Official 2017-2018 Psychiatry Interview Invite Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Would it be reasonable to mention outside of the personal statement? As in an email?
We frequently get these emails, and they can help us to pay attention to an app we'd otherwise miss.
I suggest waiting until October-ish, and sending judiciously to programs you haven't heard from and where you truly want to interview.

@When is graduation again? did you have to fill out a supplemental app too?? Ugh now I'm sad :(
Yep. I submitted it day of. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I have a bit of connection to the area, which probably helped. Though tbh, I was feeling similarly before getting the invite seeing everyone grab up interviews at other places I applied to. Interviews will come. We just have to ignore our neuroses and be patient. I suspect things will really pick up that first week in October.

Hey CingulateGyro, I saw your post on the WAMC thread and relate to you quite well. I also just sent out my applications and am concerned due to my similar Step 1 score. I just wanted to say that I have received an interview already, so our Step 2 score hopefully will assist with bypassing the Step 1 screens!

Hey EmpathMan, that is great!!!!! Congratulations!!!!

I have not received any IIs yet but I am glad you have had better luck so far. Hopefully our experience can help others in our position next year. Only a few reaches because of location so I'm hoping for some bites.

I worried there is a frenzy of mass applying this year (or maybe it is like this every year) and the same 240s+ will get invites everywhere. My advisor told me 20 was a good number but I sent 65 apps so I am definitely part of the problem. I just really need to start working and paying off this debt. We're all more than our step 1 score, I'm just hoping in my case someone will lay eyes on my application to see that

Hey ! Congratulations. Are you a US MD? Also when exactly did you send in the supplemental app. I feel I was a little late in sending it

I got that one too. Definitely interested in the program, but worried I'll get auto-screened for the second part of the question.

Hey everyone. I'm curious if people wrote personalized "Why this institution" paragraphs or individualized personal statements for different programs. I heard from some residents that this is becoming very common, and just wanted to know other applicants' take.

I don't think it would hurt, but 2 PD's I talked to said it makes no difference to them at all. I was basically told that unless you've got that incredibly inspirational story, a personal statement isn't going to help, only hurt you. Essentially generic with no errors and nothing that makes you seem unprofessional or like a murderer is a good thing. I'd love to hear what the PDs here think as I could be completely wrong, but that's what I was told.

Only a tiny minority of invites had come out by this point last year. Programs have only had our applications for a little over 48 hours. I really would not be concerned.

Check out a later post in the thread from last year to get a sense of when invites came in: Official 2016-2017 Psychiatry Interview Thread

It makes us take a second look at the app sometimes, especially if it appears to be based on actual knowledge of the program, or points out a personal connection that they have with us that isn't otherwise apparent from ERAS.
If it is just repeating vague phrases from our website though... :barf:

I'm at a U.S. med school and our MSPEs are released Oct 1 as well (but sorry, can't answer your actual question!)

I'm afraid Stagg737 has it right. I know all of you put a lot of work into your PSs, but very seldom does one grab me as special. It can make you look like you can't write, or worse, don't know enough to have other people read it. Do use the PS to explain gaps in training. If your Dean's letter doesn't explain a gap, and you don't say anything and we forget to ask, the committee's imagination is generally a lot worse than the reality.

Anecdotal, but I've spoken to 4 or 5 IMGs about the process. One said they got 1 interview in September, general sentiment was most of their interviews came from mid-Oct to mid-Nov with some coming early Oct and a few coming after mid-Nov. One guy said he got 2 ii's in January but turned them down because he already had enough other ones.

Granted only 80 programs responded, but per the 2016 NRMP PD survey only 13% of IIs were offered prior to 10/1.
p. 127 http://www.nrmp.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/NRMP-2016-Program-Director-Survey.pdf

Taddy Mason -> The Man

Seeing this makes me feel a lot better about not having any actual ii's yet. I'm generally pretty laid back, so my recent neuroticism over this whole process has just made me even more anxious. Definitely needed a little reality check to help me chill out a bit. Shout out to @Evidence Based as well for the perspective.

This process makes us all completely unreasonable. Don't worry, I have my email open all day and jump 6 inches off my chair whenever I get a new email ("Save 10% now at LL Bean!!") We're all gonna be fine and will laugh at ourselves later for all our catastrophizing and cognitive distortions.

Yeah I've been freaking out all day too with no IIs. It sucks when all of your friends have gotten 1 or 2 at this point. -_- I kept checking to make sure my app was actually complete on ERAS lol. I've even thought about adding more programs =/

Anyone know of programs that require a pass on CS for US MD students to interview? I just read University of Rochester does and I was really hoping to get an interview there because the residents at my home institution love the program. Argh. I have not taken it yet

I have a similar question.. Does anyone know which programs, if any, require step 2 CK for an interview? According to the student affairs office at my school, almost no programs require it before extending an invitation to interview. But.. I looked at the 2016 NRMP survey of program directors, and the charts provided say otherwise... (see attached graph). Not sure what to think.

Frieda has information on this I think. The program websites will be more up to date though.

Step II for interview? No, but step II for rank, yes. We circle back around and look for step II scores at the end of interview season. If your school requires step II to graduate and you don't have it in Feb., why would we take the risk? Lots of other applicants with step II who took care of business when they should have.

That said though, when I'm looking at a waitlist of 200 equally interviewable people with similar Step I scores, and some have Step II scores while some do not....
Who do you think might have an edge when it comes to getting that interview?
