'05 is probably our best bet, it will be easier to reference vs. flipping through the book to find info. about different subjects.

Let me ask you this bentley. What is your fav place in the world? I mean the place where you can find peace and feel@ ease with no tension. no stress. no fear. sitting on a beach chair in Bahamas? movie theater? shopping mall? your home bedroom? or may be your girlfriends lap? not any more buddy. You got to start loving your medical library. Library is the best place in the world. Name another place in the world which could be more peaceful than medical school library?. may be you can compare a peaceful temple ( not in north america. They are more disruptive than a fish market. Have you been to flushing temple in NYC?), a mosque or a church.
My fav place in the world is medical library. It is so cheap and safe place which can also bring joy and fulfillment.

Give me an air-conditioned library.
a comfy chair.
an interesting book. not a biochem book though.
I can live in a library forever.
Start liking your SRMC library. Find a favorite spot and chair. settle down. Dont get used to reading in your room. You might become lonely and feel claustrophobic. Make it a habit to visit library every single day. Like going to gym. People should start gossiping that bentley is a permanent fixture in your school library. If they cant find you anywhere they should be able to find you in your permanent spot in the library. Librarian should come to personally know you by your first name. Library is also a great place to make friendship with quality people than in a bar or nighclub.

I am so tempted to start NYer's online SDN medschool private tutoring for jumpman & bentley company.
Let us talk more regional anatomy here. Upper extremity. You can forget or ignore to read anything in upper extremity. but, not brachial plexus anatomy. If you know brachial plexus well, you know everything in the shoulder and extremity. It is like NY subway driver knowing the subway system thoroughly. If you know the subway system: you know New York city.
If you know the brachial plexus: you know shoulder and UE.

Brachial plexus anatomy is going to haunt you forever. Whatever specialist you become in future brachial plexus knowledge is very essential. A neurologist need to know this for electrodiagnostic study. Hand surgeon must be well versed with this to operate on hands. Orthopedic and vascular surgeon cannot get away without bracial plexus anatomy. even Ob/GYNs need to know this for diagnosing erbs palsy. This is just like learning your preschool ABCD.

Brachial plexus is like a big banyan tree with several branches burried deeply into your armpit. Learning anatomy is not rocket science. It is also not a thing to memorize. You just need to use your imagination and remember the facts. When you read about a particular muscle. You need to know the following facts.

Why this muscle is called by this particular name? Where this muscle originates and ends? What happens when this muscle contracts? What happens in nerve injury? What is very special abt this muscle? Is this muscle related to any specific pathology or disease or any function?

I always wondered why medstudents and some physicians spend $$ on computer games and stuff. It is addictive and time consuming.
One surgeon in newyork city was hooked with computer games and became so addicted to it. He was so good and fast in his hands while playing computer games and x-box. Then, he realised he could use his hand skills for laproscopic surgery which needs faster and delicate movements to perform minimally invasive surgery.He is so successfull in his field and now gives training courses in laproscopic surgicals skills using some computer games. That is so cool.I always think abt inventing some animation games to improve anatomy study. May be it is already in the market?
I have some anatomy games to play with when you are bored. It is so silly game jumpman. It is called ABCD anatomy game.

Start A...B....C..
A for Anconeus muscle, anterior tibialis.......and think abt all the muscles which starts with A, think abt origin, insertion, nerve supply, etc.
Then, B for Brachialis, Biceps....
C for Coracobrachialis
D for Deltoid
E for Extensor Hallucis brevis,longus
F for Flexor Hallucis brevis,longus
G for Gracilis
H for Hamstrings...

Didn't i tell you it is a silly game?
I also had another mini game to improve my memory. It is called called twins and triplet game. Think abt paired muscles in the body like
pectoralis major & minor
teres major & minor
Longus & brevis muscles
tripletslike gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and minimus. Those muscles have either common origin or inserion. so it is easy to study them together. another silly game

Oh! yeah..i forgot to mention another useful books: anatomy made ridiculouly simple and neuroanatomy made ridiculously simple. These are great books and must have.( I am planning to write a book called anatomy made ridiculously sexy )

2. Mean grouch professors?
haha you swear all the profs here are senile-- sure of course you got the hard asses who want to shape you up and YES they will pick on you.. but lets be more specific..everytime a prof would pick on a student -- everytime in my class at least -- that kid would be doign soemthing stupid like texting or talking... and guess what the teacher wouldnt even start on the hard questions.. he would tell that student to stand up and simply say "what did I JUST say" -- if you want to talk back to that -- you dont have the respect and discipline to be in medical college...
And sure there are a few profs who are out to get you... but the majority of your time is spent with post graduates (classroom assistants) and they are always there to help you.. shoot i even was able to copy class notes from one of them no questions asked. By far you will find more support then criticisms if you are humble and approach appropriately.

I always respect teaching profession and is even nobler than medical profession. Someone mentioned in this thread that indian medschool teachers are not qualified in teaching like having a degree in teaching. i dont think even american physicians who teaches medicine have any special degree in teaching.

I really had few great medschool teachers and very memorable ones. Few physicians are role models and few others are bad models who remind me not to turn out like them in my career. You cant forget your anatomy teachers in your career. They are like your kindergarden teachers.
I distinctly remember this anatomy assistant professor. This guy was a ex-surgeon who was alcoholic cum chain smoker. He once became unconscious after excessive boozing and burnt himself in the couch because of burning cigarette. He lost his right arm due to post burn above elbow amputation. Imagine a surgeon losing his right arm? It is worse than a sprinter losing his leg. He luckily got his job as asistant professor teaching anatomy to medstudents.
This armless surgeon was a great teacher. We had like 7-8 anatomy teachers. He was the best. He can talk about any viscera of the body for hours. My heart always ached when he taught us upper extremity vascular anatomy in the dissection lab.There was also another anatomy teacher who is also hard to forget. She was a dark obese woman who had a voice like yelling whoopi goldberg. I loved her classes. She will never let any medical student to peacefully nap during her postbrandial hot afternoon anatomy lectures because of her sturdy voice. I can even feel her voice echoing in my ears right now detailing the testicular anatomy. nah! it is just a dejavu phenomenon. For some unknown reasons she had passion in teaching human reproductive anatomy. Her voice became emotional during those sessions.

There was another young orthopedic surgeon who was a hot dude. Chicks in my class always drool and drowned us in his orthopedic sessions. His status was equivalent to Brad Pitt. Guys hated him. He knew the stuff and lectured us with his role play. He use to imitate like patients suffering injuries excetras.
Whats goin' on jumpman? Have you bought your books? Are you all set to go to madras?

Come on man, you should be an emotional wreck with mixed feeling abt going to india for medschool. WOW..you are going to wear that dazzling new white lab coat soon. Man, let me tell you this. I loved that white lab coat so, so much before getting into medschool. It was the only sexy thing which motivated me to get into medschool. It was a driving factor to score me high which got me the admission. That white lab coat carries so much weight in india. Commoners respect that white coat everywhere. Engineering students envy that white coat. It makes parents proud in India. I always love that clean, spotless white coat. who doesn't? It is the sexy uniform next to naval uniform.
BTW..get some cheese cotton and finest egyptian cotton shirts to beat the heat in india.

Alright. This guy ILuv2BMD is asking this question to everyone. How many hours to study in first year medschool? How many hours are you gonna study, jumpman? I also had this same question when i was in third year.
During my 3rd year medschool i starting seeing haziness and was not able to read the blackboard from a distance. I was becoming myopic. I got so scared. may be i was reading too much medicine with quasiaddictive movie watching. I started getting worried that would become blind if i read excessive hours. I went for an opthalmological consultation to this eye surgeon. He diagnosed me with mild myopia and recommended prescription glasses. He is well known to our family. I asked him in very low murmeric tone. Doc,...How many hours is safe to read every day? like approximate hours? He looked at me very cheaply and replied 26 hours a day.

How many hours do you think Kobe Bryant will practice his game everyday to stay in top of the game? How many hours Muhamad Ali would have practiced when he was the world champ? I guess until they become tired and exhauted.

My experience says it is not the time you spend in reading matter. What matter is efficiency. How effectively you use your time to read a particular topic? Some guys have great technique and dont read for hours. Some guys read for hours together and consume nothing.
I liked this technique.

Know abt the topic of lecture in the next day class room.
Scan the subject in your book previous day.
Concentrate in your classroom, register in your brain every facts dropping from the mouth of lecturer. take notes.
Come back to the room and read the topic again.

I love loneliness. it is a beautiful thing eventhough sometimes it is lunatic. so what is happening in srmc? Do they have any support group in srmc for people like you who come fresh from america?
In America, they always form support group for new immigrants who come from underdeveloped countries like ethiopia, papua newguinea excetra to get used to american life. I also think guys like you, bentley and others definitely need some moral support for the first few months in india to adapt to the culture shock. madras culture is too fast for you guys.Trust me. It is not gonna be easy man. madras folks are too modern particularly girls.

jumpman, you have a long hours ( 20? 22?) flight to madras. What are you gonna do in the flight? Think abt new life in india? I still remember my flight to newyork for my step 3. (first visit). It was a mind boggling experience. I almost forgot my whole step 3 preparation with that excitement of coming to america. Those inflight newyork video was too distractive for a step 3 taking candidate. It showed mouth watering newyork cuisine serving restaurants, stunning american women and all excitement to be experienced in newyork city.

Right. you are in different situation. you are flying in opposite direction. Nothing is goin' to create excitement for an american in india. Let us talk abt your aircraft. I always wondered why people compare doctor to a pilot and aircraft to a patient for the responsiblity. Anesthesiologist are sometimes compared to pilot when putting patient to sleep. even surgeons are compared to pilots. That is the reason for 80 hours rule in residency. If a pilot dont sleep adequately he cant fly a plane. samething for doctors.

It is true in a way. doctors can be compared to aeronautical engineer. Human body can be an airplane. I really think 'art of medicine' is more complicated and extensive than aeronautical engineering. How many years it takes for an engineer to learn all abt airplane? I dont think lifetime is enough for a doctor to learn all abt human body and keep upto date.

Noone ever gave me any orientation before joining medschool abt what to expect in medschool? How to read appropriately? What are we really learning in medschool? Everyone knows that we are gonna read abt human body. what else? But, it really takes several months to get a clear picture and get that maturity. I was able to realize/feel that maturity only after completing my medschool. I hope you understand the message i am trying to convey to you, jumpman. It is like going to driving lessons. You are very stressed up during the classes with driving instructor, learning abt rules, knowing abt car mechanism, spending money for each lessons excetras. In the mean time you forget or stressed out to enjoy the fun of driving. Medschool is nearly and exactly same. As a medstudent you are stressed out for everything and you miss the fun. You forget to enjoy the present time and always think abt future. I am gonna tell you how to have fun at medschool which i did not have.

i truly agree with you Jumpan regarding the fact that NewYorker knows what he's talking about and all his posts are very informative and well addressed. Quite an entertaining and knowledgeable guy he is...i would recommend you to open a blog in the future and posts down all the experience you had throughout your Med School Career and mistakes that you have done during the course so that students in the future who are deciding to go to an indian med school, knows exactly what its like and what to expect...once again ur a great help!!

Dont start abt my socializing skills in medschool, then this thread is gonna endup as SDN version of How NYer got kissed? Got Wild? and Got a life? kinda novel screwing up my life. Already this thread has all indications of becoming another SDN megathread. I dont want jumpman to endup as skirtchaser in his first year medschool. My first year was a mess, man. That is the only reason i am sticking only with academic advice. Dont stimulate me and then some premed from NY city will come and threaten to beat me up in queeens. you have no idea abt NYers history here.

How could some one forget his first day in medschool? That is another memorable day in an individuals memory bank like first kiss, first wedding night, first girl friend and first real job. It is absolutely an important event. To be honest, i wasn't nervous at all. I was so excited to go to school all dressed up with excitement looking forward to see my female classmates.

My medschool is a state school and takes all types of candidates ranging from rich to poor and from upper to lower castes. That is the beauty of india. You see different religion: different caste: different social class: a pure mixture.
My school was brightened up that day with parents of some 200 future doctors wearing 200 megavoltage brightness on their faces with million dollar smiles. happy and proud. Most of the students hailed from below average family from small towns and villages. Remember i am talking abt india here, not new york city. Imagine a farmer coming to medschool for the very first time with his son or daughter who got medschool admission only because of his/her scores. I remember seeing so many parents in that category. Not every medstudent in india has a physican parent like yourself and fortunate.

Medschool in india use to have a ritual called 'ragging' which was an original tradition of seniors get to know the juniors. I am not sure whether ragging still exists in india. I think it is banned now because it has turned ugly and seniors started torturing the juniors in the name of ragging. Ragging can range from fun to torture. I remember performing striptease in front of ladies hostel in my medschool.
First day is always orientation and tour. lots of advise. excetras and you get tired.
Well, so you want to know how many hour study is necessary for a wanna be cardiothoracic surgeon? Remember if you become a CT surgeon there is a very high chance of you getting stuck in the operating room for marathon hours every single day. I know one guy who is a chief in CT surgery at US university hospital. He won every single prize awarded by the medschool on every single subject. He spent every awaken hour with books in his closed room of mens hostel. The only time he was away from books was during his bedtime. atleast that was the rumor.

First year schedule? I think it varies from school to school.
Our first year which is 18 months.
Morning: 8-12 is anatomy dissection with some break in between. They also had histology sessions, osteology sessions on few days.
Evening: 1-4 is theory classes/lecture includes gross anatomy, physiology and biochemistry.
They divide the students into category and percentages. 50% of students go for upper limbs dissection and rest for lower limbs dissection. I think we dissected for 3 months and then switched, followed by thorax, head/neck and abdomen.

It is so depressing to be a 1st year male medstudent. You are the lowly creature in the whole campus. no one respects you. lowest rung of the ladder. even 1st year nursing student carries some weight and be in better shape than you. Those chicks get attention atleast from interns if they are reasonably goodlooking. dont worry jumpman. you can get through this low points in your life.

Let us talk abt some abdomen anatomy. It is easy to read body organs like esophagus, stomach, colon and rectum excetras. Concentrate on sizes and layers of the organ. Focus on important structes like liver, spleen, kidneys, testes. Clump glands together and study them like gallbladder,pancreas and adrenals.

What is the most efficient way to study this dense material?
There is no single way.
Curiosity helps a lot.
It is hard to explain this to you because we are both in different altitude. I am not sure whether this is going to make any sense to you. There is no harm in givin' a try.
For example when you go the library dont just browse your first year books. Try to scan also pathology, medicine and surgery books. You dont have to read the 3rd and 4 yr books. Just look into the index, chapters and contents of the books. Just browse the pictures and illustrations. Be curious to know what you are going to read in future. Visit the journal section of the library and browse the journals. No. You dont have to read anything. just browse it.

Why? if you are gonna read abt gall bladder anatomy. know a little abt jaundice. If you are reading pancreas, know a little abt diabetes. If you are reading kidney you should know abt stones. What is kidney failure? It is alright for NYer not to know all abt this when he was in medschool. but, jumpman you are a 21st century ultra modern american medstudent. Medicine is gonna advance leaps and bounds before you graduate from SRMC. You have to conquer those hardcore home grown desi medstudents with knowledge. later.

How was Residency for you, did you have time for chicks during your Med school career. How did you manage to socialize and then concentrate in studies at the same time. I know that Medicine studies is sooo interesting that you would not want to leave the books...but how was it from your perspective. In india, there were 50,000 seats for engineering and 500 seats for Medical. My father was in top 25 merit candidate out of those 500 seats in state of andhra pradesh and was accepted into Gandhi Medical College for MBBS. So, his explanination is, Medicine studies are not dry at all, its so interesting that you will never be bored...its like a suspense movie, you would want to go on and on and are never satisfied. You learn new things every single day of your life. He tells me and my brother so many awesome stuff and we are truly amazed. Well so back to you, if you could provide me the details that i've asked, i'll appreciate it tons man...!!!

There is nothing brilliant in what i am sayin' here, man. I have been through medschool pathway before, just helping you to read better and easy.
Always start anatomy with embryology and know abt organogenesis. Know why congenital deformities ( like cleft palate, spina bifida, polydactly etc) happens in human beings. Know normal anatomy and also about abnormal anatomy.

Physiology is another sexy subject. I realized this only after completing my medschool which was then too late to go back and read it again. If anatomy is hardware, physiology is software. The best way to read medicine is read it RIGHT from the beginning. During my 1st year i was always lil bit scared abt physiology because of those formulas, equations and coefficient factors excetras. Moreover, this ganong book of physiology was not very reader friendly that time. Guytons physiology is awesome book. I loved it.

Physiology is not only studying about those serious stuff like Lung volumes Inspiratory volume, Expiratory volumes, Glomerular filtration rates, Cardiac ejection fraction ratios excetras. There is more fun stuff in physiology like learning about why some people walk during sleeping, narcolepsy, why some dream more in the night time than others, (CNN sanjay gupta presented 2 hour TV session on sleep recently) why some folks drop heart beats when seeing a hot chick, mysteries of constipation and diarrhoea, why do you get groin swelling on seeing a playboy bunny? why our granddads pee several times during night time, why women get PMS, long term memory ( i still remember my 1st grade silly romance), short term memory, knowing abt libido, excetras. This is just tip of an iceberg. but, no physiology can explain abt this falling in love mechanism.

So you did your MBBS in india?? And as i asked you, what type of physician/speciality are you in??...The last paragraph is truly kickass...Was it hard for your during your Residency??

And yes, i've heard of many people who have suicide due to excessive ragging by fellow classmates.

Here is a little something for first year students or those wishing to enter.
Hope this helps.

Dont ask me but somehow I received your message about Medical School. I am
just starting my 3rd year clerkships as a medical student at LSU in New
Orleans, LA. There are a few things I would like to tell you before you start
medical school....and, of course, these are only my opinions and may not
represent the opinions of anyone else in this entire world....so take it with
a grain of salt.

01 - Everyone, including my doctor, told me to get the hell out of medicine
before I got in.
02 - I busted my ass in high school, college, etc...to get to med school.
03 - Once in medical school, what you did to get you there no longer matters.
04 - Be prepared to study....then study somemore, and then a little more...
and then be prepared to not do well on the test.
05 - Be prepared to accept the reality that you may be an idiot (this came
as a shock to me).
06 - Be thankful that everyone else in your class is also an idiot and no
one expects you to know everything all at once, and for every test.
07 - Realize that getting ahead in med school means making lots of
friends ... those who step on toes to get to the top are quickly
shunned by the rest of the class. This is very bad since people
tend to get a hold of old tests, helpful hints, book
recommendations, etc..that will be of great benefit to you. If you
are the smartest person in the class...dont try to show off and be
cocky. There will be plenty of opportunities for people to
undermine you if they decide they dont like your attitude. In
short, have fun, be nice....make sure you are likable to a large
number of people.
08 - No one can go through medical school 8 times, so dont be such a "pal"
that you end up doing extra work (typing a review sheet, for
example) for your friends while they are out having a good time.
09 - For me, the first year was NOT the hardest. This is b/c I was used
to busting my ass to get into medical school that I never slowed
down. For some, it is the "wake up call" if you never studied in
college.
10 - The second year IS the hardest, its survival of the fittest. They
want you to know everything about everything, and some more in
between. People quit after every exam.
11 - Once thru your second year, the rest is cheesecake. You dress like
a doctor, work like a doctor, and hopefully start acting like a
doctor.
12 - Once thru your second year, you realize the first 2 were bull**** and
you know nothing and can't remember the rest.
13 - Its relatively easy to PASS medical school, it requires more
dedication than genius to get a High Pass, and a mixture of both to
Honor.
14 - Remember that P=MD (meaning that if you PASS you will become a
doctor). Also, remember that P is not equal to ENT, SURGERY,
OBGYN, DERMATOLOGY, etc...so basically, everyone who graduates is a
doctor, but not everyone who graduates is the doctor they may want
to be.
15 - In the middle of the second year, they could not pay you enough to
be a doctor.
16 - In the middle of the second year, you cant afford to quit b/c you now
have a huge loan to pay back.
17 - The best years of your life are while you are in medical school.
18 - The worst years of your life are while you are in medical school.
19 - Dating in medical school is close to impossible. If you can find
someone who understands your language, your schedule, your attitude,
your financial situation...marry them first, ask questions later.
20 - Sleeping/eating right become luxuries in medical school.
21 - Noone will ever understand your schedule or what the hell you are
doing (eg why you have to study 2 weeks before a test).
22 - You will have to study 2 weeks for a test.
23 - You will have to learn to budget your time wisely if you want to ever
have a life. Same goes for your money.
24 - Some people go out every night and do exceptionally well in medical
school...if this is you...great. If this is not you...Sorry.
25 - Some people bust their ass every day and fail medical school...hope this
is not you.
26 - The person who finds the best balance between study, social, family,
friends, entertainment will make the best of medical school.
27 - The ass who always aces every test and never studies is everyone in
medical school BUT you.
28 - The fact that you can dissect a rat in college has no bearing on your
performance in medical school.
29 - The fact that your favorite class in college is Biology is unique
b/c the smartest people in medical school today are NOT biology
majors and, in fact, have never taken such a class.
30 - The fact that you have taken such classes will help in the first year,
and give you more time for other things while your classmates are
"learning how to use the microscope".
31 - If a histology class is offered at your school, take it..take it
again...teach it...learn to love it. You can essentially SKIP your
medical school histology class if you know it well enough.
32 - You may have thought that all the BULL**** classes you took in high
school/college would come to an end when you got to medical
school ... sorry...they are still there.
33 - You wont believe the amount of information they want you to know.
34 - You wont believe the amount of information you can forget.
35 - Old tests can save your ass...they can also sink you if you just
memorize answers.
36 - You will have to rearrange your life, study habits, friendships
around being a student. No one will understand that you need to
study so much, for so long. I study at least 10 hours a day, every
day. I usually take a day off. Some people dont..thats just me.
I also am not at the top of my class. You have to find your
balance/grade tradeoff/relationship breaker time periods for
studying.
37 - Drugs are bad, dont do drugs. If you need help staying awake, you are
too tired to study..go to sleep.
38 - Your friends, collegues, will do drugs and make A's. Hopefully, life
will weed them out. Until then, be cool and realize that maybe
making C's is your maximum performance level.
39 - Dont neglect friends/family/pets - they are good for fun/meals/etc.
They can also be a drag (Come out with us, you can study tomorrow).
You need to have a long talk with these people if you do get into
medical school.
40 - To the rest of the world, you are not a doctor until you graduate the
4th year. To your family, you are a doctor two weeks before you
start your first year. If ever asked any medical questions, follow
your answer with a disclaimer (....but I would go to your doctor if
you are worried about it because I don't really know). Be careful
what you say, because people are listening.
41 - Never listen to a previous medical students advice on medical school.
They have been run though the meat grinder and couldnt think of
putting anyone else thru such torture. They tend to leave out the
good stuff like parties, good friends, fun memories, their first
patient contact, someone calling you DOC, getting to wear a white
coat, and knowing what the hell is going on during ER.

In summary, if you are not sure you want to be a doctor...be very sure you want
to be a doctor before you come to medical school. That bull**** about "helping
people" will get you nowhere your first 2 years. We are all in medical school
because we want to "help people" but this alone will not get you an MD. You need
to be dedicated to yourself, your studies, your talents, and your life as a whole
just to get thru the first 2 years. Any outside pressures you have will burst
while you are in school so be prepared to handle that before you get here. We
are not special in any way, we are not geniuses, but, we are willing to work
hard...and that, my friend, is what will make you successful in medical school.

It is cunninghams manual of practical anatomy. not the text book. and yes, it is goldbergs book. WOW...i'm so glad you are already geared up to study anatomy. Hmmmm..so..you want me to talk abt biochem and physiology?. It looks like you are inviting trouble now. Gimme couple of days...i will start writing NYer memoir. seriously. Medical school teachers. Some have passion in teaching. Some teach just for their paychecks. I have seen teachers like doordarshan TV newscasters who have no life while lecturing and teach basic science subjects like reading national news on TV. They do have impact on the future of medical students. Some professors can create great doctors from their students when they become real life role models. Some can really kill a prospective great doctor even in the budding stage. I dont recall any great basic science teachers from my medschool life. but, was lucky enough to have great clinical teachers in general medicine, surgery, orthopedics etc.

I dont blame basic science teachers who loose passion in their teaching business. They dont make as much money as clinical teachers because people who teach anatomy, physiology and biochem live in poverty compared to doctors who practice medicine. There are exceptions in this too.
Do i remember my physiology classes? Yes. There were some interesting characters in physiology department. HOD was wife of a leading plastic surgeon. The other 2 staff were husband and wife team.

Physiology lecture classes are always in the afternoon. between 1.00-2.30 PM. Imagine listening to boring (to death)lectures of some dry subjects like muscle and blood physiology from lecturers like newscasters who read from handwritten notes. It is not only the subject and also the weather would be against us. hot.dry.sultry. I survived those classes surveying the profile of good looking chicks most of the time. but, always concentrated on subjects interested to me like reproductive physiology and spinal cord physiology. retrospectively, i dont think attending the classes of boring basic science lectures is of any use. except for mandatory attendance requirements. I have seen some smart students using that time in reading by themselves in medical library. It is a most effective way to acquire knowledge if you have maturity and interest.

Physiology is a cool subject if you think and read different. later.

Physiology is interesting.
Exciting.
Challenging. sometimes even confusing. If you know how to read, what to read, what not to read and waste your precious time, what stuff to concentrate and log into your brain..it becomes really e-z to learn physiology.

Physiology is really software of medicine when anatomy becomes hardware. Physiology is equally important to people who wannabe internists or medical specialists just like how anatomy is important to wannabe surgical specialists. You will realize very early in medschool what you like the most whether you find pleasure in reading anatomy or physiology. People who love physiology have higher IQ than folks who love anatomy. Naturally people who become cardiologists, neurologists and nephrologists are brilliant than their surgical colleques.

Personally, i think medical curriculum is not structured the way to be easy for medstudents to understand the pathologies happening in the body. You read anatomy, physiology and biochemistry when you are immature, stressfull, and when you have no clue about pathological basis of diseases and diagnostic conditions. How can i give an anaology to understand this? For example...how someone becomes a car doctor? Lemme try this one. A car mechanic starts his career by breaking down the car into parts, learns the art of car mechanism and fixing the car by being an apprentice. He gets his hand dirty and gets hands on experience on everything during his training. But, medical students spend like 18 months to 2 years of learning basic stuffs and forget it when they go to clinical years. I know it helps to pass USMLE step1. I always thought learning physiology and medicine together would be a wonderful idea.

I dont remember applying my physiology knowledge during my clinical years in medschool. but, during medical practice now i realize how important is physiology to understand pathology of disease and diagnose some medical conditions. The main point is physiology is so important. Every bit of physiology you read now in your first year is gonna come a very long way. That is the beauty of going to medschool. Whatever you read in medschool is not a waste of time. It is going to help you to become a finest physician. Doctors who are strong is basic sciences are always superior quality physicians.

How many times have you been to your doctors office in your life so far? Do you remember goin' to clinic with your mom or dad when you were a little kid? I have been very few times and vividly remember those visits. There are only few places always attracted me when i was younger and even now. I always loved the experience of going to medical offices. even as a sick kid. not those dirty government hospitals in india. I always liked those clean white clinic sheets, uniformed nurses, white coat clad docs, fancy medical instruments and well dressed chic medical representatives. The other place was air-conditioned movie theatres. Lately, shopping malls are my third favorite.

Have you ever wondered why nurses count your pulses religiously, record your blood pressures accurately, why they stick that cold thermometer into your mouth unkindly? ( Who knows the feeling of babies when these nurses stick that cold thermometer into anus to check the rectal temperature? Poor babies cant even complaint.) Why those docs ask to open your mouth and explore it with hand light. ask to move your eyes like bharatnatya dancer. check your skin fold consistency with pinch. Why do they check pupils with stinking breath coming closer like kissing? listen carefully to your heartbeats. rhythum.and breathing pattern. sometimes hit your knees so hard with reflex hammer. scratch your feet and tickle. some docs are crazy and ask you to walk in a straight line. sometimes to touch your nose with index finger and then his finger. silly game, doc. I always thought a doctors job is too easy. simple stuffs they do in a fancy office.

There were so many other things in life like lil' secrets. I am not sure you already know the answers. but, i came to know about those stuffs only after entering into medschool and started learning phyziology. I had so many questions about human body when i was a kid and teenager. it was like unsolved puzzles. mystery of life.

Where does the hunger come from? Why some people are so obese and some are so lean? I had a cousin who ate everyday like an elephant but never gained any weight. I always wondered how that several bowls of basmati rice and cups of sambar/curry disppear into his body? Why men fart and women dont? How hiccup happens? Why my uncle snores like a rhinocerus? what is the mechanism of snoring? Why some kids suffer from severe asthma and die young? How come some japanese farmers hit century in age? How come some people are so lucky to have regular bowel habits and go to toilet on time like military protocol? and some are married to toilet bowls? Why you pee differently in hot summer? Too yellow.what is this blood cancer? what is death? why do we have to get back pain when we become old? oh!...my doc said to my mom it is due to degeneration. what the heck is this degeneration? What happens to women in 'those' 3-4 days every single month? Why?

You know what celica. You are gonna learn everything abt the revealation of lil' secrets in phyziology. solving the puzzles of human body. are you not excited?

Yes. It is not just sounding like fun. It is more than fun. Dont get scared.
If you think learning medicine is a chore, it becomes worse than it. It puts lot of stress on you. then, it becomes a job to be done which needs extra energy. Think learning medicine ( anatomy, physiology, biochem or whatever) is like a game. joy. pleasure. a game of learning human body mechanism. How it works like a supercomputer with perfect coordination of hard & software? We learnt physiology in 18 months. First 12 months for general phyisiology and then 6 months for system physiology. Medschool always gets a whole lot better with time. In first year you deal with dead bodies and dry subjects and then you work with live patients and very practical subjects.

For example. take a guy who wants to become a hollywood film director and he joins NYU film institute. He always wanted to become a movie director from his childhood. He did not want to do anything in his life except creating movies. Do you think NYU film institute can set a curriculum for him? Do you think he will limit his interest and acquiring knowledge to the limits of his syllabus? Do you think he is just gonna sit there and pass the test set by the examination board? If he just does that he could definitely become a film director. May be for a national geographic TV serial or some petty commercial film. not a successfull director for a hollywood blockbuster. you must be xtra-ordinary to be special.
samething applies for some one going into catering school. Everyone does not turn into celebrity chefs. Only folks who have ideas, who has guts to experiment to new cuisines turn into great chefs. I think i am circumnavigating too much to drive my point. sorry. that is the way NYer is. He is nutty. BTW..where is my buddy..ILUV2BMD?

I'm going to enter my Senior Year of High School. I'm looking into applying for SRMC. I have a questions, and it would be great if someone could answer the following questions.

* What are teh Pros and Cons of doing Dentistry @ SRMC and coming back here to practice?

* What the the Pros and Cons of doing Physiotherapy, or Psycology @ SRMC and coming back here to Practice?

* It is a lot cheaper to do Physiotherapy or Psycology @ SRMC than to do MBBS or Dentistry right? What is the Amount that needs to be paid to do Physiotherapy or Psycology @ SRMC?

* What is the Duration for these courses?

* Do they still require NRI's to have taken Bio, Chem, and Physics here if we want to do Physiotherapy or Psycology?

It would help my life a great deal if someone could answer these questions! Thanks!

hey i am actually an SRMC student but for MBBS. I would defintely email the college so they can send you appropriate information in regards to your objective. Specifically you can email the Vice Chancellor.. his email should be at the srmc website..

You will have to use both Satyanarayan and Lipincotts.... avoid Harpers tho there are a few diagrams in there that could prove useful (i.e. Glycolysis and IgG). The reason why you will have to use the indian text is because no other american author will list out the facts in point form for you. What you will begin to notice about the grading is they want points with brief explanations... it doesnt matter if you know 2 or 3 points really well and you dont cover all 10 points. Satya will take care of that for you... but defintely utilize Lipincotts for DNA / Porphyrias / less so on vitamins

Physiology:
Honest truth if you want to pass, Sembilingum will be your best friend last minute. It is perfect cause it basically outlines how you should write each short note and essay. I highly recommend using Ganong for topics like BP and cardiac cycle. People say physio you can BS alot on the exams.. but to really fill up those sheets of paper during the exams is by reading proper text and understanding whats going on... once you grasp the basic idea from either Guyton or Ganong... you can use Sembil to organize your essay or short note.

Anat:
Go with Churasia.... Grants is a little overboard... tho Snells is good for a better understanding of applied aspects...

General Advice: the more you put in .. the better off you will be.. case and point.. the less dumb you will feel in second year where they expect you to understand 1st year concepts in and out... so know it well the first time -- and you wont have to worry about passing, it will just come

Dont start abt my socializing skills in medschool, then this thread is gonna endup as SDN version of How NYer got kissed? Got Wild? and Got a life? kinda novel screwing up my life. Already this thread has all indications of becoming another SDN megathread. I dont want jumpman to endup as skirtchaser in his first year medschool. My first year was a mess, man. That is the only reason i am sticking only with academic advice. Dont stimulate me and then some premed from NY city will come and threaten to beat me up in queeens. you have no idea abt NYers history here.

How could some one forget his first day in medschool? That is another memorable day in an individuals memory bank like first kiss, first wedding night, first girl friend and first real job. It is absolutely an important event. To be honest, i wasn't nervous at all. I was so excited to go to school all dressed up with excitement looking forward to see my female classmates.

My medschool is a state school and takes all types of candidates ranging from rich to poor and from upper to lower castes. That is the beauty of india. You see different religion: different caste: different social class: a pure mixture.
My school was brightened up that day with parents of some 200 future doctors wearing 200 megavoltage brightness on their faces with million dollar smiles. happy and proud. Most of the students hailed from below average family from small towns and villages. Remember i am talking abt india here, not new york city. Imagine a farmer coming to medschool for the very first time with his son or daughter who got medschool admission only because of his/her scores. I remember seeing so many parents in that category. Not every medstudent in india has a physican parent like yourself and fortunate.

Medschool in india use to have a ritual called 'ragging' which was an original tradition of seniors get to know the juniors. I am not sure whether ragging still exists in india. I think it is banned now because it has turned ugly and seniors started torturing the juniors in the name of ragging. Ragging can range from fun to torture. I remember performing striptease in front of ladies hostel in my medschool.
First day is always orientation and tour. lots of advise. excetras and you get tired.
Well, so you want to know how many hour study is necessary for a wanna be cardiothoracic surgeon? Remember if you become a CT surgeon there is a very high chance of you getting stuck in the operating room for marathon hours every single day. I know one guy who is a chief in CT surgery at US university hospital. He won every single prize awarded by the medschool on every single subject. He spent every awaken hour with books in his closed room of mens hostel. The only time he was away from books was during his bedtime. atleast that was the rumor.

newyorker...awsome ur done with med school! excellent responses in this thread. lol to the skirt chaser comment. yah i just finished my first year at MSRMC in bangalore...back in the states till results come out. my first year was a roller coaster...lot of ups and some downs...I got a rep as a skirt chaser too...but it was totally unwarented, lol. HAHAH..striptease. Man i would have done that..well if i had a 6 pack. Ragging wasnt too bad for me, but hostelites got it much worse. Anyways the girls in my class werent that great and werent worth it anyways...juniors on the other hand...not that good looking...but really cool people. thing is my dad had arranged for outside help during 1st year..so it wasnt as hard as it could have been..but finals was still freakin crazy...biochem was a disaster again in RGUHS...so from what ive heard about paper corrections...that most everyone is passing...and viva marks were liberal. as for books, good choices by vik..but i never read shembu cause all my teachers told me to stay away from it. Mahapatra was my enternal physio companion. Chau is good for anat....and satyanarayan is the best for biochem...in my opinion. For biochem, they dont ask you to draw the spatial arrangements in exams, so i dont really think harpers is neccessary, but i did have lippincotts on hand.

Especially the failing because of having a girl/boyfriend, I am living proof of that, lost 3 years because of it(wouldnt drop my BF, just because SRMC was failing me, I am stubborn that way).
And one more thing from a womans point of veiw,---They will fail you because you report that a proffessor made sexual advances on you. Thats right, one not to be name ass. prof in Ped, made some sexual comments and such during my ped final assessment, and I complained, and low and behold, I was failed in Ped.
Also, if you really want to get thru, all you need is $$$, just pay of the management, and someone will fail in your place, happened to me in First year. Or pay off the external or the HOD of the department, and its smooth sailing folks.
And as for the Harvard thing, only certain Indian students, from certain states in India get that chance of even going to Harvard for a research. Certain proffessors control that, and when NRI(american) students ask to be given an chance to go, he says NO, because local students need more help than americans because we are spoiled brats, who have everything given to them.
SRMC is all about the MONEY. Anyone who tells you different, will be lieing. Its also all about Favoritism, prejudice, and sexism. Not Medicine, you will never learn anything in college. You have to teach yourself, and pray that someday, you get out of the prison called SRMC.
And girls, planning on going to SRMC, dont worry,their are hundreds of guys just waiting to spread filthy rumors about you, just because your from America. And dont plan on having great friends, the hostel politics, and bitchiness makes it impossible. Dont forget, everyone is looking out for themselves. As far as the girls with TV in their rooms, I heard that, they aren't allowing that anymore.
All in all, Hell on Earth, should be the School slogan, because unless, you have connections, money, and are Tamil, you will never finish on time, and you will never learn anything.

wow.......I have some cousins (girls) who are considering SRMC as a potential choice but after reading this post, this whole thread actually, I think the best idea would be to go to Madras and spend a month there, talk to the ppl, actually see how things are run..........and THEN decide if its worth it.

Thank you so much, for your sympathy!! It means alot, especially since the taint of SRMC still haunts me now(ie. relearning everything again for the STEPs, and having horrible time explaining my YEARS of failure when applying for residencies. Not to mention, the emotional trama, as well as the proffesional trama, like I said, it has almost ruined my life.
Normally, I would say that is a good idea, but with SRMC, they are VERY GOOD at hiding things, and putting a good face on the college. So, spending a month there, may not reveal so much. When I joined they said all sorts of things to get my money(from visas, to private gym, swimming pools, and catered food, and an AC hostel/ and lecture halls-which ironically they did finally get when I left) . And once I paid my $100,000, they didnt give a crap about coming thru about anything.
But ultimately, spending a month may be all that you can do it even get an idea. But please remember take every thing they say with a GIANT GRAIN of SALT!! They lie very convincingly!! GOOD LUCK!!

thank u docsri for showing all the nay sayers that i was speaking the truth, not exaggerating. I'm very sorry about your unfortunate experience in peds. if its any consolation, that professor was fired a couple years back.

its the same in srmc, in terms of a majority of the material has to be covered by the student. But that was in my time. Almost all the professors have changed since my departure. Also i'm talking about mbbs. I'm not sure how things are in bds. In india grading system, there are no things such as credits or GPA. You have your final exam (university exams). Which in order to pass you must score over 50%. if you fail, you will lose six months in some cases because you can't progress to next part of course or you may carry the subject (meaning you will progress to the next part of the course, but six months later you will have to re-write the exam for the subject you failed concurrently to taking the course)
