Yep, you have to pay your share. Same thing for cell phones if you're on a family plan. I believe car insurance as well, but I'm not 100% sure on that one. My car is in my name so I pay everything for it myself.

thats what i figured. my mom tried to argue with me the other night because she didnt think it was true and im proving a point here. lol Thanks

My fafsa has not gone through on my buckeye link . I contacted fin aid and kelsey conklin said they are having issues connecting my stuff because i have an account ith osu for undergrad as well (weird bc i never went to osu before, i never even applied for undergrad). SO, if you guys are having issues I would contact her because she said she wouldnt have noticed if I didnt contact her, on her end it just looks like i havent filed a fafsa yet.

Thought that I would share for those of you who are working on budgets...

If you need health insurance or a parking pass, those are expenses that were not factored into creating the COA. Remember to make room in your budgets if you need them.

If health insurance would put you over your COA though, you can appeal to get more loans to cover it since the school requires that you be insured.

Do you get the health insurance though Ohio state ? Are they reasonably priced or should I start looking else where?

Their student health insurance is roughly $3750/year.

I will be. It's not as "cheap" as what I have now through my employer, but it is comprehensive (dental and vision are included) and definitely cheaper than a comparative plan I would find shopping the marketplace alone. It also covers a student for the whole year if you pay both semesters (Spring semester includes summer).

I've heard from some students before that if you are managing expensive medical conditions, it's not the best because you'll max out the spending very quickly on medications or specialists visits.

Does anybody know when parking passes go on sale for the fall?

Posting this in case someone else is in a similar situation: I was planning on staying on my parents health insurance since I won't turn 26 until after vet school. With gaining residency, you are supposed to reimburse your parent for your costs if you decide to stay on it. I was talking to my dad about it and he was basically saying that since his insurance is from his employer, it doesn't cost him anything extra if I'm on it or not (so there really aren't any costs to pass on to me). I called the residency office and they said that is totally fine, I just need documentation from the company supporting that:)

I think I may have read earlier in this thread that for those of us trying to establish residency, we cannot use any money that wasn't taxed in Ohio?

Can anyone reaffirm that?

Correct. For you it would be any money earned between Aug 2016 to Aug 2017 that was not taxed in Ohio. Prior to Aug 2016, you can use it. Just look to see what was in your account then and that is the money you are allowed to use.

But if it WAS taxed in Ohio, it all fair game?

I would call and double check, because I was given a very vague answer on whether or not I could use that money unfortunately.
my current job (and the job I'll have through the summer)is based in Ohio, which is making me wonder...

I got a pretty decent tax return so it definitely will fall in that period of money I can't use (unless it's different since it's the tax returns from the year prior?) Lol. I figure I'll just use it to spend wisely on necessities now to minimize the initial spending of my loan money.

So was my job all last year, but I lived in KY, which made them hesitant with saying I could use it

You should be able to use any money you get from a tax return. You worked for that money and you would have evidence of that.

My understanding is that what they're looking for when they ask for bank statements from a year prior is evidence of parents meddling in your personal finances, padding your bank account with lots of funds prior to entering school. If it's money you worked for, you're already demonstrating financial independence and as long as you can turn over records proving that you earned that money, it shouldn't be a problem.

I guess the best way to go is to call the residency office and ask for the exact details. My dad has given me like $1000 over the last few months to help offset some of my travel expenses from all my interviews In dec and Jan (which with applications and travel fees was well over $4500) but nothing exorbitant. I suppose it doesn't hurt to call and ask to confirm, though.

Just declined my offer, hopefully one of you hear back from them soon. Good luck!

If you guys have a question for the residency office, I would suggest emailing them. That way you have a paper trail with their answer. If you ask 3 different people the same question you may get 5 different answers...

Really good idea. I made sure the one time I called to write down the guys name...

If anyone declines their seat, can you let us know and whether you are IS or OOS. Patiently but not patiently waiting for April 15th to come to hopefully receive a call.

Would OOS people mind posting if they've denied their acceptance? I'd really appreciate it. Sincerely, OOS waitlisted student

Not to bum out people waitlisted but keep in mind that someone declining their acceptance is not a guarantee that a person will come off the waitlist. Remember that OSU over accepts their class by a huge margin. The waitlists will only move when less than 162 people have accepted their seats on or after April 15th.

Okay, thanks for the heads up. How do you know they overaccept every year? And do you know how many they tend to overaccept? If they do that, then what's the point of a wait list?

I understand that but I am still trying to be optimistic as Ohio State is where I really want to go, and would give a deposit up at any other school. Do we know if they overaccept IS students or is it just OOS? I kind of have to agree with vlama on the fact that I don't think there is a point in having a waitlist if they overaccept so many students.

The only thing I can think of is it's like a plan c for them like in case too many people decline their acceptance, then they can admit from the wait list. It would just be helpful to know how many they over accept and how many students have sent in their deposits already

I agree that it would be helpful too know. I do believe that it is different from year to year though, so I am not sure if there is a specific set number of how many they overaccept or send offers to.

Right I'm sure you're right but maybe they could tell us what the numbers are for this year.. I'll let you know if I find out by some miracle.

I wish they would! It maybe would give me some hope deciding on what to do next. I'm debating on putting down a deposit for another school, but the thing is I really don't want to go to that school. So I guess I have some decisions to make on whether or not I should wait another year and apply another round or what. Let me know if you find anything out! Thank you!

I'm in the exact same situation, will do

@vlama @mary.swiger

Many vet schools over-accept their class each year. This doesn't mean they wont use the waitlist. With the exception of last year (where far more accepted students chose to come to OSU than expected), a good chunk of the waitlist is usually called. As far as numbers, I was told for my year (c/o 2017) that they accepted about 280 people for 162 seats. I know that seems like a lot but it's based on how many people have turned down their acceptances in past years to attend other schools. I imagine after what happened last year that this number is lower now so perhaps more of the waitlist will be called (but its really impossible to predict).

Most of the extra seats are likely OOS students - It makes sense for the school to do this. Top OOS students will likely get accepted to multiple schools and have to make a choice. If they are given an acceptance to Ohio State now rather than getting called off the waitlist later, they are more likely to come here. Plus, if they accepted 162, they'd have to make 120+ phone calls over the summer to call people off the waitlist - many of whom have already committed to another school which leads to more phone calls...and so on.

Even though that sounds overwhelming, it doesn't mean you won't get called. It really depends on who applied this year and anything can happen. It'd be almost impossible to try to track down all 100+ people declining their OSU seat so I wouldn't bother counting people on here. It's highly unlikely you'll hear anything until after the April 15th deadline. Also, don't count out OSU until school has started. The waitlist may move more as people who put a deposit down at OSU are called off the waitlist at other schools. Best of luck to you guys. :luck:

Most schools with the exception of Davis over accept given that they expect plenty to choose a cheaper/IS option. They sent us an email (financial or something related, can't remember exactly what) and you could see everyone who it was sent to. I counted the individual recipients and it was well over 200.

Do we know if they overaccept IS students or is it just OOS?

Traditionally, they have initially under accepted IS students. If OSU has done that again this year, which is very likely, and there are seats to fill after April 15th, the IS waitlist will move first until OSU reaches whatever quota they want this year. A few years ago they initially accepted around 65 IS students and the class was eventually seated with around 80 IS students. So 15+ people came off the IS waitlist that year.

If you're high on the IS waitlist, your chances are very good if things progress somewhat normally.

Thank you for your response! I am #2 on the IS waitlist- and am really hoping I get in. Trying to be optimistic.

What's your number on the waitlist, if you don't mind saying?

Number 7, why?
Thanks! Just trying to keep track of when the waitlist moves, if it moves, since they don't send out emails when they take people off of it. I'm #9, so then if you hear anything I'll know it's close to me. I think someone else following the thread posted that they were 5th a couple pages back so you can keep track if it's getting close to you too!

So I know I'm getting very far ahead of myself but are there a good amount of residencies in Ohio or should I plan on having to move again. Just wondering how confortable I should get in Ohio and Columbus.

What types of residencies are you looking for? Also, most residencies go through a "match" process. You have some say in ranking programs you're interested in, but programs also rank you. Depending on how both rank lists align, you could end up at any place on your list. And where you match is where you go.

I'm sure many people change there minds but i find myself leaning towards emergency medicine or conservation (zoo) medicine. I have been looking online and I only saw maybe 3 zoo positions and 1 emergency medicine one. Wasn't sure if I wasn't looking in the right places or if that was truly all there really was In Ohio.

Must be a vet student thing to worry about all this stuff 4 years in advance haha
