I'm not sure if this is serious or not but in case a med student stumbles on this thread - psychoanalytic theory is a theory and psychoanalysis is a practice. 'Psychoanalytic theory' is a specific term and will always denote the body of literature and tradition related to psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis is distinct from psychoanalytic theory in denoting the actual process but the term can also be used to describe the field more broadly. Just like you can have a "theory of cardiology" and cardiology.

Psychoanalytic theory is taught in pretty much every literature or humanities dept in the country. Lacanian analytic theory is a staple of any film studies student. Psychoanalytic theory is often combined with critical theory, feminism, Marxism, (post-)structuralism, postcolonial thoery etc in textual, cinematic and other cultural critiques.

Psychoanalysis is a specific technique characterized by multiple weekly sessions, and a focus upon transference. Free association and the use of the couch are variable.

Psychoanalytic theory, refers to a diverse set of theories which postulate different etiologies of pathology and different structures of the mind. These theories can include: classical Freudian, neo-Freudian, ego psychology, self psychology, Lacanian, interpersonal psychology, object relations, relational psychoanalysis, etc. All have different ideas and foci.

This is still taught in psychoanalytic institutes across the nation. 2-4 years of extra training.
