Hey everyone, I have a few questions about Surgical Oncology. SO fell free to leave answers or comments. Any info would be helpful.

1) How long does the surg onc fellowship last?
2) Would you consider surg onc to be a comptitive fellowship?
3) How many hours do you normally work on an average week(I know this can vary)?

Sorry for all the questions but I am only a 3rd year med student.

Thanks:)

Hey everyone, I have a few questions about Surgical Oncology. SO fell free to leave answers or comments. Any info would be helpful.

1) How long does the surg onc fellowship last?

A minimum of two years is required by the SSO; many programs are 3 years in length.

2) Would you consider surg onc to be a comptitive fellowship?

Yes, moderately so. Less than PRS or Peds, more than Trauma, Transplant, etc.

3) How many hours do you normally work on an average week(I know this can vary)?

Varies widely. But most surg onc cases are elective so there aren't a lot of middle of night ER hits. But if you do the big cases, which may require ICU time, you can expect some middle of the night phone calls about your patients.
