Hey Everyone,

Didn't see a retina fellowship thread for the 2017 application season. With a month until the wheels start turning, I thought I'd start the thread here! I've included information that I have found about various programs (Google, word of mouth, etc). Hope it's all accurate and up-to-speed! If not, add your info below. Once the application opens, you could extract the info of each program to a spread sheet on excel. It requires a little patience on your part, but it will save you a lot of time.

some advice, for what it's worth. it's more useful to post the program when they actually offer an interview (along with method of communication and all that) so folks can see when it's offered so they know if they were given a first round pick or not. may change things when it comes to having to decide between conflicting schedules, etc.

I am a current first year fellow at Cook County/Retina Associates in Chicago. This is a two year, highly surgical oriented fellowship and offers a great mix between private practice and the public sector. One fellow is taken every two years.

You can easily expect over 500-600 vits and 50 buckles as primary surgeon and exposure to ~900-1000 surgical cases in two years.

Don't know about NYC, but for Chicago:
Excellent - UIC
Good - Northwestern, Rush
OK - University of Chicago
Be cautious, could be good but who knows - all of the pretty new, small private practice fellowships
 
Just submitted my application. 49 programs cost me a lot more than I thought it would. Here we go again :) Good luck people.

I'm sure you'll do fine, Dr. Zeke! Yea the application process dented the budget a bit. From what I've heard, it costs around $600-700 for every interview you attend (flight, hotel, expenses, etc). It'd be humbling to get a lot of interviews but at the same time bad for my savings ;)
 
Just remember that despite the costs, this is a investment in your future that will pay off handsomely in the end. I spent roughly 5-6k on interviews, including driving and flights. The interview process is thankfully much more relaxed and just in general better than residency interviews. I actually had a lot of fun on interviews because you get to meet a lot of applicants that you'll see frequently at future meetings and training seminars.
