I think if you are a solid overall person who has shown interest in the field with some research stuff, you should be able to match. Not sure what ties you have to California, but there are solid programs all across the country. It's definitely hard to match if you limit yourself geographically, no matter what type of applicant you are.
 
Publishing more won't necessarily make you a match in California. I always discourage people from taking a year off if they have a decent application but they have a goal of a specific location or are being picky. It often doesn't work out as planned and had you not taken the year off you probably would have matched just the same.
