Started at my new practice couple months ago and one of our satellites is a major 1 hour plus trek each way. Anyone know of any good ophthalmology-related podcasts out there?

Googling found these:
New Retina Radio https://eyetube.net/podcasts/new-retina-radio/episode.asp?id=1
Retina Podcast http://www.retinapodcast.com/episodes/
As Seen From Here http://www.asseenfromhere.com/

But have not personally listened to any of them. Any recommendations?

Ophthalmology innovation summit (ois) podcast is good if you like the investor side of eye stocks. Dr. Neil Bressler out wilmer has a series called "Eophthalmology review" which i enjoyed reviewing dme and pdr studies and trials with other figures in retina. As seen from here is great, Dr. Young goes and visits all the major meetings and talks about new tech and studies.
"Ophthalmology off the grid" is another great podcast also reviewing new tech and surgical approaches in refractive and cataract surgery.

Thanks! I will check out these on my drive tomorrow.

Did my 2 hour round trip trek today and went through the ones in my original post:

As Seen From Here
Pros: Very polished, interesting speaker, has a ton of episodes going back so could take months just to catch up to today, ASCRS approved
Cons: Not all relevant to my subspecialty (retina), I tended to tune out or drift away the most with this one

New Retina Radio
Pro: Clean audio editing, interesting topic with multiple speakers, easy to follow, reminded me of an NPR 20 minute news segment
Cons: short 20 minute episode, only 1 episode so far so literally nothing more to listen to for now

Retina Podcast
Pros: It's like a rogue radio show someone created in their basement. It's casual, very easy to listen to, and covers topics most people don't talk about (the episode I listened to discussed surgical coding for retina which is certainly a niche interest). The host seems enthusiastic and looking at the episode list in the iTunes Podcasts section there are new episodes every few days with decent lengths (35-50 minutes).

Cons: It's like a rogue radio show someone created in their basement. The audio editing is passable and overall did not distract too much, but it certainly is not as professionally edited as the 2 above. To be fair it's a solo non-profit effort, which is admirable, so hopefully they can improve it going forward because I liked what I heard so far.

Thanks for the kind review of our retina podcast! We are a little rough around the edges, but the audio quality recently took a step up and we have gotten great feedback from residents, fellows, and practicing docs.

It had been years since I had been on SDN, so thanks to my residency applicant friends for giving me the heads up. This is a great thread also to keep track of all of the resources out there. I was not aware of some of them.

Jay,

I love your podcast. Lots of great topics for young future academicians and retina specialists. Even if you're not interested in pursuing retina, I find there are some pearls for everyone.

Thanks for putting this together!

Great job, kudos for putting this together on your own. I still like the clean audio of the other podcasts a bit more, but you guys post more often which is nice to keep mentally stimulated during these drives. I liked the recent fellowship match one and the surgical coding episode was clutch. Are you still planning to keep posting 2x/week long-term?

The feedback is very much appreciated! I am glad you liked the surgical coding episode; we will have a similar in-office medical retina coding one soon.

2x/week will likely become untenable long-term due to clinical obligations but for now will be at least once a week with an average of 6 episodes/month. The most recent was just posted today!

Anyone know of glaucoma podcasts? There are several residents in my program interested in glaucoma and I think they would appreciate this during commutes.

Just to bump this thread, Off The Grid was a fantastic recommendation. This episode: https://eyetube.net/podcasts/ophthalmology-off-the-grid/episode.asp?id=11 was very nice as a private practice retina doc.

New Retina Radio posted their second episode, which was similar to the first in content, and now just this week the third episode, which again was super interesting to hear about picking partners for a practice (https://eyetube.net/podcasts/new-retina-radio/episode.asp?id=3). It seems like they are looking like a qmonthly production.

Retina Podcast remains solid, although the topics do vary all over the place. I like the coding and clinical ones best. They just put up a residency match panel episode today which is probably very interesting to some people on this forum but as a retina specialist really wasn't of much interest to me, but I guess cannot complain too much when they provide free content.

Thanks for listening! While we are a retina podcast we do like to incorporate aspects of medical education, mentorship, physician finance, and other topics that appeal to different groups. The residency match Q and A has been our most popular episode thus far and overall well-received. I encourage anyone applying in the future to check it out.

There is one called Talking About Glaucoma (TAG), but the recording quality and production has been so poor that it's difficult to concentrate on it at times.

Yes, Ophthalmology Off The Grid is consistently one of my favorite programs out there.

Just putting in another good word for Off the Grid and Retina Podcast. The latter just did an insightful interview with Julia Haller on the Melgen legal case in Florida. I wonder if either will address the USC dean controversy?

Amazing job! My inspiration for the Retina Podcast; would not have pursued this without your podcast being the trailblazer!

For anyone in ophthalmology who enjoys podcasts on the subject (or not) we would really appreciate 2 mins of your time to help us with a survey!:

I'm a first year medical student and big fan of Ophthalmology Off the Grid. Glad to people actually in the field like it too!

Agreed. Ambitious project and really good execution overall.

There's a fair number of podcasts available on the ASCRS website (can just google "ASCRS podcasts"), a number of which deal with glaucoma and many other topics. Requires membership/login, however membership is free while a resident.
