I am applying to medical school (allopathic and osteopathic) this June. I go to a small state school in Oklahoma and have a 3.93 for sgpa and cgpa. I plan to take the MCAT in May. I have been studying a lot so I plan to do at least average on it.

Non healthcare volunteer: approximately 30 hours organizing a carnival for special needs children. 6 hours doing relay for life. I also do 2 hours a week at a women's shelter (~20 hours so far)

Healthcare related volunteer: hospice volunteer since Feb 9 of this year (I see two patients twice a month)

Ecs: Rotaract club for 1 year. Scholars program for 2 years. Phi theta kappa for two years. Prehealth club for one semester

Research: I will be doing a biomedical research internship this summer (320 hours)

Hobbies: horseback riding, amateur astronomy

If you do average (like 500-505) you have a decent shot at most DO schools and maybe a few state MDs

I know I should at least do that well on the MCAT, but I'm hoping for 509+
I've studying for ~120 hours and plan to do about 300 hours

Well unless you bomb the MCAT....I would say good chances :smack:

Thanks I hope so! I have been stressing about it a lot

Your GPA is very stellar. Again, unless you bomb the MCAT or can't interview to save your life (or have a lengthy criminal history you are leaving out), you will be in medical school somewhere.

Thanks that is good to know! I have done a couple of interviews for scholarships and been successful. I believe I have very good interpersonal skills

Your GPA is golden. I feel confident in your ability to meet your MCAT goal.

Only part that looks like it could be weak is your volunteering. The average on here seems to be in the hundreds of hours. You might want to rack up some more hours, but nothing crazy.

Thanks! I'm trying to get some built up between now and June! My college town is really small and it's hard to find good places to volunteer at

This is just my personal opinion, but listing horseback riding as a hobby might not be the best idea. Coupled with a relative lack of... grim? ECs (other than hospice), this may suggest privilege to ADCOMs.

Grim? I'm very confused could you further explain all that

I might also add that I come from an extremely rural area and plan to practice rural medicine. I promise I'm not privileged.

Ah. In my area horseback riding has a very different connotation (extreme wealth). With the rest of your story, you should be okay.

By grim, I mean something that shows you are familiar with harsh and unpleasant realities. Hospice accomplishes this wonderfully.

Okay that's good to know! I literally live the middle of no where and there isn't much else to do lol I was raised around horses so it's a big part of my life

I've had a few opportunities to do small volunteer events but they just felt like fluff and that I would be doing them just to check a box. I wanted to do something that actually made a difference so I'm very glad I found the hospice and women's shelter opportunities but I just wish I had started them sooner

I might also add that I am a registered native American (Choctaw). I'm not sure how much that helps my chances, if at all.

You're golden kid! GPA is freaking amazing. Honestly as long as you score above 70th percentile I'd say you'll probably be accepted to any DO program

Thank you guys for you input I really appreciate it!

Donald J. Trump does being native American really help that much?

Being a URM with a 3.93?

Schools are going to start sending you applications.

That's great to know! I'm mostly interested in going to a DO school though because that really aligns with practicing rural medicine

If DO is where your heart is then by no means should you switch to MD. DOs make some of the best primary care physicians. Now, if you want to be a specialist (neurosurgeon, CT surgeon, etc) then you should probably go MD. But yes...HARVARD

Yes I am interested in primary care and I want to practice at the native American hospital in my hometown. I might apply to Harvard just to see what happens lol it would be cool to get an interview there

If you can get a MCAT score in the 80th percentile or above I totally would apply just to see what happens...you have nothing to lose

I definitely will. I'll just have to see how the MCAT goes. I have been dedicated to studying but also trying to work around my class assignments.

OP is from Oklahoma, it would probably be more of a question mark if he didn't ride horses. It is the cowboy state. Riding horses isn't really a sign of wealth in the US like it is in some other places.

Yeah you're fine, definitely list it.

Dude I will be straight up, focus on the MCAT. If you are able to get something like 510+ you will have your pick of any medical school in the nation and would essentially be a shoe-in for OU or OSU (you most likely already are for those two honestly) The poster above isn't kidding, with your GPA and a decent MCAT you could only apply to the top 20 schools and you would have more acceptances than you would know what to do with.

If you do well in the MCAT I would apply to OU, OSU, and then any other medical school you want to.

I know its tempting to post these threads when youre bored of studying but they wont help you at all. Youre just wasting study time.

Come back and post again when you have an MCAT score, its impossible to help without one

Thank you everyone I feel much better now about things. I study everyday for the MCAT, and have been doing well on practice passages but I need to take a FL soon. Im fairly certain I won't bomb it but I'm definitely going for 509+

That is a nice stat!! WHOA
I have 3.7 at CC lol I am not even close to that GPA

Only a 3.93? Yikes. Too bad grade replacement is gone. ;)

Keep doin' you OP, if you do well on the MCAT you'll be golden.

Update: made a 513 on the MCAT

Is it possible that I could get some scholarships to medical school?
