Why is it necessary to have completed a GPR or AEGD in order to apply?

I assume because they're paying you a PGY-2 salary.

And weeds out applicants.
Dude I can't imagine going to dental school for 4 years, then a GPR, then an internship, then a 6Y program. But for those willing to do it, it shows they are serious and they really want it.
Wow. My wife would kill me.

What about gpr, internship, and then 4 year program?
No. I have no interest in becoming an oral surgeon.
I have nothing but respect for oral surgeons. Their training and hard work is remarkable, as well as what they are capable of.

University of Missouri, Kansas City

We have 3 categorical and 4 noncategorical interns every year. Noncategorical interns are responsible for rounding, working in the outpatient clinic (postop, extractions, consults), managing inpatients, and taking call (the current noncategoricals have 7-8 calls/month as of now). Academically we have one (2 hour) journal club per month, one (2 hour) lecture per week, one clinical pathology clinic per month along with some events such as implant club and Greater Kansas City OMS meetings sprinkled in randomly. Surgeries are mostly trauma such as ORIF with some pathology, orthognathics, I&D, TMJ, and extractions under GA. We do not do any cancer. When on call, the intern will 100% be going to the OR with the attending and chief resident.

Internship opportunity for July 1, 2017-June 30, 2018:

The University of Mississippi offers two OMFS non-categorical internship positions. These one year positions are designed for the candidates that are genuinely interested in pursuing an OMFS residency and would like to experience a full scope OMFS residency.

Duties will include: clinic coverage, on call coverage, ER, OR and inpatient management of OMFS patients. Interns will also attend all didactic departmental conferences. Identical responsibilities to a first-year resident. We treat our interns no different from our categorical residents - interns will have the opportunity to scrub and participate in OR cases as well as clinic sedations. We cover the main University Hospital and Batson Children's Hospital which are located on the same campus as the School of Dentistry where our offices and clinics are located. Convenient garage parking is included.

University of MS OMS program is a broad scope program that involves large amounts of dentoalveolar, implants, trauma, orthognathic and benign pathology. We split trauma call every third week with plastic surgery and ENT.

Jackson, MS is great place to live as cost of living is very cheap and the food here is hard to beat! The historic Fondren district is within walking distance of the University Medical Center and is the predominant bar and restaurant scene in Jackson. Check out http://www.finditinfondren.com/.

All of our past interns were successful in matching with OMFS programs immediately following completion of the internship. Successful candidates will be bright, self-motivated and eager to become part of a dynamic OMFS team. Salaries start at the PGY-1 level.

If you have applied to our residency program, we can simply activate your existing application for consideration immediately following the match. If you have not previously applied to our program, please email your CV and any available academic information (transcripts etc.). Interested parties should contact one of our upcoming chief residents, Frazier Williams at [email protected].

Most interns are more proactive on seeking out those positions. Programs will often not even post here unless they're having trouble filling a spot.

Do you know where usually they post any available position?

Parkland Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Internship (2017-2018)
We are currently looking for a qualified individual to fill this position for 2017/18

With the upcoming CBSE in July, we will accept candidates without a CBSE score and can accommodate time off in July for you to prepare for this exam. We have a vested interest in your success.

Each year, the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery needs additional help in our clinical rotation. We accept individuals for a one-year commitment from a pool of individuals who do not match or are interested in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) but who have not yet applied to an OMS training program. Individuals selected for the clinical positions function as first-year residents and recent interns have found success (100%) in matching into an OMFS program the following year. They are paid the same stipend as a first-year resident and function as a first year resident with time spent between our busy operating rooms and clinic.

For those interested, please download, complete, and send the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Externship/Internship Application with your National Board Scores, CV, letter(s) of recommendation, and National Board of Medical Examinees Comprehensive Basic Science Examination to Thomas Schlieve DDS, MD and/or Anita Olmedo.

MetroHealth Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department is interviewing for two non-categorical intern spots for the 2018-2019 academic year (beginning July 1, 2018). Metro is located on the west side of Cleveland and is a long-standing level 1 trauma center. We are now affiliated with the Case Western Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program, with residents rotating through our department. Currently there are two full time attendings and one part time attending. We cover the full scope of OMFS including dentoalveolar, trauma, orthognathics, and benign pathology. There is an emphasis on dentoalveolar and trauma at the intern level.

Responsibilities and experiences will include:

  1. Covering roughly q3 call including primary trauma call (OMFS covers every third week of facial trauma call)

  2. Managing clinic and assisting with sedations (currently three days of IV sedations per week)

  3. Rotating through our outpatient surgery centers for dentoalveolar and less complex maxillofacial procedures. Interns can expect one on one time with an attending for a portion of these cases.

  4. Opportunity to assist in the OR for trauma and other major cases (one main OR day per week)

  5. Opportunity to attend conferences and lectures at Case in conjunction with the residency program

  6. Managing inpatients and consults with the Case residents

This program is an excellent opportunity for applicants interested in bolstering their resume for categorical positions while also developing surgical skills and exposure to facial trauma. While our service is busy, there is an understanding that studying for the CBSE is a critical aspect of the application process. Those interested should also consider the cost of living in Cleveland is very reasonable relative to comparable internships.

Please e-mail our division chairman Dr. Alan Martinez at [email protected] with your resume if interested in one of the positions. No decisions will be made until after the match this winter. Interns must obtain an Ohio dental license prior to starting in our department.

The Beth Israel Medical Center/Jacobi Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program annually offers OMFS internship positions. These one year positions are designed for the candidates that are genuinely interested in pursuing an OMFS residency and would like to experience a full scope OMFS residency. Dang! Wish this was around when I applied. Lucky person for whoever lands this spot.

I just wanted to give some brief info about an OMFS Internship at John Peter Smith (JPS) Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas.

Our upper level residents are 5th and 6th year UT Southwestern/Parkland OMFS Residents. They run the service here at JPS which is a Level 1 Trauma Center. This program is extremely busy with trauma. You will see everything. Interns take primary call and upper level residents are readily available when needed. As an intern you will take in house call q5 days. You will be very busy and get a ton of experience. There is no ENT or plastics on call at this hospital. You will get a very broad scope.

During the day the interns will run the oral surgery clinic. You will be extremely busy with dentoalveolar surgery, extracting teeth including full mouth extractions, single extractions and third molars, all performed under local anesthesia. Upper levels will run sedations and do a majority of impacted third molars, but interns still get their fair share of experience. You will be in charge of managing complications and medically complex patients. Upper levels and staff are available as needed. Interns have opportunity to go to the OR for trauma and occasionally total joints and orthognathics. Interns also help the cancer fellows in their clinic and in the OR with big cases. Once a week there is a half day of TMJ/myofascial pain clinic. This is a great learning opportunity and you get to work closely with great faculty.

Faculty are all very supportive, patient and eager to teach. This is not a malignant program. Faculty often hold lectures each week. Dr. Stella is the program director and makes it a top priority to help you reach your goals. He will go out of his way to get you into a program. If you are willing to work your hardest and do what he says, he will do all in his power to get you in somewhere. There is no OMFS program at JPS to roll into, but this past year 2 of the interns interviewed at UT Southwestern. All 4 interns who applied matched into a program somewhere in the country. They will be well prepared for their next program.

The upper levels (Parkland residents) often tell us that this internship at JPS is the most difficult and rigorous program in the country. They also tell us that we will get more experience and training than anywhere else. After speaking with interns at other programs I agree with this.

I personally did not apply this year due to family circumstances. When communicating this with Dr. Stella he was very understanding and supportive of me. He expects all interns to work hard all year and do what he asks of you. As you do this he will help you reach your goals. I made it a goal to obtain an IV sedation (moderate sedation) permit for the state I would be practicing in. I researched the requirements and mapped out how I would reach my goal. I presented it to Dr. Stella and he was supportive of it. He made it possible for me to exceed the requirements. All of this was in addition to my normal duty hours at JPS. I am impressed with the care the faculty have for the interns.

Overall this year was a beat down. This is not a program to come just so you can learn to take out teeth. You need to love OMFS, love learning, be teachable and be willing to work harder than you have ever worked. Know that you will not have much free time and you will not see family much, but you will get a broad scope of experience and improve your chances of matching into a program. Overall the internship was a great experience and I am grateful for the opportunity.

If you are interested in applying for the program, you may go to their website. Just Google "JPS oral surgery internship". They have a very informative website.

Good luck.
