Do you know if they interview external candidates?

Sent from my iPhone using SDN mobile

Not sure. Just got the following email yesterday:

"Good morning,

I would like to thank you for your interest in the Interventional Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. I would like to inform you that the positions have been filled.

Thanks
Millie
Program Coordinator"

has anyone been on an interview yet? Curious to know how it went, what the day was like? Thanks.

MGH to send invitations possibly by the end of this week. Cedars Sinai (LA) has not sent invitations yet.

Anyone know anything about the Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia? Don't know much about the program. Cath volume, well-known, etc?

Also, what's the word on Georgetown? It's a 2 year program with 1st year research? Is that research only? Does anyone feel like might end up a little rusty if it is only research? Or will we be cathing that first year as well?

Thoughts on the Arkansas program? I heard they send out interviews early but then extend interventional spots in mid-Feb before other interviews are completed. I guess you kind of would have to hedge your bets, take the spot or decline it and if you do decline it hope the interviews you have left go well and you get a spot with them. Thoughts?

Thoughts?

I do not know much about the programs in Philadelphia. At Medstar/Georgetown the first year is pure research, no patients and no Cath lab. However it is a high volume and good program in the second year, and you should consider it if they like research.

Regarding Arkansas, it appears to be a very good clinical program with high volume specifically in one of their private sites (Arkansas Heart Hospital), where they do almost everything from complex coronaries to high volume peripherals and structural procedures. The fellows definitely get good training in coronaries and peripherals, but not sure if they get good hands on in structural stuff. and yes they offer relatively early and put you on the spot.

I will collect here information, opinions, additional information, interview experiences, etc. If you want to post this kind of information but don't want to see it associated to you username, you can send me a private message and I will post it for you

What people say about the Interventional cardiology fellowships...

Brown
(CardiologyFellow322)
"I have heard good things. Excellent coronary work and great peripheral exposure. 1 year program. My understanding is not much structural exposure like TAVI. 4 fellows split 6 months between 2 hospitals. Call 1 week every other week at one hospital. Call every other night and every other weekend at the other hospital."

How do programs usually communicate offers? Email? Phone call?

The programs I've interviewed at this far have all said they are interviewing all 20-30 candidates before offering. Is that what everyone else is hearing too?

Brown Interview Feb. 1. Anybody know anything about this program besides the name. I have heard good things. Excellent coronary work and great peripheral exposure. 1 year program. My understanding is not much structural exposure like TAVI. 4 fellows split 6 months between 2 hospitals. Call 1 week every other week at one hospital. Call every other night and every other weekend at the other hospital.

Still looking from any info from anybody for Einstein in Philadelphia. Interview Feb. 22. The website is not that helpful as far as what kind of numbers people are getting.

////////////////

Medstar/Georgetown
(cardio-nerd)
"I do not know much about the programs in Philadelphia. At Medstar/Georgetown the first year is pure research, no patients and no Cath lab. However it is a high volume and good program in the second year, and you should consider it if they like research."
////////////////

Methodist Hospital (Houston)
(cathem)
"I interviewed at all of them for general fellowship - Don't remember a lot about Methodist's numbers. They are probably middle of the road. I liked the general fellowship though. I ranked them fairly high."
////////////////

Mount Sinai
(AllIfearIsGod)
"i think it has more to do with malignancy of program. IC fellows are not treated nicely and fellows are made to feel worse than interns at times.. having said that it is one of the better programs out there."
////////////////

University of Arkansas
(cardio-nerd)
"Regarding Arkansas, it appears to be a very good clinical program with high volume specifically in one of their private sites (Arkansas Heart Hospital), where they do almost everything from complex coronaries to high volume peripherals and structural procedures. The fellows definitely get good training in coronaries and peripherals, but not sure if they get good hands on in structural stuff. and yes they offer relatively early and put you on the spot."
////////////////

University of Texas Houston
(cathem)
"I know that UT Houston has really good volume. Probably the busiest in the Med Center. Really good TAVR experience. One of the guys there now has over 70 TAVRs, half as the primary operator. at the half way point has about 200PCIs and 41 peripherals. Get to see tandems - I know the IC fellow goes in for those sometimes. 2 call days a week and every 3rd weekend. for IC. Expect they will have 2 internal people and probably offer 1 outside spot."
////////////////

Texas Heart Institute
(cathem)
"Texas Heart has good numbers/training but I think they pretty much fill internally or from Baylor every year. There has been a lot of movement from practitioners after they were bought by CHI."

Harvard programs (MGH, BWH, BI)
(harrypotter7)
"First of all, there is a lot of sitting around in Boston programs. They are not busy at all and if you really looking for clinical training with high volumes, complexity and hands on training, don't come to Boston. You will regret it. This place is to may be get some hands on research (although you l soon find everyone has their own agenda and not many research opportunities as first authorship). So mainly you come here for the "Harvard" name if that helps at all in your future endeavors, be it an academic/private practice jobs. If you go into details of the program, MGH- 1100-1200 PCIs/year, good program, fellows end up doing 275-300 PCIs/year, very good autonomy (best of all boston programs). Very few CTOs, not much hands on in CTOs. They take 4 fellows/year. Then they give 2 of those fellows structural positions. For structural, TAVR volume is decent (about 200/year), very few clips (may be 2/mth), no LAA closures in any structural programs in Boston, few ASD/PFO closures. Peripherals- low volume with very few carotids, no advanced peripheral training like EVAR/TEVAR or a lot of below knee, mainly bread and butter iliac and SFA. 2-3 invasive fellows! BWH- 750-800 PCIs/year, VA- 100-150 PCIs/year, fellows end up doing 275-300 PCIs/year. Autonomy is average at the most. Few CTOs, not hands on. Takes 3 fellows/year. Again, lot of sitting around and doing nothing. Lots of interventional consults. 2nd year, 2 fellows/year. Peripherals and structural both, although you barely make it up to the peripheral numbers. Very few below knee, few carotids, no advanced stuff. Extremely high TAVR volume close to 350 TAVRs/year, extremely good autonomy in structural (as their PD who runs the program is hands off). Few Clips 3/mth, lots of valve in valve, both aortic and mitrals, no LAA closures, few ASD/PFO closures. BIDMC- 1100-1200 interventions/year. 5 fellows/year. Per fellow volume is not even basic 250/year. Okiesh autonomy depending upon the mood of the attendings. Some exposure to structural but not even close to being a second operator. Some peripheral training, not enough for numbers even though. It's not worth talking about BU and Tufts for interventional training as they are extremely low volume and complexity with limited hands on training experiences.
This is a second hand information, if anyone in the forum has better insights feel free to share."

Get to see tandems - I know the IC fellow goes in for those sometimes. 2 call days a week and every 3rd weekend. for IC. Expect they will have 2 internal people and probably offer 1 outside spot."

"Texas Heart has good numbers/training but I think they pretty much fill internally or from Baylor every year. There has been a lot of movement from practitioners after they were bought by CHI."

I would like to share the perspectives about Boston programs to the forum, insights from few colleagues who are training there currently.

First of all, there is a lot of sitting around in Boston programs.

This is a second hand information, if anyone in the forum has better insights feel free to share.
