I called them and was told that they aren't taking any fellows this year .

Maybe they took internals this year.

I think AAMC needs to resolve this. A lot of people paid $25 to apply for this program. Lets say 400 applicants. That is a lot of money to waste if the program pulls out of the match. If they wanted to prematch internals they should not have entered the Match.

Can u tell me the name of the program, east or west coast? I believe couple of buddies may be interested if its east coast.

I was rounding with my GI program director today and apparently one applicant who had interview scheduled for october 5 cancelled it today(who cancels on a weekend. bum!!). N my PD did not save a wait list candidate and doesn't wanna go back to ERAS applications. He asked me if I knew anyone to take up the iv spot. I, being IMG myself, said I will tell next week. He asked me to get back with 3 names by tuesday and he ll pick one of them for the spot.

I want to help a deserving IMG with a spot(given how hard it is for IMGs and many deserving IMGs don get interviews, sorry AMGs). If you want to be considered, PM me with the following details(completely voluntary on ur part)
1. name, residency program and AAMC ID.
2. 4-5 few lines about your research experience, abstracts and NON ABSTRACT- publications(excluding case report publications).

If needed, I will ask for your full CV. Plz don copy paste your entire CV in the message. keep it succinct and crisp.

A couple lines about myself: third year fellow. planning to enter academics. This is not my original profile as I have posted multiple times in the last few years threads and want to conceal my identity for privacy reasons.

God bless

Seriously. Totally unfair. thats a lot of money for 500-600 applications

Yeah, I agree. The coordinator told me that they didn't even look at any of the applications. Three of the programs I applied to ended up not interviewing applicants, which I found annoying.

Last Call for IMG who wants to take up interview spot for a program on east coast.

Due to cancellation by candidate, there is an iv spot open for October 5.

So when you speak to AAMC they say to take it up with the program. However, its somewhat of an awkward thing.
This is one of those unsolved, unfair problems that should be tackled but will not be.

It would be so much better to have interviews in a different manner.

Btw anyone know what happened to UNLV program. Did it lose its accreditation?

Not sure about accredition part. but their entire academic GI faculty at their main medical center quit and opened a brand new private practice across the street. They did not hire last year to my understanding. Probably they may be on probation until they hire more faculty to maintain 2 spots a year. Currently they have 4 fellows and probably have enough attendings for only 4 spots I guess.

Christian stone was ex-PD and rest of the physicians in this page were the academic faculty

Not to change the topic: But does anyone have this rank things figured out?

It's a bit of a mind game:

Do I rank my ideal (reach programs ) as # 1 and 2, and then risk losing the better more realistic program by ranking it #3? (assuming someone else would rank my third choice as their #1; hence making the said person more likely to get it).

So you see....I don't think it's as simple as listing them. Because ranking a somewhat realistic program lower on my list can technically jeopardize my chances of matching there.

Oh Sweet Jaby Besus. Are you kidding?!

It really is that simple. In fact, there's a whole FAQ on it in the ERAS forum. A few dozen YouTube videos about it.

And a Nobel Prize awarded for it.

RANK THEM THE WAY YOU LIKE THEM.

Lol, that's not how it works! I really hope you didn't go through the US residency match thinking this way.

You rank in the order in which you want a program. If your top 2 didn't rank you highly enough, then your #3 then essentially becomes like your #1.

I want to explain this to you & not just shake my head at you, but I must admit that I am SHOCKED that you don't know this by now. Here goes nothing...

Hypothetical, simplified scenario: Every program has 2 spots. You rank: 1. A 2. B 3. C. Let's say program A ranked you #5. To begin, you match to A in one of their 2 spots. Adam ranked program C first but they didn't rank him at all. Adam is now considered for his #2 choice which is program A. Program A ranks him #1. Adam matches to A. Barbara's top 5 choices ranked her very lowly or not at all, she winds up falling to her 6th choice, program A, which ranked her #2. Adam and Barbara have secured both positions in program A. Unfortunately, you are now knocked out of that pool. You will then be considered for program B, which is your #2, and so on & so forth. As you look at the next person's match list, applicants fall into different programs' match pools & bounce around accordingly.

As you fall down your rank list, you can bump people from a program's matched pool if the program ranked you higher than them. On the same token, you may also be bumped. Either way, the match follows your rank list first, then only considers the programs rank list to see if you can match there in comparison to the other applicants who want them, realizing that the ultimate limitation is the number of spots each program has.

The point being, rank in your favorite order! If your top 10 don't like you, it has absolutely NO bearing on your chances to match at your number 11. If you fall to #11 and they ranked you #1 for example, no other applicant can take that spot from you, no matter how highly they ranked the program.

Idk if this will make sense to you. I tried to simplify it...

The caveat to this ranking discussion is that especially in smaller fields such as GI, I think a lot of programs will rank you higher if you reveal to them that you are ranking that program #1. I know one program blatantly said that the level of interest you express in that program will affect where that program ranks you.

I imagine this is because programs especially want applicants that highly want them, and it becomes more feasible for a program to craft a specific class.

I'm not sure how much value there is in telling programs that you are "very interested" in them or its equivalent, but I'm sure there can be a lot of value in telling your #1 program that they are indeed your #1. Of course you cannot tell multiple programs this both for ethical reasons and risk of being discovered.

I don't think this means everyone should rank their most realistic place #1, but it deserves consideration depending on what kind of positive/negative feedback you have received from specific progams.

Again...no it doesn't. Programs and applicants lie to each other all the time. Making your rank list based on anything you hear from a program (and programs doing the same for applicants) is a recipe for disaster.

Exactly well said. There are sadly such things as courtesy interviews where applicants clearly know it's unlikely a prestigious program will rank them highly. Would telling that program you are ranking them first make a difference? Maybe but probably no way. I can quote one PD who told me to let them know if ranking them high as it will certainly make them rank me higher. Sadly this is somewhat of a reality.

Good point as well. I say in the end rank based on preference not the vibe you received from programs as may be false. Some places are however more blatant about their ranking preferences.

Rank the programs how you like it, take everything a program/interviewer says (or doesn't say) with a grain of salt as far as their interest in you goes. I know of some people who #1-ranked programs that were calling them and showing tons of interest but didn't get ranked high enough to match there. Similarly, I know of people who heard absolutely nothing from a program and end up matching there. Figure that a program has an interest in having as many applicants rank them highly so that they don't have go far down on their match list or end up having unfilled spots. However, I can understand how a program's interest can affect your decision making, it's nice to feel wanted, especially if it's a program near the top of your list.

Having said that, I have heard that some big name programs only rank applicants that told them it was their #1 choice, that way they can choose their incoming class and brag about how they didn't go down their rank list (i.e. their program is highly desired.).

Hey! Are you, or anyone else, able to switch your Rush interview date to 10/8? I desperately need a switch from 10/8 to 11/5. I can aid in paying for travel changes but I'm not offering bribes! lol

I am so sorry I did not see this! It was the only date that worked for me anyways :(

Hello, Is anyone willing to exchange their interview dates at UFL Gainsville.

Thank you,

Has anyone received an interview invite from St Joseph's in Phoenix?
The program coordinator said that they have sent out all invites and filled all interview slots.

What are the chances for someone to match from one interview only ?

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile

Personally know someone who matched Cards with 1 interview only. I know GI is more competitive, but Cards is up there as well. Don't lose hope! But keep a back up plan.

I have a hard time understanding why GI is so competitive to match into after you have gotten the interviews.

For example, it's clear that most GI programs interview roughly 10 people for each spot that they have. Likewise, Internal Medicine programs do the same thing. So why is it that once you get the interviews (say you have more than 5) so many people still go unmatched in GI, whereas this doesn't happen in IM? I'm sure I'm missing something here.

Would someone be able to comment on having mentors/PD/LOR writers reach out to #1 programs on our behalf? Is this important? Should we do it for our #1 or few at the top? Is there an ideal time before rank order lists are due to do this?

its simply less spots for the taking. avg medicine prog has 15-20 spots. GI has 3-4 spots. most programs reserve half for internals. so u really have only 1 or 2 spots that u are competing. so theoratically will need close to 10 ivs to match, although its much harder to get 10 ivs in GI

I understand it's less spots. My point is they also interview less people.
