That makes sense. I will definitely keep that in mind when my time comes. Congrats on matching!I just matched gen surg. It is definitely possible to try for a categorical gen surg spot and be forced into a prelim spot (from the match or SOAP).
The trick is to be realistic with yourself based on your stats and the info from NRMP Charting Outcomes. Example: Yeah I also love plastics, maybe even as a future career, but there is no way I had the numbers to apply for integrated plastics. Good thing I love gen surg so much!
Einstein match is always a reason showing that ranking isn't everything. Their IM matches are always crazy strong. This year no different with most matches across the board
I'm honestly surprised UWash doesn't match to more highly ranked programs. At other schools at this level it seems as though students need to try to fall below a top 20 academic center, even when applying out of their league specialty-wise. I figured the name would pull about the same weight as NYU, Cornell, Pittsburgh, or at least the students would match at a higher rate to some of the fantastic residency programs they have there, but the match lists are quite different from comparably ranked schools. I do realize some of this is student (and school) priorities, but you'd think they'd follow the same pattern as other comparable schools. Anyone have an explanation?
Didn't realize Dartmouth would have a great EM program considering their volumes are in all likelihood considerably lower compared to some of the large urban medical centers. This is why it's pretty useless to look as rank lists outside your specialty...
I think this is a pretty Ballin rank list for EM:
U Arizona COM at Tucson Tucson AZ
*UC San Francisco-Fresno-CA Fresno CA
*Denver Health Medical Center (2) Denver CO
U Iowa Hosps and Clinics Iowa City IA
Massachusetts Gen Hosp Boston MA
University Hosps-Columbia-MO Columbia MO
Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (2) Lebanon NH
U New Mexico SOM Albuquerque NM
Hofstra Northwell SOM-NY Manhasset NY
NYU School Of Medicine New York NY
Icahn SOM at Mount Sinai-NY New York NY
*U Cincinnati Medical Center-OH Cincinnati OH
Oregon Health & Science Univ Portland OR
Allegheny Gen Hosp-PA Pittsburgh PA
U Texas Southwestern Med Sch (2) Dallas TX
Carilion Clinic-Virginia Tech Carilion SOM (2) Roanoke VA
U Washington Affiliated Hospitals (2) Seattle WA
Bold = strong
* = some of the undisputed badass programs (read: "best," but EM don't roll like that)
non-bold = I dunno cuz east coast is foreign to me
Edit: may be a couple earned east asterisk in there, too. Not sure because "east."
Full disclosure, I didn't know I bolded Dartmouth. Nor do I actually know. I'll fix it.Didn't realize Dartmouth would have a great EM program considering their volumes are in all likelihood considerably lower compared to some of the large urban medical centers.
lols....
i can count on one hand the number of non-top 15 institutions from that list
poor guy who matched at Temple, hope he didn't drink him/herself to death by now
Agree on name brand not necessarily meaning anything in EM. Hell many people consider Carolinas a top program and it's an academic affiliated community program. This is one of those moments were you shouldn't comment if you do not understand the specialty. As someone who interviewed at both places (and without bias as I am not attending either), Temple is by far - the superior EM program in Philly. I even spoke with multiple Penn students who were ranking Temple above Penn.

UCSF 2017 Match List
No Derm, Rad Onc, or Plastics Integrated?? Kind of surprised coming from one of th top med schools in the nation. (Not that there's anything wrong with not pursuing them, but they certainly had the doors open for them for anything).
Inbreeding galore.. 34.4%!
Anyone have UT San Antonio's match list??
Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile app
Um? In about ten days, all the schools will have their incoming residents plastered on their websites. So sorry you don't like it but it's sort of how things work. PS: a resident IS a physician
There's inbreeding, and then there's Harvard-level inbreeding.
~74/153 (48%) Harvard students matched at Harvard programs
I wonder if having multiple top hospitals w/ their own programs exaggerates this even compared to other top tiers.
Then again, it's Harvard, so it could just be that.
So it's your conclusion that 100% of Harvard students destroy Step? Lol ok.Late to this, but....yes, obviously having multiple hospitals means having duplicate programs and therefore many more spots. But, really, Harvard Med is starting out with the best of the best so it stands to reason that at least half of their students spanked steps and were ranked highly by all they interviewed. Not surprising that those who interviewed at an H hospital would rank one program #1 and then match.
What % of those interviewed at an H hospital do you think didn't rank an H hospital as #1.
What % of those interviewed at MGH do you think didn't rank MGH as #1.
I ask the last Q because a friend struggled between ranking MGH or JHU as #1 in a competitive residency. In the end, ranked MGH as #1 and matched.
