Recently, I learned that Lasix was named such because it "lasts six hours". I thought that was really helpful in knowing its DOA without having to blindly memorize it. In hind site, it makes sense, but I hadn't ever realized it before, so it really blew my mind lol.
I'm trying to find a list of drugs whose name gives similar insight to what it does, but I can't find much.
Obviously , Prevacid was named because it "prevents acid", Premarin for the mares it comes from, and Xarelto for inhibiting factor Xa. Does anyone know of any other cool and clever brand names? Please share all you can think of!

Thanks!

The Lasix thing must be a rumor, no company would name it's drug after a prohibitively short duration of action.

Soma, synthoid, procrit, ansaid, plan b, duragesic

Ambien = AM bien = good morning

I love that Ansaid basically admitted it was just another stupid me too drug that contributes to the rising costs of healthcare.

I'm continually amazed that doctors still prescribe these wonky NSAIDs. I gotta keep all this junk in stock. Feldene, ansaid, lodine, ponstel, relafen daypro and dolobid. Arg,,,, all we need is indocin, naproxen, ibu, and tordal.

Lunesta - Roughly translates to "the moon is here" in spanish

The name warfarin stems from its discovery at the University ofWisconsin, incorporating the acronym for the organization that funded the key research (WARF, for Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation) and the ending -arin, indicating its link with coumarin.

The apidra one is amazing me! I really would have never linked that with being rapid acting. The protonix one also never occurred to me. Thanks everyone!
Fixed it for you.

I wonder what customers would think if I told them that...

Lol. Thank you for the clarification, though the urine part was intended to be inferred. I didn't think that pregnant horses excreted, like, ready-to-go tablets or anything.

Actually, I think *patients* should be told that, at least if they ask what the source of estrogen is. There are a decent number of people (equestrians, probably vegans I would imagine?) who oppose the method of obtaining mare urine. I don't agree or disagree, but I'm all about educating patients on what they've been prescribed :)

Back when I was a newly minted pharmacist, this and Seldane were the most commonly mixed-up drugs. As for doctors prescribing them, it's often because the person has been on them for years and there's no reason to change, and/or the doctor's generally had good results with it.

How about http://www.caverject.com? (NSFW)

When I was in school, we all had to invent and market a product. Most of the younger students had serious items like oral insulin and artificial blood, but us older students mostly created joke products. Mine was Xanthrix, a pill that turns hair blonde.

Humulin is another item whose name fits this thread; Iletin, its predecessor, does too.

Did you know that the launch of Cialis was delayed because some people with the surname Cialis sued the drug company and requested that the name be changed, even if just by one letter?

provigil - promotes vigilance
tussionex - tussive nix
