Research for orthodontic residency

Hi! I am wanting to pursue an orthodontic residency after dental school. I know that to be competitive for an orthodontic residency position, I should do research. If I do research that is not dental related, but instead more medical related, is that still ok? Will I still be a competitive applicant by doing research related to adipose tissue/diabetes? Or do orthodontic residency programs want to see dental related research.
