MPH Fall 2016: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone beginning their MPH this fall hoping to continue on e.g. for a doctoral degree or to add a JD/MBA etc.? Is it the same application process as if you were applying as an outsider?

Hi

I am a foreign medical graduate and want to pursue MPH in the US. I have been accepted at Ichan School of medicine at Mount Sinai.
I don't know much about the program. It would be of great help if anyone of you could share your views regarding the program.
Thank you

Just out of curiosity, why did you apply to a program that you know nothing about? If you are paying so much money just to apply to schools, wouldn't you want to apply to schools that you know you'd want to go to if you could? All you need is a phone and internet access, you don't even have to visit the school until later on in the cycle. Maybe I'm just confused.

Sorry I can't give you any information on Mount Sinai. I didn't bother to look into it as I couldn't see myself living in NYC.

Hello! Sorry, this is my first time posting in the thread so I hope I am doing this right!

I am interested in the NYU program and was wondering what your GPA/GRE/Past experiences was when applying? I am quite nervous because I don't think my stats are great.

Congrats on the acceptance!!

Hi everyone! Sorry this is super late. I applied to Harvard for the Health Management track (starts in Spring 2017). I haven't received a decision yet and even though all my material has been submitted. I applied pretty late though.

Does anyone know if all their decisions are out? If not, when they will be out by?

Thanks!

Hello guys, I've applied to the fall 2016 MPH. and received the acceptance letter around one month back. I don't know about the spring admissions, but for the fall definitely they have started reviewing and accepting obviously.
Please save yourself the pain and do not go there. PM me with specific questions.

Hey guys! I've been a long time lurker but since so many of you gave me the confidence to apply to certain schools I decided to post my stats in hopes that it might help similar applicants like me!
Undergrad School: Top 20 Private University
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.03 Major/Minor: Public Health
GRE
: 158/149/5

Regular volunteer at a food bank, Ronald McDonalds, and 1st grade reading tutor

Interested in: Community health/health policy
Applied: BU, Columbia, UT Health (Houston), Emory, GW, U Michigan, Texas A&M, UNT, NYU (I was super nervous about not getting in anywhere so I applied everywhere )
Accepted: BU, UT Health, UNT, GW
Rejected:
Waitlisted:

Honestly BU and UT were two of my dream schools and I never thought I would get in! I think my strong letters of rec and personal statement (my grades may be rough but I'm confident in my writing) really helped me out! Every application has its strengths and weaknesses :)

Still waiting to hear back from everywhere else I applied - especially Columbia and Emory!

Please don't go to UNT.

Officially going to Rutger's and happy that yes finally the process is over :) :highfive:

I found the faculty more experienced even the admission officers knew everything regarding the program. I get all my answers here unlike Drexel and NYU. Congratulations to all:) I doubt if any one joining Rutger's with me?
Hey Saji! I will joining you in Rutgers this Fall! Which campus and which track? I will be in Epidemiology at New Brunwick!

Please save yourself the pain and do not go there. PM me with specific questions.

Yes - if it is UNTHSC SPH it is entirely possible. DONT GO THERE.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell me you didn't end up at UNTHSC.

He has chosen to go to JHU for his MPH.

Please don't go to UNT.

If you read her post carefully, you'll notice that she got into at least two of her dream schools, neither of which are UNT. I think we can safely assume that she's crossed it off her list. Also, almost all of the intent to enroll deadlines have passed, so this pleading is probably coming too late. In fact, many people have started their programs already (we have some new students).

Planning to apply in the next application cycle. Can anyone tell me what kind of schools I'd be competitive for?

GPA: 3.35 (hopefully up above 3.4 by the time I apply)
GRE: 329 (VR 165 QR 164 AW 5.5)

Majored in Public Health (in Public Health classes, I probably have like a 3.8 GPA), interned in County Public Health Dept doing field work for 2 summers, and serve on student government as a senator for 3 years.

You have fairly similar stats like mine, slightly better really. You should be competitive for basically every school in the country.

Hey everyone, congratulations on being accepted into schools! I'm going to be applying during the next cycle and was wondering about the timeline and if it generally matters when you apply/if decisions are generally rolling?

I was also wondering about how long of a period schools give you to get back to them on whether or not you will be attending.

Thanks!

If decisions are rolling then that means that they are making decisions up until the class is full. Generally the decision day for most programs is April 15th, if you apply march 15th or after for programs that don't have a firm decision date they usually give you a month after receiving your offer to decide.

Thanks! I was just concerned about if I applied early and having some schools get back to me before others.. and then maybe needing to get to some before others had replied.

I have been out of town and I have missed the immunization deadline for my school. How serious is this issue? Has this happened to anybody else before?

I think if you just email your school and explain the stiuation they would be okay with and just make sure you get your immunizations done asap. Schools are usually flexible about things like that...

Hi everyone!

This thread/forum has been so helpful in my process but since I'm currently graduating fall 2016, I am on the fence about applying to for a spring 2017 admission or wait for summer/fall 2017. I'm taking my GRE this week (160/151 avg on my practice tests) and my GPA is 3.03 (should be 3.1 by graduation hopefully). Would you say that it is easier/better chance getting in for Spring?

Which schools have spring admissions? There are a lot of universities that don't offer spring admits at all, so I think it would be best to wait for fall 2017 applications.

GWU offers admits for Fall, Spring, and Summer. One of our new RAs just started this summer and is taking four of her six core courses right now. This way, she can finish all her cores in first year, do her practicum over summer, and space out the four required departmental courses. Accelerated track students also tend to start in summer, so they have four terms to finish everything instead of just three.

The good thing about starting in the Spring, like you mentioned, is that the majority of applicants are applying for Fall, so the competition is not as great. Some negatives, like you mentioned, are that most programs offer only Fall/Summer admits, those that have Spring admits don't offer as many places as they do in the Fall, and you only have a short window to meet the priority deadlines as SOPHAS opens late August. So, like you, I'd recommend he/she wait to apply for Fall when more options are available.

Absolutely correct! I know of a few schools that offer spring admits, but I think by solely looking at those schools you would be tightening your range of potential universities by a significant amount. Plus, I think your stats are good enough to not fret too much about the competitiveness of the fall term.

Not to mention, waiting to apply for Fall will give him/her plenty of time if a GRE retake is needed. Based on my experience, scores on practice tests do not sync with either GRE or MCAT scores. I tend to do worse on the actual exam.

  • Check out the stickied threads at the top of this forum. Here, you will find useful public health sites, advice on epidemiology degrees, and a general FAQ that I update on an as needed basis. You can try to go through the WAMC thread, but it's long and I recommend only going through the first and last two pages.
  • Visit this site: http://ceph.org/. Here, you will find a list of CEPH accredited MPH programs. Proceed to google the ones you are interested in and go onto their admissions page.
  • Use the search function at the top right corner of the page to see if any of your questions have been previously answered.

Following these steps will provide you with the answers you seek. No one is going to spoon-feed you. These questions are all easily answered with a Google search.

Applied for Epidemiology and Control of Infectious Diseases at LSHTM but I'm still waiting for their reply. I hope I'll hear from them soon!

Hi
I'm an International Student wanting to start in fall '17.
When do I start applying?
Should International students upload all the transcripts to SOPHAS as well?

Edit: found answers. Sorry.

Any folks here starting Rutgers New Brunswick MPH? :) It would be great to get in touch with a few people ! I know orientation day is over , but unfortunately I couldn't make it due to visa processing delays!

I've been accepted to MPH programs at CGU, LLU, Drexel, NYMC and NYU.

Which would be the best one to attend considering the program?

From the reviews there's mixed opinions and i have never been more confused!

Future goal is to do a residency in paeds so I assume a school with an attached medical program may be of benefit since I'm international.

Any advice?

Visit ceph.org, you can choose your uni and field of interest and browse them.
Open a Sophas account probably on Aug 17 and start your application process.
Ping me if you need any help.
Excuse the typos. I'm on my phone.

Can anyone give me some more insight on NYU? Living in NYC seems like a great opportunity to have connections to many organizations and resources but it's the program itself that worries me. I was accepted into their brand new public health policy and management program, and when I attended their Admitted Students Day yesterday, there seemed to be a lack of information regarding where graduates end up working. It seems like most either work for the New York City (or State) Department of Health or global health organizations. I'm more interested in working for a domestic consulting firm, government organization, or NGO but there is no graduate employment data for NYU I can find anywhere on their website. It also worries me that they're only a program of public health rather than a school.

Long story short, did anyone else attend the Admitted Students Day or is anyone considering NYU for their MPH? Do you mind sharing your thoughts?

I'm deciding between BU and NYU but I feel as if I'm leaning more towards BU just because of my hesitations with certain aspects of NYU's new program.

So, I am also considering applying to BU. Have you visited the town?

Did you like that some courses are 4 and others are 2 credits? I figure the 4-credit courses have "lab" portions of the course where you learn more "practical" aspects of the topic you are studying. Is this true? That was how my Research Methods course in undergrad was.

What was the reason you decided on BU? I maybe attending.

Alrighty, paid my BU deposit and currently negotiating an apartment. See whoever may attend over there! I'll also be opening up some spots at other schools/financial aid waitlists in this upcoming week. Hope everyone ends up in their dream programs. :)

What are some good spots to stay? What does residence budget look like?

Accepted to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine for an MSc in Epidemiology! But they want me to decide in less than 28 days whether or not to move to London- yikes!!! :(
I'm curious, did you end up choosing LSHTM?

Hi all,

Need some help here. I applied to medical school and was unsuccessful. I'm taking some time off to get my MPH. It's something that I wanted to do even if I got into medical school, because I think it will make me a well-rounded physician. I'm interested in health education as a way of helping large communities of people and I'm interested in public policy as a way of improving underserved population's living conditions. While I think an MD is a more direct way of helping people, I think learning more about public health will be helpful in allowing me to reach a larger number of patients, prevent illnesses before they occur, and ensure that the treatments I offer are effective.

That being said, does it really matter if I attend a school or a program? To me, it seems like so long as it's accredited, it's fine. Is this not true?

Does the university that I attend for my MPH really matter? It seems that I keep seeing a lot of big names pop up like UMich, Yale, Harvard, JHU. I don't live near any of these schools, and it would be nice to stay close to home to cut down on expenses.

Lastly, is it true that MPH programs care more about experience than GPA and test scores? As far as my resume is concerned, none of those categories are extravagant, so it is something I'm concerned about.

Thank you!

I'm curious, did you end up choosing LSHTM?

Nah, I chose to stay in the US. From what I've heard from individuals who either studied at LSHTM or work with colleagues who went to LSHTM, you're better off getting an American public health education.

Undergrad School: Boston College
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.13 (had a rough first few semesters but GPA steadily inclined in the second-half)
Major/Minor: B.S. Psychology, concentration in Neurobiology (was pre-med so most of those requirements killed my GPA)
GradGPA

-Currently enrolled in post-baccalaureate Bible school & church service program; will continue to be enrolled until I start the program

I know that my GPA and GREs are a bit low for some of the program that I am applying for but these are the schools that I can envision myself attending in the future. I'm hoping that my experience and solid recommendations can gain me entry into some of these programs. Like I noted earlier, I'm particularly interested in public health informatics which is why Columbia is my top choice. I know that most schools don't have a formal emphasis or concentration in this but I found most MPH HPM programs attractive to me versus degrees in informatics.

Wishing you all the best of luck!
Our stats are really similar, and I'm applying for Fall 2017! Did you end up taking the GRE again? If so, what did you score? I'm literally on the same boat as you. I have a 152 in Verbal, 162 in Quant, and 3.5 in writing. I want to take the GRE again in January, but I'm not sure if that will even help.

Was wondering if anyone here is currently in Yale's Health Policy MPH program. If so, are you enjoying your time in the program/New Haven? What internship and faculty access opportunities are there for students? What types of jobs are graduates landing? I plan to visit in January.

CSULB MPH in Community Health: Accepted

I have officially accepted and paid my deposit to CSUF! HUUURRAAYYY!! I seriously didn't think I would get in anywhere! Keepin the hope alive for my fellow applicants (current or future) who have a GPA below a 3.0 (mine was a 2.84)-- grind and hustle until you reach your goals!!
Congratulations! Do you mind sharing your other stats/experience/what made them accept you? I'm a sophomore undergrad with about a 2.85; I still have time to raise it but your acceptances does help assure me :)

Hi everyone! I'm just lurking on past threads to get an idea about admissions timelines and variables people took into consideration when deciding-- and I'd love to hear how you all are liking/liked your schools and programs! Thanks a lot!!
