Greetings, I have seen a decent amount of Touro Haters on here but most have nothing bad to say about Touro Nevada campus. I have been accepted here and am wondering how people feel about this institution and why do so many people hate on Touro besides the NY admissions mishap??

any validity to the hating or just a bandwagon forum trend?

First thing's first, aside from the 5 letters "Touro" the 3 campuses (4 if you count Middletown but their curriculum is identical to Harlem) couldn't be any more different.

They are (for the most part) completely separate entities and function pretty much independently- all with their own and different curriculum. I interviewed at both Nevada and Middletown and it was like interviewing at completely different schools (makes sense because they are completely different schools).

There was one thread titled "warning about Touro NY" made by @doczebra where he/she fabricated most of what they said- for example he/she initially mentioned that he/she were an M1 and hated the school, then all of a sudden he/she was an M3 with a 260+ step 1 all within one year.

After doing some research, the only thing that really concerns me about Touro NY is their level 2/3 pass rates which hover around 80-85%, well below the national average, although after switching to the flipped classroom curriculum, their level 1 pass rate has improved to over 96%.

Most of what gets passed around is he said she said with not a lot of concrete evidence to back it up. Don't get me wrong, every school has their problems, but I believe it's been blown out of proportion and the over-enrollment last cycle certainly didn't help their cause.

As for the Nevada campus, I loved how willing the admissions/faculty were to help, and the lax attendance/dress code policy is a huge plus for me. Final thought- I wouldn't pick a school based on how much hate/how popular it is on SDN. Go with what feels right for you and what you'd think would be a good fit. Also try to find current students and talk to them directly, instead of reading what anonymous people have to say on a message board.

The Touros should be considered completely separate from one another. I haven't ever really heard anything bad about the NV location outside of the building it's in (basically a Kmart haha). The NY campus had the one issue but I personally dislike them because of their step 2 pass rates are consistently low, and the fact that it is in NY. You couldn't pay me enough to live in NY. Honestly I would still go where you think you fit in best, and wouldn't worry what SDN says about a school.

For what it's worth, the pediatrician I shadowed and his wife went to that school and he was just voted best pediatrician in the valley. n=1, but I'm sure you could become a good doctor from there.

Not like it really matters unless you get another acceptance.

Think of the buffets at the casinos!!

so overpriced and not worth the hype. ): for $50 per person, you can get some seriously good grub elsewhere (the ramen in that area is superb).

It's more like $3.35 for all you can eat buffet! Steak, shrimp, and a side order of any STD you want! It's truly unbeatable!

PS I also can't think about Vegas food without seeing that scene from Vegas Vaction...

When I was interviewing there, there was a big fear about, I forget which, but either a branch campus of an MD school opening or a new MD school opening swiping most of the Touro-NV rotations. I don't know if that came to fruition or not, but something you should look into. I didn't like my interview there at all. I agree with the "campus" being pathetic at best. The atmosphere inside the school was severely depressing. None of the students I talked to gave me any indication that they were happy there.

UNLV School of Medicine received LCME pre-accreditation so I believe they have begun enrollment for their 60 student class. This is the school that will probably take precedence in the Nevada region and will probably overshadow Touro-Nevada. Why? 1) It's not a renovated costco building (https://www.unlv.edu/medicine/campus) and 2) It will take charge of the only Level 1 Trauma hospital in nevada and will subsequently transfer the GME leadership of UN-Reno to UNLV.

Why do MD schools get priority? Do they get dibs on rotation spots and just kick the DOs out?

Partnerships. Hospitals are willing to partner with md schools because many times the name brings in more patients for them.

The UNLV medical school coming into the valley isn't going to overshadow Touro Nevada. Really it is just going to hurt all of the students at UNR that can no longer rotate at UMC. Touro Nevada has been around so long that it's going to be impossible to overshadow. Touro has established relationships with the majority, if not all of the hospitals in the valley and the private practice physicians. Even most recently, the new Henderson Hospital is going to be involved with Touro Nevada so I really don't see UNLV doing much or taking priority.

As far as the Touro campus, I think its actually pretty good and the school continually updates and makes changes based on student input. I feel bad for those who end up going to UNLV trying to find housing close enough or dealing with driving to downtown las vegas. You can literally live within a 5 minute walk of touro. Not to mention UNLV will have a virtual anatomy lab instead of an actual cadaver lab like Touro-Nevada, which I think makes it a lot tougher to really understand and learn anatomy.

Nevada resident here, UNLV should have no effect on touro. UNLV will be taking over the clinical rotation sites that were already used by UNSOM. And they're planning on building a new site for all of their rotations that are not currently at UMC.

Agree to disagree here. The university name, state support, research, type of faculty and seniority within the field of academic medicine (Touro NV will not compare in terms of UNLV faculty with active R01 grants) as well as affiliation with major level 1 trauma hospitals will make the school a big deal in the area.

When I say overshadow I do not mean infringe upon TouroNV students clinical rotations at community hospitals and preceptor based clerkships. What I mean is recognition in NV and overall preference. Students would much rather go to an MD school in state, spend less, have more resources in clinical training and research, than a private DO school and pay a ton more.

Oh gotcha yeah I agree with that. I was just jumping off of the person before you talking about rotation sites being taken due to UNLV.

For right now's sake, 60 students from the inaugural class of UNLV will not severely affect the education and clinical experiences for 125 TUNCOM students.

Vegas has many hospitals in the area that haven't been tapped into yet. Both of these schools combined will have a smaller class than many DO schools in very rural areas with no hospitals nearby.
