this factors in grant funding. I would be skeptical that anyone in academics makes that much. Or maybe these are Asst Profs who are more working as primarily clinicians so their salaries are higher. But again, probably not that high.
I can't be bothered to turn off my ad-blocker to read the articles. Is it "salary" or "total compensation" being reported? If the former, I don't really have a good answer. If the latter, sit on enough ad boards and consult for pharma and your academic salary is your "fun money".
