Hello, I am currently in my second year of high school. Although I am not considered as an introvert, I do talk softly and tend to be shy around people. Is this be a problem that I have to fix if I want to be a doctor?? Thank You!!

Hey man, being open and have good communication is really important when it comes to bedside manner.
I've learned to really improve my communication skills. I am sure a Doctor will tell you that is is really important! :D

Don't think of it as being something set in stone. In med school you will be forced to improve your communication skills and it is totally doable, even for the shy ones.

I relate to this so much. I have had social anxiety issues for as long as I can remember.
However, one way I have been able to get over this is to put myself in more situations where I have to interact with people. I volunteered at a clinic where I used to talk to patients sitting there about ways to prevent diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. I also volunteered in a hospital where I was escorting patients from place to place, and I was able to practice my smalltalk with them. I recommend volunteering at more places and forcing yourself to engage in conversation with sick people, because youll probably be spending the next 35-40 years working with them!

Get a front desk job at a gym. It forces you to talk to crap loads of people every day, plus you get a free membership ;)

Also, fake it til you make it.

No it's not a problem at all. Many of my fellow physicians are a bit socially awkward. I can be socially awkward too at times

Thank You!!

my only advice is don't be too self critical/hard on yourself, because often people who are shy can be a tad self critical. I worked with one shy student who rotated with me and she was enjoyable to work with

It's not a problem, but it can cause you to miss out on making important connections with people who can help you in various ways. I'd advise joining public speaking-related like Youth in Goverment and Mock Trial to build your courage while you're still young. It's more difficult when you're older and socially anxious. The more often you face your fear of interacting with strangers, the more comfortable you'll be doing so.

Even if you don't end up in medicine, you are better off getting over "shyness." You can certainly be a successful introvert. Introversion isn't the same as shyness. It just means you draw energy from being alone.

I feel the same way. :cyclops::cyclops: I also live with a very "loud" family and they never fail to point out how quiet I am which is high key annoying. Interestingly, I'm way more open & outspoken with strangers. Try getting a job (if you'd like one) OP! My new job as a receptionist has helped me to communicate way more effectively!

What I found is that when I am in the hospital I am one person that talks and behaves very differently from outside the hospi. I think you will be surprised at what you are capable of when it's "game time" (for a lack of better words). So no, you will be fine.

No it's not a problem since you will most likely mature and grow out of all this as you get older and have more experiences in life.

Or med school will beat it out of you one way or another.

Or you become a pathologist. ;)

You've gotten a lot of replies already but I figured I might as well add one more to the mix.

I used to be a lot more quiet in early high school. I still am, but I feel a lot more comfortable coming out of my shell when the situation calls for it (interviews, certain workplace environments, etc.). I think I was mostly able to achieve this by seeking leadership opportunities in clubs I excelled in. This wasn't really on purpose to be honest - it was orchestra in high school and dance in college, but doing well gave people a reason to talk and listen to me, and that really helped me overcome a lot of my social anxiety.

I know that's easier said than done though. Also this has only worked for one person that I know of so far (me), so take it with a grain of salt.

This will be an area you will want to work on. Being a doctor will help you in this area though. Through persistence your brain will eventually habituate to uncomfortable social feelings. If you can find a way of rewarding yourself for venturing outside your comfort zone you may even start to enjoy the more social settings.

Don't let something like this scare you away from your dream.

Also, maybe you just need a system for dealing with social situations, which is totally ok. There a book, warren buffet even suggested reading it before called, "how to win friends and influence people."

Dont mind the title, it was written forever ago but its direct and I think there's a ton of great advice in it.

When I took microbiology, we had to do a group presentation and one kid got points taken off because he spoke too soft. So yeah, fix the shyness fast. You're in high school so it will naturally go away when you start to drive or have your first drink which may or may not come after you learn how to drive.

I am actually basing my PS around how I have overcome my shyness and become more confident through my pre-med experiences. Hope it works in my favor!

You don't have to be a crazy party person who just clicks with everyone, and is the most popular person. You basically just have to know how to communicate with people.
I'm pretty shy and awkward. Be yourself!
