Can someone explain the preliminary surgery matches on these lists? Are they always applicants that didn't match a categorical position? Or do they include, for example, people who do a surgery prelim year before their radiology residency begins?

I'm honestly surprised UWash doesn't match to more highly ranked programs. At other schools at this level it seems as though students need to try to fall below a top 20 academic center, even when applying out of their league specialty-wise. I figured the name would pull about the same weight as NYU, Cornell, Pittsburgh, or at least the students would match at a higher rate to some of the fantastic residency programs they have there, but the match lists are quite different from comparably ranked schools. I do realize some of this is student (and school) priorities, but you'd think they'd follow the same pattern as other comparable schools. Anyone have an explanation?
don't forget that the main mission of UW is still to train physicians in the WWAMI area, so they do bring in a lot of students with "lower" GPA/MCAT averages to fit their mission. They also probably would tend to do worse on step. additionally, you notice this trend with other top public schools' match list (outside of CA) -- Michigan, Pitt, etc. seem to be weaker than their rank

This is the second time that I have seen you almost certainly confuse Universiry of Washington and Washington University of St. Louis (see your comment on the Ghanaian neurosurgery match thread).

No I know the difference and mentioned it correctly both times. The University of Washington is currently ranked #12 on the USNWR, which certainly traditionally places it in the category of "elite" schools. It is well known for it's surgical residencies and is ranked higher than MGH/Harvard on Doximity for neurosurgery (not that it means much, but my point in the other thread was that the residency is certainly comparable in prestige). I specifically compared it to NYU because they are currently "tied" on USNWR (again, not that it means much, but we can take it to mean they are comparable).

UW is a perfect example of why rankings need context. UW is not a top school. They take average applicants from average schools in their specific geographical area. Almost every other top school is taking students with 36+ MCAT 3.8/3.9 GPA (aka top pre-meds). UW takes dead average students and they're nowhere near as prestigious as the top 20-25 schools. I'm not in any way saying that UW isn't an exceptional school, especially for primary care, what I am saying is that PDs in competitive and top programs don't see UW and immediately treat those students the same way they would treat students from a top 20 school.

I figured as much. Honestly that's fantastic, especially in that area where they desperately need more physicians in the rural areas.

Not to further derail the thread by replying to these OT discussions, but lets be real, a lot of where UW matches has to do with the fact that they're actually successful with their mission of educating physicians who will practice in WAMI (or whatever that acronym is). There's a lot of self selection happening here on the part of the students of UW. They want to train in the regions they want to practice in: home.

Additionally, the only data we actually have says PDs don't give a rat's butthole about what your MCAT or uGPA was. So yeah, as med students, lets be careful about what we presume to know about PD thoughts as well. Yes?

@ChordaEpiphany and anyone else who can answer.

when applying for moderate/competitive specialties, do top schools give the same advantages as applying to top residencies?

You're overthinking this. Just do the best that you can in your school with the requisite research and you'll be fine.

You have to remember that while the name brand helps, those top schools also usually took the top performers in undergrad and that probably also correlated to their step scores as well.

As much as I'd like to believe that, I don't. There's no way that every person at a top 20 school scores 240+ even if they did great on their MCAT. If you look at the match list for Harvard, penn, etc in this thread pretty much everyone matched in a "top" program which also includes the bottom of the class. Seems that programs tend to take lower stat students from top programs over top students from low/mid tier programs.

I really think this is useless and has been discussed to death. Go to the highest ranked school to have the easiest shot at a prestigious residency.

However if you're at a lower ranked school, recognize that the score really does reset. If you're the cream of the crop somewhere, your options are nearly boundless.

Yes it's harder but you can go to mgh from vcu or whatever

Please explain how what I said is useless. It's a huge issue in the matching and everyone knows it. Someone that's the "cream of the cop" at a lower ranked program still won't usually get as good a match as someone that's average at a top program. While getting a good match is possible from anywhere, i think the lists in this thread prove my point.

Also, not really sure what you mean by scores resetting if you're from a lower ranked program...

Oh I know it's possible. Just saying that

Frankly, this thread should stay on topic.

The score resets because in theory you can match into mgh from any md school in the us. Yes you have to be the cream of the crop in scores, research and networking.

Also, is useless because if you didn't get into a higher ranked school, you just didn't. There's nothing you can do about it now. And I have no idea how it's a "huge problem" that top programs are inbred. It's not. At all. Top programs want top students and if you're bottom of the barreling it at a low ranked school, you have no business matching at mgh. So?

The average student academic stats (uGPA, MCAT, Step 1, and Step 2 scores) at University of Washington are more on the level of George Washington University than Washington University in St. Louis.

Can someone explain the preliminary surgery matches on these lists? Are they always applicants that didn't match a categorical position? Or do they include, for example, people who do a surgery prelim year before their radiology residency begins?

Surgery prelim positions are usually filled with:

1.) People pursuing residencies that require a medical/surgical/transitional prelim year (such as radiology, dermatology, etc.)
2.) People who apply for very competitive specialties and apply for both their preferred residency and surgery prelim spots, then MATCH to a prelim spot instead of their preferred specialty (these people complete this prelim year and reapply the next year).
3.) People who apply to a specialty (often too competitive for the applicant) and do not match, therefore getting a surgery prelim spot through SOAP.

The added advantage of 2 over 3 is that you could potentially have some more say in the location you end up. If you instead do not match and have to SOAP, there is no telling where you may end up or if you will find a program at all.

Perfect! Thanks a ton. I was hoping it wasn't predominantly people who applied for gen surg categorical and had to settle/scramble with a prelim spot somewhere else. I guess this is 1 of the many factors that makes Match lists impossible to dissect.

I just matched gen surg. It is definitely possible to try for a categorical gen surg spot and be forced into a prelim spot (from the match or SOAP).

The trick is to be realistic with yourself based on your stats and the info from NRMP Charting Outcomes. Example: Yeah I also love plastics, maybe even as a future career, but there is no way I had the numbers to apply for integrated plastics. Good thing I love gen surg so much!
