MPH Johns Hopkins MPH 2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, I just checked SIS and still have no updates. Hopkins may be number 1 ranked but they are letting me DOWN with FinAid and transparency

You could always call/email?

The Bloomberg Fellowship page seems to be receiving frequent, small updates. I just noticed this one under the FAQs

Q: Over what time period will the Bloomberg Fellows Program scale up to full implementation?
A: The Bloomberg Fellows Program will be adding more Fellows to each class through the FY 21-22 academic calendar.

I guess we got our answer about 50 Fellows this year. I wonder how many Fellowships they will actually award this month.

Same boat for Fin Aid. ~31k Loans and 1K work-study.

Did anybody in the part-time/online program get $6,000 in Anticipated Scholarship? Nobody seems to know if this is or is not the Welch Scholarship...

I accepted the offer for admission and my fin aid came three hours later...not sure if the two things were linked or not, but I also recieived it via email

I posted this on the facebook group, but maybe you all can help out or are in a similar situation:

Is anyone else struggling with the financial aid situation? I will need to fill out the Graduate Plus Loan application to cover the cost of tuition, but a letter sent by fin aid says the app won't be available until May! My question is how can I accept the offer of admission by April 15th without knowing if my remaining need will actually be covered? If any current students were in a similar situation any guidance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

"Please note that all of our internal MPH scholarships have now been awarded."
I guess that answers that question +pity+

Do y'all think the FinAid package from Hopkins is at all negotiable?

From an email? I missed this.... I assume internal MPH Scholarships do not include Bloomberg.

I think most anything is negotiable - they have the funding, especially because they're not giving out as many Bloomberg Fellowships this cycle. I think the better question is who at Hopkins would do the negotiating.

Unfortunately not me, but I look forward to hearing your thoughts and impressions. And tell them to release the Bloomberg Fellowship decisions already. ;)

I'll be there. I'm actually pretty set on Columbia at this point, tbh, but I already made these plans so why not go? Maybe they'll blow me away!

Speak of the devil. I just received the following email:

"Thank you for your email and continued interest in the Bloomberg Fellowship. We are continuing in our review process and hope to have decisions sent to all applicants no later than March 17."

*fingers crossed*

I will be there too! It's Hopkins vs. Harvard right now. I'm guessing we will be wearing name tags. Look for Kenan!

Thanks for sharing - that is helpful. My work was just asking when I might know, so that they can plan the 2018 budgeting year.

Nope, haven't heard anything about fin aid or scholarships (accepted into June cohort but deferring to Nov 2017). Even the fin aid link on SIS is greyed out for me, so I can't check there.

Hi all !!! Got admitted to mph/mba program yesterday...anybody else who got into the program...tuition fee is a big concern ...

Congratulations! You're not alone, financially this program seems to be an issue for everyone.

Hi all. I have notes from today's admitted student's day. They are fairly extensive, so I'm just providing the link to the google doc here. Feel free to DM if you have specific questions or if my notes are confusing. I tried to use italics if it was clearly my observation rather than notes from the material. And I had a chance to meet Mr HowCavalier (Hi!)!

Thanks @sjane your thoroughness is much appreciated!

Hopkins Visitor day today was pretty awesome! Nice to meet those of you I met, ha. Overall I left feeling very impressed by the professors' passion.

Oh man, these are crazy good notes. If we end up at the same school, let's be study buddies!

REALLY appreciate all this insight. Thank you! I'm going to the admit day in April, bc it's close to Harvard/Yale admit days and I'm coming from CA. Excited, but nervous about waiting until so close to decision day to even see campus.

Bloomberg is a lovely building. Departments are organized by floor and there's plenty of windows and natural lighting. Across the street is the historic and gorgeous Welch Medical Library. You are also directly next door to Johns Hopkins Hospital on the right, which is just a mammoth hospital really. Not much to comment on here. Some parts of the hospital look really nice and are brand new, and other parts look they haven't been renovated since the 1920s. They have a nice gym (2 actually), and an outdoor pool (lol...I'm sure this a huge factor in your decision). Some decent places to eat around campus as well.

The area immediately surrounding the medical campus isn't great. Directly south isn't so bad, as after a mile or so you run into a very touristy area knowns as Fells Point, which has colonial area buildings and a great waterfront. Crime (violent and otherwise) is an issue at times. JHH is doing a lot to try to revitalize the neighborhood- which has caused some controversy among locals (i.e gentrification).

I worked at Johns Hopkins Hospital for 2 years and never had an issue, but I did pay close attention to my surroundings. I never walked home to my apartment for instance, even though it was only 2 miles away. If I happened to stay late, past 8 or so, I would have asked for an escort. After 6 PM its like crickets around the campus. Crime alerts were sent via email and text about once every two weeks or so, sometimes less sometimes more (like during the riots). I personally don't know anyone who suffered a violent crime around the area, but I do know people who had their phones stolen (admittedly because they weren't paying attention) or had their cars broken into.

Any other questions about the campus, let me know. Sorry to be such a downer! Crime is an issue, but I think that's the unfortunate reality of a lot of urban hospitals.

Hi everyone, I'm new here but have been trying to decide Harvard vs Hopkins for a couple of months now. Wasn't able to attend students day so thank you for the Google Doc !!
Looks like several ppl may be deciding Harvard vs Hopkins- would love to hear your thoughts. I'm a current med student and would be doing the 1 year MPH at either school.

Hi Everyone!
I was at accepted students day last Friday and was wondering if anyone could DM the email addresses from the student panel that spoke at lunch. I misplaced my yellow sheet :/

Maybe a long shot, but did anyone else apply for the SOURCE Scholarship? I submitted my app- supposed to hear by the end of the week. It seems like a fantastic program!

I did! It's nice to see that there are some many programs working with the school to strengthen the community, being a source scholar would be a great experience on many levels.

That's definitely a program that can have a huge impact, good luck! I applied for the Healthy Homes Initiative and the school health coordination programs.

Do you have to put in a deposit to apply? If I go to Hopkins I would love to do it but was hesitant to apply and then drop it

I believe SOURCE was due last Sunday.

Yeah, it was. They sent out an email Monday morning confirming they received my application, that they would be reviewing applications this week, and that they would let us know the status of our application by the end of the week.

I got an interview with the organization I applied for-you? I'm pumped-and now really nervous!!!

Are there any hopkins facebook groups that you guys know of that we can join???
Yes there's one for MPH - search JHU MPH Class of 2017-2018. I'm in that one even though I'm an MHS student.

Anyone know of any groups specifically for MHS students?
