Observership USA: Visa/VWP

Hey there,

I have a question about Visa Issuance:

I am a Portuguese medical student, and got accepted at Englewood's Hospital (New Jersey) for a Clinical Observership in April for 1 month (won't be making any money). I'm not sure if I have to obtain visa B1 (or B1/B2, since I'll be also visiting family in NJ and visit NY as a tourist) or if the Visa Waiver Program (through ESTA) would suffice - Portugal currently belongs to the VWP. What would you recomend?
