Hi all,

Could someone provide a list of salaries that entry level healthcare professionals can hope to achieve in Singapore? For family reasons I am planning on coming to Singapore to practice dentistry. I will be enrolling in the U Penn School of Dental Medicine, so there will certainly be a hefty debt coming from an Ivy League institution. What do you guys know about US-credentialed folks who hold doctorate degrees? (As all MD, DMD, DDS, etc. professionals in the US are doctorate grade)? How much can I expect to earn in Singapore as a dentist (not dental assistant)?

Thanks!

Oh linsy, the dumb folks in singapore wouldn't know much about a medical/dental doctorate. They only confer dental bachelors there..They are probably way in awe of it.....

Anyway, FYI, ur school is recognized by the dental association of Singapore. Guessing that u will come here straight after graduation, u will be given conditional registration if u have a letter of employment from a local hospital or a dental group. The typical period to gain full registration is ~2-3 years after which u can set up ur own shop with full registration.

Pay is miserable during this period. I am not sure about private dental group, but in gov hospital ( which is the one more likely to employ you) , Medical officer and dental officer starting pay is ~3.2K SGD. It increase by ~5-8% per year.

With full registration, it's typically better. A general dentist can make ~12KSGD-15SGD with one of the private dental group as a salaried employee. If u set up a private practice , then it's up to you.

Several things to note for Singapore. There is no prevalent culture of regular visits to the dentist here. The only time they go to the dentist is when the pain comes, eg from wisdom tooth, a decaying tooth or for cosmetic purpose ( eg, braces)

Also, in Singapore, a general dentist might also engage in orthodontics, or other specialist branches of dentistry ( except oral/maxillo surgery), which means u can make quite a buckload if u rack up a good referral base for doing braces without going for a few more years of training. Of cse, the general dentist must be prudent to refer to the real specialist when certain things are beyond them. There are specialist training programs ( aka residency ) here that trains specialist but their intake is few and typically not open to foreigners.

Currently, the dentist to population ratio is low ( yes, there are only a miserable 34 dental spots in the local university per year, a number that hasn't changed in like 20 years while the population number slowly balloons..) so business is REALLY good. You typically need 1 week or so to book a dentist, they dun entertain walk ins, if it's any indication of what u can possible be earning.

 all commonwealth countries confer bachelors, it doesn't mean we're dumb

That's not all..i remember asking to write a memo to my camp MO,this doctor then flung the letter in front of me without giving me the envelop. When i asked for it, again flung the envelop in front of me very reluctantly.

Is it true that physicians from the United States must have received their M.D. from certain schools? Is it true that the Singapore government will not allow U.S. M.D.s to practice unless they graduated from one of thirty schools on their list? How does it work to apply for a practice license in Singapore as a U.S. physician?

Yes if your university isn't in the list then you will probably have to write in to the Singapore Medical Council to ask for advice.

The list of accredited universities is here

Hope this helps

While googling for Registrar in Singapore,I landed here and find the threat informative.

I practice Int Med in a S E Asia, think eligible for Registrar in Int Med in Singapore, since I held MRCP diploma.

Thanks ppen1 for your approach on moving to Singapore as Service Reg grade ,ie.cost, work, training&family issues.

I wonder whether you or anybody else have already joined in as Service Reg there.

If so, how do you find it?

I seriously consider to work there, but also concerned about working hours and realistic chance of being selected as AST in Int Med as a 40 plus IMG!

I think that salaries are base on the hospital you are planning to apply to and the qualification you have. For my case, i am foreign student in Singapore and i am aiming to get a position for an aesthetic hospital in Singapore.
