I am assuming that you have not given NBDE-1 exam.
I think Boston Univ-Goldman has Post-graduate program that does not require NBDE scores if you are not PR or citizen of US.

Below is an excerpt from their post grad website:

"
National Board Dental Examination Scores for International Students
International applicants who have taken the NBDE should submit official score reports. Applicants who are US citizens or Permanent Residents, and those whose dental education was obtained in the USA or Canada are expected to take the NBDE. International applicants to Postdoctoral Programs who do not fit into the preceding categories and who have not taken the National Board Dental Examination are not required to submit NBDE scores.

hello Tita, i think any kind of 2 yrs of post-doctoral program experiences will give you the eligibility to practice in certain States in US.

hey!
I am a dentist from India and was planning to go for a speciality program directly and go for a license in Florida. As far as i gather the criteria for Florida state board have changed. They have now made it mandatory to have a DDS/ DMD to be eligible for license.
Anybody has concrete information/ any updates regarding the same...any information would be welcome.
plz correct me if i am wrong wid my information. (i hope i am) :)
thank you.

Hi everyone,
I have completed MDS from India. Now I am in philadelphia. I would like to do Masters/Residence program in clinical subject, preferably endodontics. What r the preparatory steps i need to take to apply for masters program..? pls. help me..Thank u.

I doubt it, unless that was years ago as Wisconsin only accepts General Dentistry residencies

What are the current states that allow FTD to practice after completion of perio or pros program?

Hey i wanted to know how to apply for such ms programs and what will be the fees of such programs.

hey even i m in the same boat. let me know if u find anything

Just got my license from Illinois after 2 years of residency BEFORE completing the residency. Does anyone have any similar experience, 'cause I'm wondering what other states might do the same. As far as I know the majority of those few states (11 now?), which would allow a foreign dentist to practice without DDS/DMD require a certificate (completion) of the residency (e.g. TX, VA)
Of course, I passed NBDE (1&2), NERB and currently in good standing in the program. Does anyone know what states will open by reciprocity WITHOUT DDS/DMD after 5 years? Because I couldn't get a definite answer on the ADA website.

Hello Biowidth

First of all congratulations on getting a license. So is it a limited a license( work under supervision or a normal full fledged license. Because I am planning to do the same thing. I am in VA. And did you do AEGD/GPR or just a post doctoral certification course. At NYU they are offering a 2 year certification course in endodontics, comprehensive dentistry and pediatric dentistry. So i am exploring my options. Please guide me..il be really thankful.

Hey,,, where ever you live,, or may be whatever states are in the list where you wish to study,,, go to the university websites and check for such programs,,,you'll find all the details you want...but do check if they are accredited by CODA.

it's a "usual" dental license, no restrictions mentioned whatsoever. As far as I know, VA will issue you a license as well, as long as you pass all the exams mentioned previously and complete 2 years or more of ADA accredited program in the US and receive a certificate or diploma. So will TX. What makes IL very different (and may be some other states???) that IL doesn't require the actual completion and the possession of the diploma, just completion of 2 years of your ADA approved training. In other words, you can be in the beginning of your 3rd year of your 3-4-5 year program and get a license. It was purely my own discovery - nobody ever mentioned that to me before. The reason I didn't do PASS, 'cause I used to practice both Perio and Prosth back home - so I chose Perio/Prosth residency at Penn. As long as your program is ADA accredited - you are eligible in those 11(?) states, incl VA,TX,IL,WA etc Hope, it was helpful. Good luck!

Can you please tell me what are the rest of the states that we can practice after certificate program beside VA,TX,IL,WA?
thanks

it's all described on ADA.org, but I would recommend calling/writing to each dental board of the states you are interested in, 'cause there are always nuances. All states have different criteria, and changes take place as well, e.g. FL requires PASS since last year.
http://www.ada.org/490.aspx
PS the information used to be free, now they want $44 for the book

Thank so much.

Alright,,,thanx a lot for guiding me... but I have another question,,, recently i heard that even though the two year program makes us meet the eligibility criteria but after getting the license its diff to find a job coz people prefer citizens with DDS/DMD over our 2 yr programs education. Is that true? i mean did you face any kind of things like that?

...different parts of the US in general might have various "tolerance" for foreigners, to begin with. Otherwise, it's all about your personality and professionalism. Please note the order of features)) Plus if you are lucky to stay in the area of your dental school, by the time you graduate you should be well introduced to patients and the potential employers. Don't wait till graduation to start establishing yourself.

I want to know some more information about this plz

Ancient thread resurrection....

Anyone know if this is still a viable option for foreign trained dentists.... i work with a couple and this may be beneficial for them.

I pretty sure it is still true but if you want to make sure you have to spend $44 to buy the ADA handbook to find out.

Hello,

Anyone know if FTD can work in Federal dental clinics as Community Dental Clinics.
I already passed Part I,Part II, WREB and doing my second year of AEGD program.

Thank you.

If anyone is willing to share and buy the ADA guide, am ready!

In which school you are doing your AEGD program ?

One doesn't need to pay for a guide. The information is free and open to everyone.
I did some research a year ago (checked with every board of every state).
After completing residency other than AEGD/GPR you may apply for a license in the below states:
MN, MI, LA, MS, OR, TX, IL( IL is a very unusual state in terms of getting a license. They'll give you one after finishing 2 years of any residency.). Also, if you are OK with being restricted to working as a faculty, then count VA in, too.
After completing AEGD/GPR:
MN, MI, LA, MS, OR, IL, WI (1 year of GPR/AEGD is sufficient for this state), OH, KY, FL, VA(1 year is enough).

There are a couple states left unmentioned, like CT (residency-> limited faculty license for 3 years. Only afterwards you'll get an unrestricted license). MA (no residency required. Limited license. Community centers. Residency will give nothing). MD (license is given for a year only for pedo, GPR\AEGD). TN (limited license. community centers. Any residency is a requirement).
CA- 3 years of practicing as a specialist in any other state and you are eligible (reciprocity)
WA used to give a license after a 2-year residency. But heard the gateway had been closed.
By the time you graduate this information most probably will become obsolete (less states will be giving a license)

Thanks @ Lopatin
My wife got I to GPR and IDP which should she choose ?

If I were in her shoes I would chose GPR. It's a no-brainer to me.
GPR's pros:
Salary
Experience.
No need to study all over again.
GPR's cons:
Are you OK with living in the aforementioned states (possibly, even less in the future)?

IDP's pros:
50 states are open to you.
after completing the program she'll be able to get into a decent and competitive residency program like ortho or OMFS (those programs are virtually closed to FTD without a US dental degree).

cons:
outrageously expensive
student life
little experience

Thanks but she wants to DDS and says its tougher to get into and opportunities are more later on?

thanks lopatin it's a great help! I m jst beginning my residency in perio and I m really not interested doing anything other than perio....do u know if thts possible in any states...I mean something like restricted license or something...

when you said "other than AEGD/GPR" you mean AEGD/GPR doesn't count? I was pretty sure they do count as post doctoral experience for getting license in these States. Please clarify, thank you.

By saying that you need to have practiced in another state as an specialist for 3 years, does it mean that completing 3 years of AEGD or GPR or combined in another state will also make you eligible to apply for licensure in California or by specialty they mean Prostho, Endo, Perio, etc?

I'd appreciate if someone clarifies that!

Thanks,

Thanks but she wants to DDS and says its tougher to get into and opportunities are more later on?

Hi,

I am also trying to get into a GPR. Can you please share her experience, degrees etc.

Thanks

Dear Lopatin, Why one has to be a faculty in VA to obtain a license? It says: 12-month program of Advanced.... Or any other specialty and you apply for a license

These state boards, I just call them up and ask them as an Intl student what my options are? Also do I have to give gre? Should I apply individually or through pass and match?

Hi Biowidth,

How long did it take for you to get the IL dental license. I just applied for it last month after finishing 3 year residency.

Thanks

hi, something about 5-6 weeks - don't remember exactly, but it was a reasonable and very easy-going pleasant experience

Thank you every one. Some very helpful advice. Much appreciated :D
I too would like to know about options to practice after doing an approved Perio residency program!
Would be very grateful if someone could ENLIGHTEN us both!!!
THANK YOU:D

Can someone tell me what is the average cost of a masters program for orthodontics, periodontics and pediatric dentistry?
A range would also do just to compare it with the cost of DDS
