Interventional Radiology Interview Thread 2016-2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I emailed the program director, here's his response:

Hi XXXXX, Thanks you for your interest in the integrated IR program at BWH. You are among the candidates that our selection committee is still considering but we have not made a final decision on who we will be offering interviews to yet. We are coordinating the integrated IR interviews with the DR interview process and as a result will not be able to offer any interviews next week. We are planning on interviewing in December and January. We should be ready to send out the formal interview invitations next week, I apologize for the delay. Best Regards, Tim Killoran.

Has anyone heard from BWH recently? They are really pushing the limits of what you can refer to as "early November"

Yo, anyone interested in switching IR/DR interview dates at BIDMC to 12/8? Looking for January or other dates in December.

how many IR interviews is everyone getting?

14 IR/DR, 5 DR (at programs that don't have IR/DR). Every program that offered an IR interview offered a DR one as well. I'm planning on attending 10 IR/DR and 5 DR.

Any U.S. IMGs willing to share their experience in applying for Integrated IR?

Members don't see this ad :)
Anyone who got an UCSD IR invite also get a DR invite? Or is this another combined one? Doesn't seem to say anything about that in the invite letter

They sent out two separate invites for IR and DR with a link to schedule an interview for each of them, but it was unclear whether or not you could schedule them as a combined interview or whether you were supposed to schedule them on two separate days. I emailed the admin to ask and haven't heard back - does anyone else have intel on this? I'm assuming we can interview for both simultaneously, so I scheduled them both for the same day .

I have a 12/5 Mayo IR/DR interview slot and am looking to trade for a 12/19 slot. Please PM me if you are willing to swap. Thank you!

Wait you had a link? Mine just told me to go to eras scheduler...

Has anyone received confirmation of their interview date at BWH? The letter mentioned that the date would be confirmed by the end of the week but I imagine the Thanksgiving holiday might have pushed it back a bit. Hope I'm not the only one without a confirmation. :)

how many IR interviews is everyone getting?

16 IR/DR Invites and a healthy handful of DR only
Will probably only go to 10 or 11 of the IR/DRs

Realistically, some places with DR only this year but who have phenomenal IR departments will make their way into my top 10. I'd rather go to a top DR program with great IR and match or internally transfer into IR/DR later over committing to a mediocre IR program now

Quick question, does anyone who interviewed at UTSW in dallas for IR recall how many IR positions they will offer this year?

If you go to the NRMP website, they have # of spots listed for all the programs

On another note, this IR vs DR invite process grows more and more confusing, past few weeks have been quite a few IR invites with DR waitlists or rejections. Im excited to be on the other side and see how in the world they make these decisions

Has anyone been confirmed for interview date at BWH for IR?

Not technically but the coordinator reached out to me since the date I wanted was full. So I'm guessing if he didn't contact you yet, guessing you got your first choice.

Hi everyone, trying on the IR thread too - anyone willing to switch an interview date at UCSF for 1/18 (where I'm currently booked) with 1/24 (where I'm trying to target). Thanks in advance.

I had a random question...do all of these integrated IR programs require you to do a prelim year in gen surg at their hospital? Or is it most? Or do some give you the choice of where you want to do your prelim year (and what type--medicine, peds, transitional, surg)?

It is entirely program dependent with a fair mix of all the options you listed.

Most would advocate a surgical internship as it reflects the IR work flow, lifestyle and peri-procedural conditions.

Is anyone else in the same boat for MGH? They sent out an invite email/letter asking to call. After calling they said they would get back to me about opening more dates (they only had 1 date at the time), and then they never got back to me.

Is there some kind of ranking for IR fellowships/IR residency? I can only find rankings for DR programs.

Go to Doximity, select residency-->radiology-->sort by reputation-->select intended fellowship as IR

How many programs did you guys apply to (IR-I + DR combined)?

That's not accurate, that just ranks by which percent of the residents go into IR.

Something medical students may not be aware of if that many of the big name institutions or "top 25" programs have mediocre IR fellowships. Many of the best IR fellowships are "mid tier" programs. This mostly has to do with the types of cases and volume of cases available. I tend to think that larger institutions have more aggressive surgeons, urologists, nephrologists, etc who fight harder for turf. There are of course some exceptions. For example, Michigan is supposed to be one of the best in the country.

That's why I am looking for a list of top IR programs (separate from their DR reputation)

I'll be curious to see what the IR rankings look like, as I imagine we'll start to see them come out in the next couple years. I've also heard Michigan is really good, and I think the dotter institute at OHSU will be among the top as well.

As someone who is applying in a couple years (M2) i'm grateful to all of you who are pioneering the way. Also that is integrating to hear about OHSU. Thanks again and good luck to all of you.

I don't know if anyone else is getting the same vibe, but it seems like 80% of applicants want to go to the West Coast. Any particular reason? Good weather? Reputation?

I'm not sure if people are thinking this far ahead, but regional fellowships often lead to regional jobs. The residency replaces the fellowship, so the same logic applies at the residency level.

I haven't particularly noticed that in either my west coast or east coast interviews. That being said, most of the west coast applicants seem to want to stay on the west coast (and visa versa for east coast), which is pretty standard in my understanding

A top 10, in no particular order, generally looks like this:

Medical College Wisconsin
Yale
Baptist Vascular Institute
Michigan
Washington University
Mt Sinai
Oregon
South Carolina
University of Washington
University of Virginia

These opinions are based heavily on case volume/complexity/diversity, clinical training, and autonomy. It reflects opinions of recent fellows and young attendings I have met in recent years. I believe most Interventionalists would agree with this list +/- adding their own regional bias to the equation. It is an OPINION based list.

I've heard that Yale, Mt. Sinai and Univ. of Washington in particular have the highest case volumes. I also know that Yale and Univ. of Washington have peripheral artery disease at their associated VA. If you're looking for an IR fellowship after completing a DR residency, hands down you should attend a high-volume program like those listed above. A year is a relatively short time, and you want to go somewhere where you'll see enough breadth.

Now with that said, I personally don't believe the same logic applies for the IR/DR residency or ESIR. With the residency/ESIR you'll have nearly two years of IR training, regardless of the school you attend. If you're lacking in some area, there'll be time to find a rotation (even at an outside hospital) to correct that deficiency. The daily volume of cases becomes less important in ranking a school. Instead, more weight should be given to the strength of the DR years. The DR years often have more time for research, second degrees, entrepreneurship, outdoor activities, starting a family, hobbies, etc. In my mind, the best IR/DR program will allow me to pursue my personal and professional interests during the DR years, while providing moderate-to-high volume cases throughout my IR years.
