Hey guys... Just thought I would post on here and see if there was anyone else interested in sharing information about programs they had heard (or not heard from).

I applied on December 1st. So far I have heard from 1 program. I have heard that you usually don't hear much until much much later, but I would like know if anyone else has heard anything.

Privare messaging is okay too!!!!

I approve of this. It has all the essential components of an "official" interview thread.

I can't be of much help, other than I must disclose that I am faculty for an MIS fellowship. The time frame changed within the last couple years, so I'm not sure the dates will be meaningful.

In general, supply outweighs demand for MIS fellowships, and you will get some nice interview invites. I would decide first what you want to be doing (100% bariatric, mostly bariatric with a few other cases, 50/50 bariatric and foregut/complex hernia, and no bariatric).

On a separate note, I would be careful when judging the importance of a robotic experience. While it sounds great, it really depends where your surgeon is on the learning curve. If the fellowship is just STARTING to do robotics, you will be watching while your staff operates.

Thanks for the info on the Robotics training at many institutions. Still haven't heard from many places and I applied fairly broadly. This website has been awfully quiet this year as well. Maybe its still just a little early, but I am looking forward to moving on to this next phase and ready to get things started. Anyone out there in the same boat?

I also applied on December 1st. I have gotten 2 invites so far - hoping for more soon once the application actually closes. Long Island Jewish and South Florida - Baptist. Interestingly south Florida hasn't finalized their interview dates but called to let me know that they are interested in having me come for an interview.

That's a great pearl about the robotics! Will have to inquire about the experience level since it's a must have for me.

PM is great for me too if anyone's looking to chat!

Finally found this thread...

UF Jacksonville
Emory

Those are who ive been offered from so far but i applied to quite a few others... waiting to hear.

thanks for the info! One of my co-residents applied to MIS programs last year and matched. He said most interview offers didnt come out til late january. That should offer some solace to those patiently waiting...

Congrats. Does everyone have their letters of rec all received by the FC yet? two of my writers havent sent theirs in yet and i wonder if thats a factor when offering interview spots.

I had my letters in back in December, asked for them to be turned in before the holidays and they were done by mid-month or so.

Just for clarification, which Emory program is this on the list? Just crossing off my list...

It's the advanced gi mis one at Emory.

I'm interviewing at unmc on April 8. I've heard great things but I can't say I know Omaha too well. Flying to Tampa immediately after so that may get a little crazy with airports haha.

yeah, agreed...the TSA agents are going to know me very well after April is over! Good luck!

FWIW ive heard that a lot of programs are meeting this week and next week to review applications prior to sending out round 1 invites for interviews. Last years thread has a huge rush of names added in february. even if youre J1 youve still got tons of time for interview offers. one of the people in my program matched MIS last year and he was J1 plus he had about 15 interview offers.

Glad to know! Heard from some powers that be, that with funding scarce, more and more programs are having to bill for fellows to meet the cost of the fellowship or have fellows cover surgery/trauma call, neither of which is possible on J1.

did any of you all take out loans for interviews? im looking into it. i feel like this is way more expensive than residency interviews for some reason.

SeedSewer,

I am not sure if it's the flights/hotels that are more expensive or the quantity but I definitely feel that this is much more expensive than residency interviews. Right now I am scheduled for 8 and am starting to get overbooked. I also think that since this process is elective we should be allowed to tell them what dates we want to come interview! LOL! probably won't go over too well...

Nysurg that sucks about providence but at least they sent out a rejection I guess. Was it for the HPB spot?

Looks like you've got a solid list lined up though. Never fun to have to go through match again but thanks a ton for contributing so much to this list. This is the first time I've used the SDN for anything other than increasing my anxiety haha.

Seedsewer,

It was for the Bariatric/ MIS spot. I didn't apply to any HPB programs. Yes and believe it or not I'm kinda glad for the rejection- tells me where I stand vs. this no communication/ silent treatment from the other programs. No room for doubt- you know?

Agreed that this match process sucks! I'm not sure where I'll end up but I hope it's a good fit. My issue with MIS is that there no clear rank order of these programs- other than maybe 1 or 2 I have no idea where to find comparisons. There's no thread on SDN. You have any idea? I just want to know which programs are in the top 5/10 programs and why?

Also anybody have any clue what the interviews are like? Any insight would be great!

Yeah the thing with these programs is that it has a lot to do with the PD. Clearly there are names that stand out in the field (ninh Nguyen, swanstrom, etc) but a lot of it has to do with finding a program that fits your needs.

Swedish for example is very thoracic heavy. Case western does a lot of POEM procedures and endoscopy, certail others are very bariatric heavy (pun definitely intended) and others do a ton of abdominal wall. This isn't ground breaking info but I think as long as the program has been around a while and fits your needs then great. If I had a degree from the greatest name ever but all I did was lap whipple then it doesn't make much sense for what I want to do going forward.

Agreed about a program that fits my needs. I think that is my #1 priority.

However, right now I have a few interviews and still have yet to hear from a few more programs...I anticipate that I may have to cancel an interview in order to go a program that I think that I might like better because I cannot possibly go to them all. I just want to know that I am making a solid decision with something behind it other than gut feeling and I like the location - know what I mean?

Anyway probably just anxiety...

nysurg

Anyone in your program go through mis match before? I'm fortunate in that a guy last year went through match from mine so he's got a good overview of the program's he applied to. If you want to direct message me I can see if he's got any insight on the program's you're considering. I know some people like to play it super close to the vest though so no worries if you're uncomfortable sharing.
